Following the footsteps of Meera Bai who relinquished the comforts of her royal palace, we have another Princess, Raamkali who took the path less traveled by. Resonating her pain, the Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai expresses his longing for detachment.
It seems in his youth days, Latif wandered for several years with the Nathpanthi Yogis, absorbing their lifestyle and being. This kafi (a form of Sufi verse) from Sur Raamkali describes the yearning of a Princess for the Yogis, her devastation when they left her one day to go on their own wandering ways. She has no fear of accepting a homeless mendicant's life and surrendering her privileges to a humble cause. She repeatedly pleads for the Yogis to return back and take her with them. They have painted her heart in the shades of saffron and now her solace rests with them. One can clearly feel this longing through the strings of Mooralala's magical tambura.
Perhaps the most striking quality of Mooralala's singing is the sense of unparalleled joy that one gets connected to. He belongs to a lineage of Meghwal Singers who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala claims to be an eleventh-generation singer and that his Santaar (tambura) must be at least 130 years old.

Rajasthan Kabir Yatra is a 7 days-long annual travelling folk music festival spread across six rural and urban locations in and around Rajasthan. Organised by Lokayan, Bikaner and partnered with Rajasthan Police, this is a folk festival providing a space where folk musicians, artists, scholars, students and seekers can immerse themselves in the voices of Bhakti and Sufi saint-poets such as Kabir, Mira, Bulleh Shah, and many more, questioning and dissolving boundaries of caste, class, religion and identity.
The five editions, in 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 were widely chronicled and appreciated. It brought together 50 artists, over 400 Yatris every year from other parts of India, and thousands of local audiences.
