Oh I was saying it YO-sta-berry because of the Johannesbeere origin. Thanks for the correction!

We plated our jostaberry last spring. It held through the winter just fine here in zone 4a-4b. Last Thursday our bush was fully leafed out and beautiful. When I checked on Sunday afternoon, I found 50% or better of the foliage had been eaten! The dried drooping blossoms are still there, maybe we'll see some fruit. On further inspection,I found a couple very tiny all green caterpillars. Have you had this issue? If so how did you correct it?

How would you suggest pruning jostberries in the late winter?

Neem oil is good. This is how it works It reduces insect feeding and acts as a repellent. It also interferes with insect hormone systems, making it harder for insects to grow and lay eggs. Azadirachtin can also repel and reduce the feeding of nematodes. Other components of neem oil kill insects by hindering their ability to feed.

I have had a Josta berry for 4 years and it has grown large but never produced fruit. I prune it and fertilize it 1-2 per year. Leaves always appear healthy. What could be wrong? I was told it is self-fertilizing, and have one in a wind protected location next to my fence.Really disappointed in this species .

Does it flower? Are you pruning back the branches? You may be pruning off the fruiting buds!
