Rainbow - The Temple Of The King.
Album: Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, 1975.
Lyrics:
One day, in the year of the fox
Came a time remembered well,
When the strong young man of the rising sun
Heard the tolling of the great black bell.
One day in the year of the fox,
When the bell began to ring,
It meant the time had come for one to go
To the temple of the king.
There in the middle of the circle he stands,
Searching, seeking.
With just one touch of his trembling hand,
The answer will be found.
Daylight waits while the old man sings,
Heaven help me!
And then like the rush of a thousand wings,
It shines upon the one.
And the day has just begun.
One day in the year of the fox
Came a time remembered well,
When the strong young man of the rising sun
Heard the tolling of the great black bell.
One day in the year of the fox,
When the bell began to sing
It meant the time had come for the one to go
To the temple of the king.
There in the middle of the people he stands,
Seeing, feeling.
With just a wave of the strong right hand, he's gone
To the temple of the king.
Far from the circle, at the edge of the world,
He's hoping, wondering.
Thinking back on the stories he's heard of
What he's going to see.
There, in the middle of a circle it lies.
Heaven help me!
Then all could see by the shine in his eyes
The answer had been found.
Back with the people in the circle he stands,
Giving, feeling.
With just one touch of a strong right hand, they know
Of the temple and the king.

My first love died beside me in his sleep ten years ago. He loved this song. My brother sang it at his funeral. Still makes me weep uncontrollably. What a song, what a voice, what memories. Rest in peace RJD. ❤️

In the 70's this was a typical example of folk-fantasy-metal-rock song. Had it been made 2 or 3 decades later in the 90's or the 00's, it would have undoubtedly been crafted (distorted) into some type of death metal motif, with that ever-angry growly voice that is so prevalent. Somewhere along the line in the 'metal' genre, we went horribly wrong, giving up on producing truly melodic vocals and instrumentation.

i doubt the 90s death metal transformation since Ritchy is not a death metal guitarist ^_^... and when u think that metal nowadays is only about obese men with angry growly voices you should maybe inform yourself better or listen to more than death and black metal *g*

Kenshin Himura Perhaps you missed the point of my statement. Let me try to restate it clearly. My point is: Somewhere along the evolutionary path of rock music from the 80's to 90's to 00's - there was a definitive move away from guitarists and singers who focused on a 'melodic' delivery. Songs like this which have a "fantasy-folk" story to tell, tend to only appear in death metal songs today. You rarely (with a few exceptions like Blackmore's Night) continue to hear these types of songs played without the added distorted atonal guitar and indiscernible lyrics masked in a growl. I blame groups like Metallica for starting the (downward spiral) trend of melodic-to-thrash. They were one of the early 'seeder' groups. They would start off songs like 'Fade to Black', and 'Nothing Else Matters' with a "melodic" intro which later morphed into something a little rougher around the edges. That was okay, but then other groups came along, who copied Metallica, but twisted it a little deeper, by dropping the melodic intro, and going right for the growl, guitar notes became much more atonal, and ultimately death metal emerged prominent in the mainstream. As far as the "fantasy-folk" lyric genre, well, we wound up with Viking Metal, and the like. I am not sure about your statement of: "only about obese men with angry growly voices" - It certainly is not limited to men. Maria Arkhipova (Scream) from the pagan-metal band Arkona does a pretty good growly voice. But at least I can (somewhat) understand the lyrics as she sings them with that 'fake' growly voice. As opposed to most growly voiced singers - who you need to see the lyrics written down to in order to comprehend the words. In this song by Rainbow, I can actually make out the chords: Am / F / G / Am Am / G /Dm-F/ Am I'm really hard pressed to discern specific chords in most death or thrash metal songs...... ...that being said... I realize that being able to listen to clear and crisp guitar picking, and to be able to savior a rich clear vocal delivery, is not on everyone's priority list...... ..........so thrash away, and enjoy...

@@ralphyboy25 you really know nothing about Metal.... try listening to the subgenre of Power Metal which Rainbow heavily influenced.

@@Lars1224 Actually, I do. And yes, there are some threads, from Blackmore past, that have make their way through to the next generation of bands. No doubt about that. The closest to adopting and in part emulating, Ritchie's early work is likely Symphonic Metal

@@ralphyboy25 just your statements that fantasy laced lyrics are prominent in Death Metal and that Death Metal is mainstream tells me a lot that you do not know what you are talking about in terms of that genre. You really shouldn't comment unless you know about the DM genre. My guess is that you consider any Metal genre with no clean vocals as "Death" Metal which really destroys any point you try to make... and btw Metal has to evolve to stay relevant or it fades into obscurity. It can't stay in a strictly melodic , clean vocals and clean guitar stage. So just say you have no clue about Thrash, Death or other extreme sub genres of Metal and leave it at that. And you must be the only supposed experienced guitarist that I know who can't tell the chord changes in Thrash songs and such... and what you call "symphonic" Metal is really more identified as Power Metal : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_metal

The Rainbow Rising... It's dawn I hear A clap of thunder A gentle lightening Laying its hands on Earth by sheets Pallid soft and slow Stillness flanking, mellow echoes Birds sing and dawn beckons A rainbow meeting Of a long and narrow highway And colours beyond belief Superior skies swallowed in depthsv9f blue Eve far away appeared superimposed This dome of paint splatters Where does it lead? Is it to a potion Gold? Or only to a placebon earth Where Golden shadows glow? Swooping as a paint brush With bright golden yellow Tranquil is the rainbow With ample views of mellow Turquoise plunging the horizon Stroking tree tips of sap green A rainbow that is shadow less and rarely ever seen A pull of red Explosive like a rose Announces her arrival And where the rainbow goes, Endorsing my ensuing Heavens laughter swells I typify this glory For Nature giving Live spells...
