Today I'm installing an IBC tote Rainwater Harvesting system (with First Flush) for Wyndy, our wild mustang! In the video I'll show you how I set up the PVC Gutter Run Piping, link the IBC totes, assemble a ball valve, create a DIY first flush system and talk about options for a stand for platform for the IBC totes to be raised up for easier usage. And then as always, I'll ramble on about this that and the other ;)
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!
Joe
And for those wondering about where I get my IBC totes in the Southern Arizona area.... Justin at Arizona Sustainable Living 520-329-2929

Another fine job complete. You always take pride in your work and it shows thru in the videos even when just making a water collection system. I was a bit surprised that you didnt Tee off with an automatic fill/float valve for the water that is in the Horse Pen, so you don't have to transport the water using the bucket.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! As for not doing the float valve. At the moment the water trough is on the other side of the barn in a shade area and I didn’t want to run a hose or pipe there. Also, with all the training we’ve been doing that water gets pretty muddy with the round pen dust. So we’ve been cleaning it out a lot to keep it nice for the horse. But once I get some less dusty media to put in the horse area I will probably at a float valve to that trough and relocate.

As for Cochise county…. That’s great! As a matter of fact we were recently looking at land out there. The mine by us was trying to buy us out, although we have no intention to move. But we figured if they offered us something sky high then Cochise was gonna be on our short list. I love the freedom element the most. And the opt out build option😊👍

@NickLea Good morning. According to the experts, you say it with a long "o"; the same way you pronounce "go" or "show" (poe-table). We've learned to pronounce it with a short "o" like "mop" or "pot". But like our host said, when we pronounce it with a short "o" the definition is literally "water you can put in a pot". And THAT means it's usable - you can cook with it, wash & clean with it, drink it. The "experts" never have the same logic I have. 😂😂😂

Big compliments for your work on this. I myself have three coupled together, both the washer and dishwasher run on harvested rainwater (washer only half the amount of detergent and no fabric softener needed, the dishwasher only half a tab as the water is so soft). One remark though: I've put my totes in 'the dark' as the algae grows fast in daylight. Perhaps you could place them on the other side of the barn wall?

I like your work. Most of my work here involves metal fab using both new and salvaged metal tubing and angle. One thing though: Would it be better to house those totes? This would help prolong the plastic totes usable life and prevent algae from the suns rays. Also the height of the metal rack lets you quickly check underneath for snakes. Good job.

Thank you for the video and the ideas i now have 😊 I've just scored 12 IBC's, for free from work. I was playing with the idea of flexible hose (because that fits with my transportable pump setup) for my last roof space to harvest water from, but you've jogged my thought process! The semi-perm fittings for the ibc's is exactly what i need to do rather than the mis-match i currently have. This is just for veggie garden water and potentially some aquaponics. My only comment, or question I guess, is with the monsoon coming you'll be expecting a fairly high rainfall rate, so will your gutter transfer ALL the water into the downpipe? In australia we have a large raincatcher to guide the gutter water into the downpipe so there is no loss in heavy rain.

Just a thought. If you get leaves and debris caught and matted on the upper screen mesh, you might find that as water pours out of the roof gutter that it will deflect off the debris and splash over the sides of the pipe thus losing it.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 ай бұрын
Yes those can be a problem. But I just make sure to brush them clean in between rains. Just a quick few seconds and it’s good. But if you had lots of leaves it’d definitely be something you’d have to keep on top of.

I had not much issues with alga the first season with a new clean tote but every other season after that it usually gets quite bad at the end of the summer. Pressure washing it in the spring helps but it's really difficult to fit the washer handle inside the tote so the upper section usually doesn't get cleaned as well as the lower part. It's okay tho because I'm only using it to water plants. Also those +200 gallons are surprisingly quickly used when it stops raining for a month. I should get another.
@homesteadonomics

Yes, for sure! I’ve also had the same experience. I keep meaning to try one of the covers that folks sell for them….but usually opt for paint or to just clean it out occasionally. And yes, it’s surprising how much water we use. So when you see the level dwindling while using a tank you definitely notice it more. Kinda like using cash versus a card. Makes you more conscious of when you spend.

They are a cheaper option for something smaller like this. Since they are industrial use they get discarded for relatively cheap compared to a newer tank. In general the bigger tank size the better the value. So if you’re only going to need a 1000 or so capacity, then IBC’s can fill the need well. However there quickly becomes more expense and complexity if you were to tie many more than perhaps 2-3. Plus I kinda like the industrial aspect of them…. Stackable, moveable,… and kinda cool looking too!

12:53 with a real hard rain, is it possible the flow could miss your drain? Really nice setup!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 ай бұрын
Some could for sure, but most will not. And if it did become a problem a simple backside ‘dam’ could be made with some extra pipe in a 1/3 circle to kind restrict the flow wanting to skip.

Really good...thanks for the video. Will you be taking video of the monsoons when they come? It would be really interesting to see how the rain falls and runs across your property and how much rain falls and how all your systems fill up. Have you noticed a change in the monsoon seasons with all the talk of global warming/weather changes? Take care.

If I can I will…. But if seems the last few years each really good rain we had happened in the evening or in days I was at work. But if I can get the footage I would like to. As for the climate stuff….well….I don’t know if I can type all my thoughts on that in a text format….haha🤪 I do think we have an impact on the climate but not at the level that the people who fly around the world on private jets claim. The sun is the single greatest input on the earths climate. But it is rarely talked about by these climate folks. Unfortunately, There is so much political/globalism agenda behind a lot of this. Is it changing. Yes. But by what and how much and in what direction…. And what are the mitigating steps that would make a difference? There’s a whole lot that deserves debate and discussion there. Now for us specifically. The last few years have been incredible monsoon seasons. Like way above average. But not for other parts of the state…. So it depends greatly on location and the current weather patterns. So it depends…. Haha…. Isn’t that the typical response. Anyways, hope all that made sense and thanks for watching!😊🙏

Hi, I agree the sun and its cyclical patterns are what drives our weather/climate. There is so much more to it as well, earths magnetosphere, the other planets, etc… Love your videos, learn so much from you. Thank you!

Good video. What is your average rain fall per year? I built a gravity fed system for my animals to drink from and for myself to use around my yard through taps. To cover the IBC tank i used black silage cover. Its a heavy plastic.

Thank you! We get quite a range of rainfall. Tucson our closest city gets 12-13” on average. We can get a few more than that because we are slightly higher and close to some mountainous areas (rain shadowing). But the last few monsoons were so incredible that a couple years we were into the 20”s…. With 10-15” coming in the monsoons. But it’s hard to say with specifics as it does range quite a lot.

@homesteadonomics I'm from Northern Ireland. We would normally get around 30" per year. Our rain isn't as heavy but it could snow in July! lololol

Those will fill up quickly, especially given you get monsoons, what happens when they fill up, where does the overflow go?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 ай бұрын
Well, at the moment they will just overflow onto the ground. But I have been needing to make a water hazard for my daughter to train her horse with some perhaps I’ll get some old pipe and make an overflow run to that just as a temporary thing. Then after that I’ll likely just direct any overflow into a tree well.

Nothing new…. We started our seeds in there the winter. And had some bucket veggies growing but nothing new. And all that I’ve shown before. I do plan to do some modifications to it for this upcoming fall/winter….. but I said that last winter as well😂. And that would be the main reason for a new update…. With something new to show

Where do you get the ball & what size do you use for that 3" to 4" reducer?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 11 ай бұрын
I got the one on the clip from a rainwater kit from tank depot.com. But you can also use a kids plastic ball so long as it is large enough to get stopped at the necked down area and hollow so as to float up with the water level.
