SYNOPSIS
In the play ‘Rakt-Abhishek’, set in time of last Mauryan King Brihdrath, the history comes alive with a message for our times.
In the 2nd Century B.C., the Greek king Menander was attacking India to realise the aborted dream of Alexander to conquer India and to avenge the defeat of Selucus by Chandragupta Maurya. Brihdrath, the last Mauryan king on the throne of Pataliputra was unable to defend the country, due to his excessive and blind faith in efficacy of non-violence (Ahinsa). The invading army of Greeks had reached Ayodhya. Their next target was Pataliputra. At this crucial juncture of history, the Mauryan army-chief Pushyamitra Shung emerged to save the country.
Senapati Pushyamitra Shung beheaded the vacillating king Brihidrath in front of the army, assumed power and repulsed the invading Greeks. The is the solitary incident of military coup in the Indian history, on which the playwright has based his play “Rakt-Abhishek”
The playwright and director Daya Prakash Sinha has effectively portrayed the duality of Indian mind, split between conceptual principles and the hard truth, idealism and the practical reality, non-action and the action and violence and non-violence.
“Rakt-Abhishek” compels us re-evaluate the half-baked understanding of ‘non-violence’. The ignorance of the true meaning of the concept of non-violence ultimately ushers in violence and massacre. “Rakt-Abhishek” is the saga of the internal conflict, that begets chaos, carnage and holocaust.
THE PLAYWRIGHT & DIRECTOR
Daya Prakash Sinha is an outstanding playwright of Hindi. He is actively involved with Hindi theatre for over five decades. In many Universities of India, scholars have done/are doing research for their PhDs on his plays. His plays are also prescribed in curriculum of various Universities. A number of his plays have been translated in various other Indian languages, and have been staged in most Indian cities, as also abroad.
For his outstanding contribution in the field of theatre, he has been honoured with most of the Awards available in the field, including “Akademi Award” by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, “Chamanlal Memorial Award”, by Chamanlal Memorial Society, “Lifetime Achievement Award in literature” by NBC Newsmakers, Mumbai; “Lohia Samman” by Hindi Sansthan, Lucknow, “Lifetime Achievement Award” by Vishwa Hindu Jyoti, California, USA. “Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Award” by Central Hindi Institute, Agra (presented by President of India, Shri Pranab Mukharjee.) etc.
