Thank you. This was one of the first few fish I carved. The rainbow I carved last summer is by far better

You’re welcome I hope it helps. Later this summer I’ll be taking a workshop with a world renowned wood carver with multiple world titles and the workshop will be carving a rainbow trout. I’ve learned a lot since this rainbow project so With his workshop The next one should be way better. So be sure and watch for it.

The paint I used on this one was basic .99 cent apple barrel and folk art acrylic from Hobby Lobby. Olive green Metallic olive green Metallic silver Bright red White Black Metallic black Cad yellow Were the main colors. I also used green Iridescence, blue iridescence , and gold iridescence washes to give it the iridescence most fish have. They are hard to see in the video. To start I painted gesso over the whole piece let it dry overnight and then it got a coat of the metallic silver. And I started at the top with a base of cad yellow followed by thin washes of metallic black followed metallic olive green and and faded out before the side where the red stripe is. The red stripe base was airbrushed and built up using thin washes of the bright red until it formed the pink. I dry brushed thin washes of white on the belly trying not to completely cover the silver. The fins got a pale green that I made using olive green with the cad yellow until I got the fin color I wanted. After it dried I dry brushed very, very thin washes of the green and gold iridescence over the top down the side. The belly got a very thin wash of blue iridescence. I hand painted the black spots as well as a lot of the finish work by hand. Most of the actual techniques are shown in the video.

can you tell me the colors you used on the top portion of the trout? black, blue, and white I think.
@Danny_Harris-Arts Жыл бұрын
This was the first rainbow I did. I used Hobby Lobby acrylic paint in their Apple Barrel, Deco Art and Folk Art brand colors. I stated with a cad yellow, then a metallic green, and darkened it with a metallic black. I didn’t like the look so I covered it lightly with the metallic green and finally finished with a light transparent coat of regular olive green. I’ve got a new video series of a rainbow I just finished a month or so ago. I think I did a better job in the second attempt and I talk about the color process in that one. Check it out if you haven’t already.

Danny.. What paint are you using for the spots. I've tried paint pens and many acrylics.. but the spots look dull. I'm currently trying black gloss.. but even they don't look right. Should I be using an enamel?
@Danny_Harris-Arts10 ай бұрын
A lot of people use enamel and it sprays better in an airbrush but to me cleanup is a pain and mistakes are harder to correct. I use acrylic and for black I use mostly flat black. I use just cheap hobby store liquid acrylic and I haven’t had that problem of it being dull. a few of the colors I use have a shiny finish when dry but I don’t use a final gloss finish anymore. I finish all my fish carvings in a satin or matte poly urethane so any paint that was glossy looses the gloss. So far all of my fish carvings are depicting the fish under water and noting underwater is glossy. If I was to carve one jumping out of the water I’d want a high gloss wet look. This is one of my older pieces and the first rainbow trout I caved. I have a more recent version of a rainbow that I finished last summer that’s far better than this one. And there’s two painting segments in it if you’re interested. kzbin.info/aero/PLqwchUaQYvGtt_QEYXuvvhAz5ATAMXZR3&si=w_e2D_7nXQEfQkgD

@@Danny_Harris-Arts Thanks.. do you coat the fish with any kind of gloss to bring out the brightness of the spots?

Sorry, I see you used Poly U for a final finish.

Where do you sign your work at on the fish?
@Danny_Harris-Arts2 жыл бұрын
I use a fine tip sharpie and sign it as small as I can on the non show side. Low near the anal fins. I also sign the base
