My rule #2 is…don’t buy a car with a timing belt. I drive 25-30k a year. I’m not spending that much money every 3-4 years on an intensive maintenance item. Current vehicle is 295k with a timing chain. There’s never been a bolt turned on this engine. Still runs like new. If I drove 10k a year, I’d probably overlook the timing belt as being a deterrent, but I’d also consider trading the car before replacing it. You are correct. Given the position of the striped belt it is unlikely the cams ever came out of time with each other. If on the other hand the striped area covered the entire engagement of the cam gear then one of the cams could rotate without the other. The cam gears are pretty large compared to the crank gear engagement length. It is likely if you were to continue to rotate the forward cam until the striped portion met the rear cam gear the rear cam would remain engaged the whole time. Ray could have determined this by making a complete rotation of the belt and watching for the 2 cams continuing to turn together.

HEY RAY, READ THIS: "The PT Cruiser 150hp engine is always a non interference engine. If you have seized camshafts is more likely due to poor lubrication/low oil pressure. The seizing of the camshaft is what is breaking the belt in this case. Failure to change oil as recommended by Chrysler is usually the root cause. Normally the belt should last at least at least 80,000 miles and can last much longer. Your driving habits can greatly reduce the belts life. Lots of hard accelerations will surely do it. The belt breaking doesn't cause other problems but other problem like water pump seizing, cam shaft bearing seizing, timing belt tensioner seizing will break the belt. If you do change the belt either before it breaks or after it breaks you should also change the water pump and belt tensioner at the same time every time." -Jake Jude Apparently, that "...but it is possible for the intake and exhaust valves to touch" thing is more theoretical than actual. It CAN happen - but rarely does. But, yeah, the engine is (somewhat) known for stuff seizing and taking out the belt, instead of the belt failing and taking out stuff. Kind of backwards. Maybe because that's not exactly the poster child vehicle for "owner performs all needed maintenance *and changes oil regularly* ", lol?

Ray, technically it is an interference engine. but... 95% of the time a new belt is all that is needed. Remove all the mounts off the front of the engine, pull drive belts, jack the front of the engine up as high as you can and service the belt (and related parts) 4-5 hours total. Given where the belt failed (at the crank) I'd say the cams stayed in time with each other and there is a chance. it's worth the 2-3 hours to toss a belt and give it a try. if it runs, finish putting it back together. also that car was overdue for a new belt, so blaming the engine might not be the correct answer. poor maintenance is. a good borescope will show you the valves without pulling the head. a bad borescore will show you witness marks on the pistons. use car-part pro for used engines. our yard just sold one with 120K on it for 500 bucks.

I've performed this repair before on earlier year PT Cruisers. Those are not interference engines. This issue is easy to ID without a compression tester or expensive scan tool too. First test is look at the odometer, if its anywhere near 100k on a Chrysler 2.4L, that's clue #1. Clue #2 is it ain't starting, but ran fine before. And clue #3 is it has cam position sensor codes. If you got those 3 issues, you need a new timing belt. You have to remove the motor mounts and pull the engine up about 6-8" to access everything. And the AC lines will fight you to the death. You also have to replace the water pump while you're in there and any gummy pulleys. Is it a PITA? Yes! And the cams will happily pop one tooth out of alignment while you're getting the belt situated. But it's not an end of the world job nor does it require any special tools. It's just time consuming to get to. But certainly better than getting rid of the car.

After tearing the head off it, It was found that a small carbon patch was causing the leakdown. I would definitely start by replacing the belt and accessories before condemning the engine. Especially if it sheered the belt at startup, valve to valve damage is not likely.

Hey Ray, a suggestion that may or may not be helpful: If you were able to build a relationship with a local used car dealer that is honest (they do exist!) then it might help to soften the blow to a customer when you have to deliver the worst news on their vehicle. Its something I do as a salesman working with local technicians when a customer wants to spend money on equipment that's too worn out and vice versa when the the customer wants to jump the gun and replace something that needs a minor repair. It's a great way to build customer confidence and loyalty even if it costs you a sale sometimes.

The 2.3L inline 4 engines used in the Pinto also were non-interference engines. And, they used a rubber belt as well. The problem with the 2.3L belt, up to 1993, was that the belt teeth could get sheared by the torque needed to started the engine, especially cold. Since you do a lot of work on PT Cruisers it may be worth the effort to replace the timing belt. You can reuse it on another PT Cruiser if that fails to fix the problem. If it works it may be worth the money to fix it that way just on the chance that is all that it needs. Either way if it fails you may take the car as payment for the belt and labor cost and part the car out if the owner decides to junk it

@@waterloo123100 IN these days when buying a new car for 40 to 60K and having a car payment vs replacing a timing belt or engine swap may be the way to go. That engine came with a three year unlimited mileage warranty. But eventually we gave the car to another family member who then drove it into the ground. I noticed that the mileage was at the point to replace the timing belt in this car. I believe that the belt tensioner lost its tension hence removing the teeth in that section of the belt and turning it into junk.
