How to build and set up a homemade Canadian Nightcrawler worm farm. Dew worms, or nightcrawlers are one of the most popular fishing baits out there. They can get expensive if you fish a lot. For the cost of bait for just a couple of fishing trips, you can set up your own bait farm to raise Canadian nightcrawlers at home and have an endless supply of fishing worms.

For the last couple year's what I been using for bait is frozen raw shrimp. At Walmart you can buy a bag of raw shrimp for like $5-6 dollars and pick out the size of shrimp you want. I normally go fishing once per week so a bag normally last me around 2 months. Where I live and go fishing at catfish goes crazy over shrimp and can get saugeye as well. It's more simple for me to keep couple bags of shrimp in the freezer. The day before I go fishing I can pull out some bait to thaw out.

In Ireland when I was a kid I was able to dig a bean tin of nightcrawlers in less than a hour the money (£1 a tin ) I used to buy my first bait fishing rod and reel. 30 years later I only fly fish but because of covid-19 my brother has no work and asked me to teach him to fish . I bought a new bait fishing rod and reel and the same for my brother. The night before we went fishing it felt like I had dug up half of the north of Ireland and got (0) blackhead worms......so I went online (Ebay ) wow they so expensive. I am following your advice and making a D.I.Y wormery. Thanks for sharing your video will be a great help. Oh and tight lines too.

Hey a good tip make red wigglers that's gonna b a big business in Northern Ontario, especially now with cannabis being legal and the reason I say that is cuz where I live there's no1 selling red wigglers, I say this cuz I went in the gardening supply stores and I ask if they have any R.W.'s? And they say no, but so many ppl keep asking for them. So that's when I knew there's a chance to make money. Since u already know how to make worms, we should sell some, if not how long does it take to start making my own worms, like how many of those plastic container/ tub that was used in this video. You did not mention overcrowding. If your worm raising is successful, you will need to expand the containers. My teenage buddy used the manure gutter in the unused barn behind his house and had a sign on the NYS route past his house. When I had three sons I used an old bathtub and filled it with raked leaves in the fall. Of course we had to restock each spring but that took only 3 or 4 nights with the kids doing the most work.

Hi Baby JoeGaming. You will have a very hard time keeping the worms comfortable. I know some folks in warmer climates like your will bury large bins a few feet deep in the ground to help keep them cool. I suspect you would have to bury them quite deep though. Your best bet is to keep the worm bins around or below 10 degrees Celsius. Hope that helps ya bud.

Wont they escape thru the holes in the bottom? I had lots of holes in the lid. I used the same container as you do in this video. What temperature should the room be? My basement gets warm when the furnace runs but my unheated garage gets really cold in Jan/Feb. I put in vegetable scraps but I didnt see any sign that they were eating them. And i tried coffee grinds but again I saw no sign of them eating them. I didnt see any sign of breeding certainly no little ones. I would dig down a little to check how they were doing and they were quite active in the beginning. But they got more and more docile as time went on and were dead by late Jan. (I started in Sept) I did not use newspaper. I will try your layering and see if I get it to work this year. I need worms all year round.

Well, if they are escaping from the bin, conditions in the bin aren't right. Give the layering method a try and see if that works better for you.

Nice video...Curious...as a kid I would water the lawn all day and evening and then go out and snatch up the crawlers at night....I thought you said that you cant pick them at night anymore ? Im in US...is that a Canadian thing ??? and what would be the reason for it ??
@Wilderstead
@Wilderstead 5 жыл бұрын
Roy Brower well, when I was a kid, I was able to go out and pick them at night. Hundreds of them. At the time I lived in southern Ontario. Now, living in northern Ontario on the Canadian Shield, we have very shallow topsoil. It varies from 6 inches to 12 inches, at which point there is nothing but bedrock. So raising worms like this allows me to continue to have them for bait in an area that the dew worms aren’t able to thrive in. Thanks for watching Roy!

I remember an older Fisherman who in conversation me complaining about how expensive Nightcrawlers are to buy , And he let me in on a little secret of one of the best worm beds in the tristate area Ny, Nj ,Pa it was on the banks of the Delaware river and he showed me how to go out at night and Catch them & Raise them, Well one year later im selling them for A $125 a dozen this is back in the early 80s, I built a 2'×4' × 8' plywood worm farm which I grew tens of thousands of Nightcrawlers over the period of five years And a little secret on to grow the Largest worms you would ever see in your lifetime I grew them until I moved to fla which was way to Hot to gro them so I quit now im back up North now im going to start raising them for my personal fishing use because at $5 + plus Way to expensive

A great video about the night crawlers, I'm a fervent subscriber of your site, I would have some questions, I have been growing Red Wigglers for a while with some success, I have been recently digging in my garden and came across some worms that really look alike from your pictures, when you try to pick them up, they are energetic, lively and seems to want to run away. They could stretch quite long and skinny body like a spaghetti size, up to about 5 inches, shining purple-blue color, I have started a bin with them, in my interior worm room, but to my surprise, on the next two mornings they were more then 30 worms on the floor, do they have a tendency to run away? Are these the same worm that you are mentioning, is there such a difference to handle between RW and my local night crawlers? Two months ago I had a major infestation of fungus gnats, is it possible that because I water and spray all my bins with Mosquito Dunks BTI that could have a negative effects on the worms. I live in Markham ON, thanks for your input. Philippe

@Silvers24
@Silvers24 4 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Underwood Not a bad idea, or maybe printing paper. Before the ink ha. I was curious, because newspaper is thinner then what I or you mentioned, but with that in mind, perhaps then I could just use less. Afterall, its for moister control isn't it?
@Silvers24
@Silvers24 4 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Underwood That is exactly why I am curios to know as why paper is needed at all. And especially if you are not going to drill drain holes, then IMO it would almost seem as though that would be fine? More damp on the bottom, but enough dirt, the worms would stay safe. But otherwise, indeed! Thanks for the convo :D

Hey there, Great video!! I just have a couple questions. How long should you leave them in this container, as in when should they be transferred to new paper/litter/soil? Do you have to separate the adults from the little ones? and when you decide to go fishing should you take the little ones or adults as bait? Thanks very much!
@Wilderstead
@Wilderstead 5 жыл бұрын
It'll take a few weeks for them to start to reproduce and the offspring to grow. The bins don't require a heck of a lot of maintenance. Every couple of months you might want to gently dig through the soil and remove as many of the worms as possible. Then, redo the process from the beginning, using the same soil so you don't lose any of the smaller worms or eggs/cocoons. You can use either the adults or the smaller juveniles for bait, depending on what you are fishing for.

So I really don't think the fish care if the worms taste like maple syrup considering that most fish have never eaten it. With that said, I have no doubt that the worms like the natural sugar which may be why your having such good luck with Canadian Nightcrawles in your bins since these worms like burrowing deep. Not at all a bad idea.
