Each caterpillar needs one plant. No kidding! 😂 I actually cut off the ends of the stalks, strip off all but 3-4 leaves, root them in water then plant 3 per pot. Then give the rest of the plant to your caterpillars. So I always have more plants growing while they are devouring the plant. Once they eat all the leaves, sit it outside to regrow. Lots of Lowe’s plants have eggs but many people don’t know what to look for. Very cool that you found a plant with actual cats on it! 🐛🐛🐛

I used to work at Lowe's in the nursery, and we had parsley at the store that was infested with eastern swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. I knew that per dept of agriculture reasons, the plants really should have been destroyed so I bought every single plant I saw a caterpillar on. My daughter was in first grade, and doing online school and I had an old exo terra reptile enclosure I put the caterpillars in. I added branches so they'd have something to hang their chrysalis off of. It was a fantastic lesson for my then 6 year old to learn, and most of the caterpillars did make it to the butterfly stage. She learned so much, but the thing that stuck in her mind the most is that caterpillar excrement is called frass, and they make SO MUCH OF IT. Caterpillars are tubes that turn leaves into frass. We lined the bottom of the cage with paper towels and had to change them 2x a day. We wound up buying parsley at the store (organic, rinsed well and patted dry for the babies) to keep up with their little appetites. The look on her face the first time she had a butterfly climb onto her finger so she could release it was worth dealing with the little munching machines.

I'm raising monarch butterflies and they're really easy to take care of but a really good tip is you just put them on the milkweed until they turn into the cocoon and then you transfer them into a box and you wait for them to turn into a butterfly wait 2 hours and then boom they turn into a butterfly it's really cool to watch them hatch from the cocoon

Each caterpillar can tops eat about 175-200 leaves before they move on to form a chrysalis. So you'd even need another bigger plant for just 1. So you'd probably have to get a LOT more plants. 10 monarch caterpillars is a ton (I know mainly because my mother has raised close to 100 different types of butterflies in their backyard). 😂

Careful. I also got milkweed with caterpillars from Lowe’s. Unfortunately they all had the OE parasite and died. If they didn’t die as caterpillars they would die in the chrysalis. The chrysalis would turn black. Always cut that milkweed down to the dirt when done - Stems. The leaves will be all gone. This way you will get new growth with no parasites or bacterial infections hopefully. I had a huge outbreak of OE parasite and NPV. I am in Florida though where the infestation is very heavy because the milkweed doesn’t die back in Florida which causes these infections to keep on spreading. It lives on the leaves that the caterpillars eat. My last batch out of 35 - 3 actually were born but born missing wings or had crumpled wings and can’t fly. So then you have to euthanize it or take care of it until it dies. I had one live for 2 weeks in a butterfly cage with only one wing. Had to pick fresh flowers several times a day so she could eat. For her to drink I used a very wet sponge (but not dripping) and added some honey She had a good 16 days. Her brother died at 7 days. I just got done trimming over 35 plants. The eggs I found I kept and sterilized them and sterilized a batch of leaves (for when they arrive) Waiting for them (the eggs) to be burn into a healthy caterpillar. Best of luck everyone. It’s not as easy as you may think and it gets very expensive. One plant per caterpillar should be enough. At $8 a plant for 10 caterpillars is $80 and that’s just the beginning. So take cuttings and make your own plants immediately from the store bought ones. Just cut a stem and stick it in dirt. It roots on its own. You don’t have to have it in water first. Mr Lunds Science has an entire series in raising monarchs as well as combating the OE parasite and NPV.

Very good. The butterfly also get OE on its feet and spreads it. You need to put this on KZbin I did not think roots could grow like that. I plant the seeds.
