Doug, this has been my favorite channel for years, I appreciate you sharing this journey with us. I actually have no interest in building a boat from scratch, I just like boats and it's just super interesting and it's been fun to watch. I just wanted to take a second to congrate you on finally getting there. I know you've had celebrations, but really this was the first time I saw you sail. You did it man! You also inspire me to get out there and to create, and that's been an added bonus. I've also enjoyed all the philosophical or therapeutical teachings...keep it up man. Keep inspiring youth and keep on your journey, I just hope you continue to share.

My family had a three masted gaff rig for many years. We had the same problem (on a smaller scale, our mast were wooden and 4” in diameter) with the rope and balls to connect the sail to the mast. We corrected the problem with rigid rings. We used 6” rings cut from a pvc pipe. You would likely need something more robust but I believe rigid rings would work for your application as well. Our boat was home built 40’ long by 6 ‘ beam, flat bottom with leeboards. Not fancy but the “ Folly” was great fun and got loads of attention.

After owning a marina in Alabama for a long time, I've seen many people wax their anchors to help keep the gulf mud from sticking to it. Doesn't have to be wiped off as you're not polishing it. Several keep some paste wax handy and rub the main sections where it's sticking occasionally. They swear by it, so maybe it will work for you:)

Sometimes I forget that my dreams don,t have to die and that hard work and perseverance pays off. Then I see you sailing a boat that has been over a decade in the making and I remember. One thing that also stands out and is probably the key to your success is a model of what Regan said paraphrased: You can accomplish anything if you dont care who gets the recognition. You always give so much thanks and praise to your crew and those who help you. You encourage them with the quality of work you see and recognize them when they solve problems for you and find issues. I think if you were the type of person that always took that credit your boat may have died in that yard in Tulsa. Valuable lessons Doug. A winner in a world of not winners. :)

Thanks for taking us with you. Moving moments. Proud sails... Your soapbox rant: I relate via writing music. I've never understood why so many musicians work at playing what famous musicians have played on their albums. I write and experiment on my own, looking for something that is mine. It might not be great or earn me a million dollars but it's something I did and that's what motivates me. Out of every 10 hours of music I create I get at least one hour that I love and the other 9 hours are lessons, steps that gave me that one great hour. Mistakes are exactly what you ranted about: necessary.

I don’t know for sure but maybe the mizzenmast bundle on the same side as the mast directs the wind to the front sail and gives it a little push forward. Just something I saw from the old photo you used in this episode. By the way it’s so wonderful to see your beautiful boat under sail. Makes me proud to be a BILGE RAT 🐀. Fine tuning….. my new favorite terminology. My wife and I bought a large touring motorcycle a couple years ago…. Discovered at our age we needed a camping “setup” that would give older bodies the ability to camp out without killing ourselves and make us want to stay in motels … after all, if a limited budget is a concern, camping is loads cheaper. That being said, we decided on a pull-behind cargo trailer for camp gear and a large one at that. The problems with a large one being that it’s easily overloaded and can cause a slew of problems making it dangerous to pull, (braking on the bike only)… so, after a summer of experimenting with tongue weights, the weight of everything in the trailer… whether or not items are completely necessary or not, general trailer “handling at highway speeds” took on a multitude of challenges I hadn’t even thought of before. So, after some fine tuning over the winter months, unloading things deemed earlier to be needed and replacing with lighter, more “hiker, backpacker style” where we could, made significant progress in the overall pulling experience (braking, no tail wag etc.), dialed our trailer in and now things just “flow” nicely… everything fits inside that’s needed, trailer tows beautifully…. Sometimes you just have to “fine tune” work the wrinkles out…. Because, “out there” isn’t where I want to mess with stuff…. A controlled environment is so much friendlier to “experiment”. Just my own experience.

Absolutely true. I had that same problem with a trailer load of hogs. The answer was to take more hogs. If I had half a load they would all manage to move to the back of the trailer. : )
