I've Literally fell asleep every night to this for so long but never even commented, so hey fellow humans who have great taste in sounds😅😅

*You opened your eyes as you rose from your sleep. Your eyes immediately darted to the window when you heard the sound of rain beating against the roof of your house. And there it fell, heavily, creating muddy pounds and slowly creeping down the window. You grabbed a cup of coffee and wrapped yourself in a warm blanket, shielding your body from the chilly air, and stared outside at the lovely scenery before you while the smell of coffee dispersed into the air.*

Squinting, you rubbed your eyes, picked up your eye phone and realised you were late for work. You spilt your coffee all over your phone, then shouted into the nothingness. Nobody could hear as the sound of the rain buffed your cries. Your momentary peace had, once again, evaded you.

I can close my eyes and remember dark noisy smoke filled venues playing music like this. Where I would wind up on rainy nights (or after walking on foggy gray days). The repetition of that sax and tinkling of those piano keys, both noodling without recognizable melody, provided an odd sense of comfortable familiarity - key to background music. Where everyone looked mysterious since no one could see the other that well, and sounded interesting since no one could hear the other that well. Someone told a joke, someone else laughed but too loud. Smiling, looking away, covered your real apathy. Glasses clinking. Blasts of cold air intermittently when the door opens. No additional light. There are times when the sound of the rain was a welcome cloak to it all, if I sat close enough to a window - if there was one. And all of that was a game. Just no replays. And that was why a fireplace was indispensable. The only warmth in the room. Brilliant flames intertwined in their passionate fiery dance, worthy of watching until they were just orange embers, I finished my last brandy, and dawn signaled it was time to go home.

It was late when I finally shuffled in. The room almost seemed smaller without anyone to share it with. It’d been nine months since she had left. He shivered, the water shaking off his coat and hat. He set them down by the boiler and closed his eyes. “Here I am again, wondering where that spark is,” I thought out loud. All the homicides, cold cases, and bodies would be enough to make a man die inside. And especially now, without her, it seemed almost hopeless, my thoughts wandered off, Heaving a sigh, I plopped down into my chair, a deep rich leather chair, brown but with a funny trim, “Hm, she picked that out,” I remembered. “Gotta stop running back in circles,” I told myself. I grabbed the stack of files on the nightstand, first one, new partner. God, he’d lost a few, too. Good men, just got their number called. I’d been waiting on mine for a few, maybe that’s why she left, “No, not doing this,” I looked down at the folder, the first thing I read *Eggs, Patricia T.* “That IS ironic.”, he allowed himself a little chuckle. Seeing that his own name was oddly related, was almost too much of a coincidence to bear. But as a detective, he’d seen it all, almost, and never allowed any coincidences. “Oh boy, straight from the academy.” He’d had a few partners brand new in the unit, God, he hated seeing them get hit, it tore him up, and he knew it’d only be a matter of time before eggs, well, “cracked,” he said out loud. He only hoped he’d have a bowl. The phone rang, drawing him out of his stupor. It was the chief. “Hey, Mr. Coffee.” He tried to sound as motivated as he could. “Hey detective, just wanted to let you know we sent in those reports, that’s mighty fine work you did, I think Pepper’s is gonna be outta this town for good.” “Finally, sir, I knew Jimmy Salts wasn’t give up easy, but you can count on me for any job.” “That’s why you’re the best, detective, oh and by the way, I think that new partners gonna work out real well.” “Yeah, definitely, sir, I think with a little seasoning, she’ll be hard boiled like the rest of us.” “Good work, detective, get some sleep, oh and Bacon?” “Yes sir?” I answered “Don’t forget breakfast.” “Will do, sir.” I hung up the phone, and stared out the window, *Francis T. Bacon* Everyone else just called him Frank, except for his mother. Or at least she did. And I woke up with the smell of breakfast.

“I was sitting at my desk, sipping my cup of coffee. Black and full bodied, as I like it. Without it, I would not be able to come to the end of my days ... This cursed pandemic continues to take its toll. Just yesterday, 1,100 new cases. The job of a private covid investigator is dirty and thankless, but someone has to do it. Outside, the snow turned to rain to add to the grayness of the day. I continue to sip my coffee wondering when this will all end ... Black and full bodied, as I like it ... "
