Marla is such a great Mary Robert! I feel that her body language perfectly conveys the character's sweet shyness without being over-the-top jittery. Especially here, when she sings the first "Gloria in exelcis deo" and Deloris makes a remark about her voice being too quiet. That little apologetic smile/quirk of her lip she gives her before retreating really sold me on her character. And the way she looks so in awe at her own untapped potential, like she herself couldn't believe it, after so many years of learning to be modest and quiet. Especially when she presses her palm to her cheek, something I've seen the movie Mary Robert do as well. And the way she seems to purse or bite her lip occasionally-- Aaarrggh, I have so many feelings for this little postulant nun!

I totally agree with all of this! It's so well done.

I watch this over and over again. This. This is amazing. You literally feel joy WITH them as find out that they can sing and that when they sing its beautiful. When Marla hits that note you are just as shocked as the other Sisters are. It's just amazing. Wonderful. Truly brilliant acting. I am just sad that it went off Broadway so quickly, and kicking my self more when I didn't see it when it came to Cincinnati!

I still love this so many years after. And an absent-minded Sister Mary Martin of Tours quoting the Passion Gospel for Good Friday is funny!

The crazy high belting is thrilling but there is a baseline kicking so much ass on this song. She’s like “no I’m not gonna blend. I’m gonna hold this whole chord up with the sheer power of my midrange belt”

It's a mix, but still incredibly impressed (belting that high is not possible)

Everyone's so impressed by Mary Robert's note, but I'm more impressed with Mary Patrick's note at 3:55 . I'm playing her in an amature production of Sister Act at the moment and it's pretty difficult!!! :P

If I ever make it as a film producer, one of my dream projects would be an animated feature adaptation of this show. My ideal voice cast would include Uzo Aduba as Deloris, Christine Baranski as Mother Superior, Melissa McCarthy as Mary Patrick and, if she were still alive at that point, Rita Moreno as Mary Lazerus.
