One of, if not the greatest MC of all time. Rakim's story is a really interesting (and depressing) one of how despite possessing exceptional talent, the fact that he never "towed the line" and did what he was told so to speak, he never really hit the superstardom he deserved. This guy was held back by the record labels and it just goes to show that if you're not easily malleable and open to making manufactured crap, you might not make it all the way. Rakim did well anyway off of pure talent, but how many talented record artists have been forgotten in favour of the garbage that is pushed down our throats today?... The music industry is in a sad state...

Hip hop started as antithesis to pop culture, capitalist greed and marketing. It thrived on talent and minds kept out of mainstream success. That desperation and struggle made it relatable to common people. Now hip hop itself is a part of rich and lavish world that comes straight out of corporate board rooms and not from basement studio of some budding artist. At one point getting our of poverty and attaining lavish, materialist lifestyle was part of dream and narration of many rappers. Now its the only part that is left. How good rapper you are is determined on how rich you are and showing off that riches is really getting them fans...
