You are an inspiration to all of us frugal people. I made my pea trellis from that wretched Virginia creeper. I ripped the vines off the fence & wound/wove them into circles/ovals. Then left them to bake on the concrete driveway. When it came time to "crochet" it all together, I used green vines. This is it's 2nd Michigan winter.

Pineappleish...love it! This gives me inspiration for the raised beds I'll be putting in soon. I inherited about 70 sheets of old corn crib siding...I know it's not wood, which I would prefer, but it was free, recycled and will be reused. My beds will be 4x9 and 27" tall...I really like the idea of using staves...maybe this technique will work with the siding. 🤔 All trial and error on my part! Lol

As of late, I have switched to making raised & semi raised beds out of whatever scrap fencing-like material I can find & pounding wood staves or pre-cut rebar I've had for years to hold them upright. Old cyclone (cut down) fence, cattle panel, concrete mesh works fine. If it looks really hideous, I grow & train beans/peas around the outside. After hearing you huff & puff after moving all that locust, I remember why I switched from wood. Locust really is wonderful, even the off-cut scabs. Because I use "

May I ask why you didn’t build swales with these beds, and how do you manage watering? Thanks!!!

@edibleacres Жыл бұрын
I hear ya... I think the smoother, 'cleaner' side is 1) easier to get to lay flat and up against the vertical staves, 2) sticks out less so more total walking space and access between beds and 3) keeps the bark and space between bark and wood facing the soil where more soil life can enjoy it. The worms can enjoy the nicer view :)
