Clemence admitted that he always feared Bonhof's free kicks, and it's nothing to be ashamed of, IMO.

I've seen some powerful free kicks in my life but I've never seen one hit like that,it was like an exocete missile. Like a previous post said it just seems to pick up speed as it goes past the wall. With modern technology they should tell us what speed that shot reached.

Looks like Clem had intended to collect the ball but it swerved up at the last minute; his body no longer behind it, the ball simply went into the net above his shoulders. It was bad luck and, without detracting from Bonhof’s expertise in free-kicks, a freak goal.

Bassett Time ... it was the early Eighties before England’s soccer fortunes turned from tragicomedy to pure farce, starting with Clemence getting tear-gassed between the sticks in Italy in 1980, when the gas blew down from the hooligan terraces. A hundred years of luck got pawned in getting out of the group for the 1982 World Cup. Clemence let in at least one howler in every away game.

Agreed. Consideration should be given to facing up to a Peter Lorimer free kick also. Both hit the ball very hard

@skinking22527 жыл бұрын
AngrierGorilla You won't die maybe, but studies have shown that it can give you a bad concussion and knock you out, which is never ever a good thing. It's like being punched by a big guy in the ring: if you are a trained fighter, a single blow won't kill you but it can leave you with some sort of brain damage. Better not to take the risk, and the same Clemence must have thought the same.
@tnyamaneko60936 жыл бұрын
There's no shame moving your face away from that net-seeking missile. The good reflex would have been to put your fists forward asap but as the replay shows, he was totally screened by his wall. The fact that Bonhof was a renowned power shot taker and the fact that you see the ball coming right in your face at the very last moment is a worst-case scenario for the keeper. Every keeper would rather prefer a sinking ball than a raising one in that situation, as raising balls are always more difficult to block properly. When they're launched with that kind of ungodly speed, you're screwed and if you manage to save one like that, it's something that's kept in the lore of your football club.
