Raising the 50cwt tenor at Redcliffe Bristol + flipping the clapper.

This was filmed on a ringing tour with the Romsey Abbey bell ringers back in 2016, where we went to Bristol and visited St Mary's Redcliffe with the tenor weighing 50-2-21 and is the 6th heaviest ringable tenor in the UK. Also you can see the clapper being flipped due to being the wrong side of the bell. (corrected)

Good video. Surprised the clapper is turned when it is still ringing. With my Taylor tenor bell at Long Ashton which weighs 30.3.23cwt also cast in 1903 same year as Redcliffe essentially a bigger version of our tenor. We ring it up and then flip the clapper once the bell has stood with the hoop and stick.

I believe the tenor is light set. Which means it would be harder to stand it with the clapper on the wrong side of the bell.

This is the 2600kg tenor bell. It is the heaviest bell in this place. Weighs 2.8 US tons.

Bigger bells go up wrong as they are heavy and quite difficult to chime/check. So people tend to just get the bell up and then flip the clapper. This saves time and energy

It's very common when ringing a heavy bell up the clapper ends up on the wrong side.

It also depends on how much force the ringers put in to checking the bell. But yes, bigger bells do generally go up wrong.

The 10 is 1 ton and 11 is 2 tons

The 10th is 20cwt (1 tonne). The 11th is 25cwt (1.25 tonnes). And the tenor is 50cwt (2.5 tonnes)
