Rather than opening the J ring by pulling them wide open as you did try try bypassing the ends sideways. You will get less distortion of the J ring.

Yeah, opening the jump ring the way she does is sure to make the ring weaker. She has excellent taste, though.

If you had a professional nail file. You can control the speed of the Dremel type sander. Plus you can reverse the sanding process. Just an fyi may help any newbies. I'm new to clay art. I have both. Also I have a vacuum that nail techs work over help control some of the dust. My nails bit the dust when I hit menopause. So it has new life in my craft room.

Just my opinion here but you are basically ruining the jump rings by opening them the way that's shown here. You're supposed to open them by grasping one end flat toward you and "swinging" the other end away from you. The reasoning is two-fold: one is because you can then easily preserve the integrity of your jump ring and get a tight fitting close on your jump ring without having to squeeze the opposite ends forward to face each other again which rarely gets a good close fit. Secondly, the metal is bending and unbending which can lead to it being bent out of shape which then no longer works and must be discarded or it will cause breakage as the metal "work hardens."
@RaisingNobles3 жыл бұрын
thanks for the tips!
@erinwood49683 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you mentioned this because I was going to do the same. I just wanted to add that pulling the jump ring apart actually compromises the integrity of the metal and therefore it weakens it and can break. The earrings came out very pretty 😊

Hi. Loved this. Would acrylic paint work for this?
@kelcilewis2 жыл бұрын
Yes! But not all paints are compatible with certain brands of polymer clay. It’s a trial and error thing. If they’re not compatible then the paint will never really dry and it’ll stay sticky and be a mess. I use folk art and apple barrel brands but have also heard recommendations for liquidtex heavy body paint!

Thank you so much for your video of step by step! One thing I heard was baking it at 275 for 40 mins. Is there a reason to bake for 40 mins? I ask because I typically bake mine for 15 mins. Second question, do you typically drill your hole after baking or before?
@kelcilewis2 жыл бұрын
Baking time depends on the thickness of your clay. Mine are on the thicker side so I just do 40 minutes to make sure they’re completely cured! As long as your oven is set to the right temp and it doesn’t spike, you won’t burn them no matter how long you keep them in there for. I hope that makes sense! If 15 minutes works for you and they’re durable and flexible then that’s fine! I also drill my hole after I bake them.

The reason your jump ring bent like that is because of how you opened it. You are supposed to open the way that you dont so it doesnt ruin the ring.
