The Vice-Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, is threatening to expand the invasion of Ukraine in light of the Ukrainian advance into the Russian border region of Kursk. The Russian military operation should no longer be limited to securing the areas in Ukraine that Russia considers to be its territory, says the ex-president. Rather, the armed forces should push towards the cities of Odessa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Kiev and beyond. The advance will only be stopped when Russia considers it advantageous. According to Russian reports, Ukrainian troops have advanced far into Russian territory in the region in a counterattack. There are said to have been heavy fighting. A state of emergency has been declared in the region. Ukraine has not yet commented on this. Medvedev was previously considered a pro-Western modernizer, but has become a hardliner since the beginning of the Ukraine war.
