As an Arabian owner - THANK YOU!!!!! Thank you for calling out how absolutely disgusting the exotic Arabian breeders are! Too many people do not acknowledge how abusive and irresponsible this type of breeding is 🙏🏻 this is such an amazing breed and they have become unrecognizable from what they began as- which was a sturdy and well built horse that was perfect the way they were

This happens a lot with fish, too. Betta fish and Goldfish are the most abused fish out of all species and are also selectively bred to hell. Some Betta fish can't even swim because of how big their fins are through selective breeding and lead tiring and short lives. And there are some downright gross looking Goldfish breeds, like Bubble-eye Goldfish, which have huge sacs under their eyes that can easily pop and become infected or Celestial Eye Goldfish, that can't even see because their eyes are facing up. Most people don't really care about fish and treat them like they aren't living things, when they are, and it hurts my heart to see.

The number of times over the years that I have had people ask me if my Arabian is part quarter horse is astounding. No, he's an actual functionally bred Arabian horse. He just has good bone and muscle and a slightly dished face that is indicative of his breed. He's an Arabian that was bred to be a hardy performance horse with good endurance, not a delicate air gasping monstrosity.

As someone with a deviated septum who can barely breathe out of one of my nostrils, I agree with you it's cruel. Doing endurance exercise has always been difficult for me because I can only breathe through my mouth, otherwise I feel like I can't get enough air in. I feel bad for animals who adore physical activity like horses and dogs but can't get exercise because of how they were bred.

Normally, after a surgery, a dog would try to get the oxygen/gas tube out of their nose because it's extremely uncomfortable, but brachycephalic dogs like to have it in because it's so much easier for them to breathe, which shows just how uncomfortable they usually are. :( This is so sad and great that you are touching on this subject

I was horrified when I first saw this horse a few years ago. It reminded me a bit of what has happened to German Shepherd dogs. Both of these animals originally were valued for their physical fitness, endurance and strength - these valuable characteristics have been bred out to make them look a certain way. This leaves them as being good for nothing but being looked at. People are really stupid and prioritise the most ridiculous things.

Another point for the folks saying that it isn't all that bad. Since he's not an endurance arabian just a halter arabian... First and foremost this arabian is a horse. It's natural for horses to make miles, stretch their legs, run, buck, frolic and play. An obstructive airway infringes on that. Being able to act and express natural behaviour is part of animal welfare. It's so cruel to have animals fight for their breaths because of our silly "beauty" standards.

Restricting the airway while still having an athletic body creates an animal like the boxer that has a lot of energy and needs to expend that energy, but can’t because they can’t get enough oxygen when they try, even while breathing though the mouth, which a horse can’t do. It’s horrible.

I am a small breeder (not a back yard breeder), of Arabians. I'm glad you addressed this subject, Raleigh. I have had some outright arguments caused by my speaking out on this subject. I don't like calling it as selective breeding, because a good breeder should be selective to make sure that they are not breeding deformities or health issues. This trend is mostly through a group of of owners that got it into their feeble minds to breed "Living Art." It was the stupidest thing ever to take horses known for their superior ability in endurance and strength and distort the characteristics that made them the horse that improved most other light breeds. It's completely asinine. Arabians are known for longevity, and I guarantee that these horses that have been bred for exaggerated traits won't live long lives and the lives they have will be miserable. I am very selective with what I breed, because I breed old lines to preserve the Arabian horse in it's original form. The Arabian head is beautiful and recognized in it's proper form. I agree with you that breeders purposely breed traits that over exaggerate should be banned. And judges should be kicking them out of the show ring, not celebrating them.
@terrisomers7843
@terrisomers7843 5 ай бұрын
I couldn't agree more! But the problem with the judges is they know the owners/trainers/handlers/breeders. They're all interconnected, and the judges recognize whoever is whatever and will pin the class accordingly. I was also a small Arabian breeder up in the northeast. I bred very specific bloodlines. I bothered to show my stallion in 1 Class A Arabian show, and the judges never even bothered to turn their heads. So I started showing in Open Performance shows, and we started racking up wins. That's what got my boy recognized. None of my horses had exotic heads, but they were instantly identifiable as Arabs. Another issue with today's Arabs would be their size/legs. Look back at any of the old pictures of the breed from the 70's and 80's. They had much better legs back then. And we weren't seeing 16h horses as much as we are now. The breed's image as a versatile family friendly horse is pretty much gone now. 😢

People who breed can't seem to leave the Standards alone....they have to change them. That is why in Dogs, German Shepherds were ruined by American breeders. They wanted more angulation in there rears which made them almost walking on there hocks, let alone cause dysplasia in the rear. Thank you for bringing this up. People deform themselves for the sake of getting attention, making money, and because they are narcissists who often have other mental issues, so this "fad breeding" at it's worst, although disgusting, and abusive in my opinion with some of it (and also fad training), is nothing new. I surely hope that ethical, honest judges who really care about horses will put their foot down and not place these horses well, sending a clear message to those people who do this crap. However, because many judges who judge at the top levels have their primary source of income as their judging jobs (many of them started as trainers, but they put that aside to judge full-time), they clearly do not want to end up on the bad side of the powerful, monied breeders, owners, and trainers who have the power to blackball them and make sure they won't get those well paid judging jobs at the "A" shows, so many of them will do what they need to do in order to keep those movers and shakers in the industry happy and winning. I've seen this happen over the past 40+ years at Arabian, QH, Paint Horse, Appaloosa, Morgan, Saddlebred, Andalusian, and TWH shows I've attended with clients and while disgusting and abusive in many cases in my opinion, those with the money and power continue their BS with fad breeding and fad training because it's often the only way they can win.......at least for a while. I wrote an article about this issue 20 or so years ago that was published on commercial equine websites, but I can't find it now.

I went to animal grooming school in Boston, quite a few yrs back and this is one of things they STRESSED about a LOT.... Backyard breeding of animals. Specifically "designer" dogs & cats. At that time it was the "tea cup" version of already little breeds. There's no "tea cup" pom or whatever else that was gaining huge popularity bc useless celebs were carrying or selling "handbags" for dog carriers. Tea cup isn't a thing... What BECAME a thing was breeders literally breeding deformities. And usually they were breeding the runts of the litter, regardless of the OTHER genetic deformities that would be passed on along with the abnormally small sizes. We'd see dogs with ear, skin, & eye issues like YAAA no kidding these dogs are now having massive issues, these people are no longer only breeding the "pick of the litter" with these beautiful bloodlines traced back for decades.... Now they're mearly breeding the most deformed pup of the liter that had it been born in nature with no human around to help, wouldn't even have survived. It's exactly why you don't see "retarded" animals in nature. It's also why you hear about mothers eating their young, because she knows it probably won't survive and if it did, it may breed another genetic disorder that will pollute the gene pool, if you will. I found it all very interesting. One of the instructors had about 5 "hybrid" wolf dogs, which is a whole different level of utter cruelty that will break your heart. Edited to add: she had taken in these hybrids to try to give them some type of life after they were either found or give up bc they became too much for their owners to handle. Breeding a lonnng domesticated animal with a VERY wild, non domestic animal is absolute cruelty!! It's like half the dogs brain is screaming love me pet me, the other half is screaming get away from me, attack, kill 😳 can you IMAGINE having half your brain telling you to eat your family?! It's effn cruel & anyone that does this to an animal, well, let's just say alzheimers would be an easier ending to their lives, but I wouldn't be sad if that was their karmic justice. 🤷‍♀️ I'm just surprised this nonsense is spreading to the horse world now. I love how they say these animals have no health issues... Umm, they literally bred a deformity... That IS an issue. These people should be charged with animal cruelty and banned from ever breeding animals. Any animals. At this point, I question their ability to responsibly breed & raise humans

There’s really two types of German shepherds. Show line German shepherds technically have straight backs they just have short back legs and get hip dysplasia and back issues almost always and the look doesn’t just come from the posing in dog shows because even standing normally their back slopes down very obviously. However work line German shepherds (police, service dogs, farm dogs, guard dogs, etc) have equal length front and back legs so there isn’t such extreme pressure on their hips and back from them not being able to hold the spine straight so work line shepherds are much less likely to have those problems. Especially since people who responsibly breed work line shepherds specifically breed to have the most healthy, fit, and well behaved dogs possible so they can fulfill their import roles in society.

Retired Arabian horse breeder/trainer here. Thank you for bringing this up. Most of us who are involved with breeding older Arabian horse bloodlines meant to actually DO something are discussing this very issue. The Arab breed has historically been known for its "dished face, large nostrils, and teacup muzzle.", a description that has been taken far too literally. The true desert-bred type of Arab doesn't have that extreme look. The original description said that when the nostrils were distended while breathing, the appearance of the face being "dished" becomes more pronounced. The desert horses needed the large nostrils and sinuses to cool down the extremely hot desert air to prevent damage to the lungs. What's happening here is that over the ages, Arabian horses in art are usually depicted the way this colt looks. Extreme to the point of being comical. Don't get me wrong-they do have dished faces. Just not to this extent. But the only way we're going to get rid of it is when the big money breeders/owners/clients, etc, run out of supporters. Unfortunately, this kind of look is extremely popular in the Middle East as well as the behavior of the stallions being shown and allowed (and encouraged) to act up. Watch some of the shorts on KZbin, and you'll see what I'm talking about. The old-fashioned version of the Arabian horse is likely to become an endangered species at this rate. 😢

I can't see though how that would help any Arabs that are bred like this unfortunately. These poor horses are on a slow and agonising short life sentence. It is also the fault of people who buy these breeds. I have done research for half a year now to find the most healthy dog breed that also works for me temperament wise. Too many people get a dog just because of how they look like, and sometimes because the breed is popular. To be honest I wouldn't get a dog of those breeds even as a rescue (as to not give money to breeders), as they are very likely to need expensive healthcare throught their lives. I'm glad there are breeders who are trying to breed these dogs to be more healthy, as in the problem is recognized, but in some cases I think it would be better to just.. abandon the breed altogether. Even if they are slowly making them healthier, they will still have dogs with bad issues along the way.

Poor horse needs help, and lots of it - I don't know how he's still breathing Edit: during the explanation of the anatomy of a horse, I pressed down on my nose. Only a bit to mimic the obstruction roughly. Just a few seconds and I had to stop so I could breathe again or change to breathe through my mouth...neither of which these horses are able to do. Give it a shot and put yourself in their hooves for a second if you're struggling to see just how bad this is, even for horses who won't actually be used for sport

I remember the first time I saw a photo of this horse. I was horrified! I wondered why they hadn't put him down at birth, because I thought it was a tragic birth defect. I am with you 100% on this. I am involved with dogs, and it amazes me how Breeders can't seem to see their dogs anymore. There is nothing good or natural about a severely over angulated rear end! It is not "strong". It does not help a dog in any way. Yet many, many breeds are beginning to go toward this GSD rear end look. It's bad enough that a wonderful breed like the GSD has to suffer in this way, but to put in on other breeds? Breeds that are supposed to be athletic and have lots of endurance and agility? But the stuff with horses-the feet on Quarter Horses, these ridiculous heads, the auto immune and metabolic disease that are becoming more common. A horse is meant to carry or pull. Unless you are rich enough to just keep them as pasture ornaments. Why do people then breed for "show" an animal that they KNOW cannot do either of those things? Humans seem to want to ruin everything they get their hands on. I also lay equal, if not the majority, of blame on "judges" in these shows that keep rewarding these poor things for being deformed. Shame on them. They can just not place a whole class, if they feel none are worthy of placement. At least in dogs. They can award just one dog, or two, even with just third and fourth place. But they don't, because it would piss off too many people, and they would never get another assignment. There was a time when I was encouraged to become an AKC judge. Never. All that work, and I would be banned before long for tossing out whole classes. I don't know the answer, unless people just stop going to livestock shows of any kind, and that will never happen. PS: Selective breeding is not inherently a bad thing. It is what gives us domestic animals, healthier animals, more talented animals in their purpose. But, like so many things, people think that throwing two dogs together makes them a "Breeder". No, it makes them a puppy producer. If you have no idea about even basic genetics, the history of your breed, and which diseases and faults need to be eliminated, you have no business breeding. It is appalling to me, most of the people who call themselves "breeders". No, they are not.

@@griffy4379 exactly! I have a mini but prior to him I had standards and absolutely love the breed. My biggest peev now is the party poodles. Poodles are being bred with two colours and in doing so the breed standard goes out the window. I've seen many photos of these party poodles and they really don't have that beautiful athletic body anymore. There are oodle breeders who are trying to make a standard so that they can become registered breeders. People who buy these breeds love the long coat look but have no idea how to look after them and then find it's too much hard work to brush them regularly. So they take them to groomers who then spend hours blowing and brushing through the coats and they wonder why they're charged so much. So instead of going regularly to the groomers they try to save money and put it off as long as a couple of months to the point where the poor dogs are so matted that they can barely move. I've also had several Arabs over the years and my oldest boy actually had desert breeding in him. Not many Arab owners can say that. When I saw this photo I was mortified. These horses are beautiful animals as they were originally bred for endurance. I'd ride my boys all day long over weekends (as well as after work every day) and he loved it. There is absolutely no way this horse can be ridden for any length of time. Yes, this is another example of breeding for the show ring and after that it will be useless. It's such a sad and unfortunate situation when people decide to play God with the lives of innocent sentient beings. People have gone too far and this is a perfect example of what shouldn't be done to already beautiful animals.

The only way to stop this from happening is to create a culture from within the community that actively discourages and makes this not a desirable look or trait. I would like to know if Chihuahuas are included in the list of over bred dogs. I have owned several part chis, and they had no breathing problems, all high energy enthusiastic little guys, then one day I wound up buying a purebred from a show breeder, he had an small jaw defect that made him undesirable as a stud so they sold him without papers, the first time he got excited and started honking he was off to the vet who told us that trachea problems were common in chihuahuas and not to worry about it. The poor little guy would sleep all day just so he could go wild on the kids when they got home from school, we got a baby stroller for him because he would wear out on walks and hated to be left out, and couldn't keep up with the bigger dogs. I never had that problem with my mongrel chis, I think his lack of stamina had to do with breathing difficulties, and since the wheezing, honking thing is definitely not an advantage in showing, I don't understand why the breeders aren't trying to eliminate this problem, It certainly affected my pups quality of life, and when he died at thirteen it was a respiratory illness. I would have written this off as a one of, except for the vet telling me how common it was in purebreds.

Giant skulls, tiny snouts, and they are being bred smaller and smaller...no, they are NOT normal dogs and are victims of the extreme breeding trend that is inexplicably popular among many dog owners. People need to stop buying from breeders altogether. It just encourages them to keep producing deformed creatures that can't breathe, have back problems, malformed spines and legs, etc.

terminology point: technically 'selective breeding' is any breeding meant to select for certain traits; it's not inherently bad, as the traits you can select for can be things like health and temperament and fit to purpose (for example breeding racehorses to be built to run fast, or sheepdogs to have an instinct to herd sheep). it's only bad when it's selective breeding purely for the purpose of appearance (ie molding animals into weird uncomfortable shapes, selecting for certain colors and ignoring bad health in breeding stock in favor of this, etc)

Ugh Raleigh!!!! Thank you! You are doing so much good by bringing attention to thus and all animal abuse. I saw when you paused the video of Bel Ray showing his entire body and face and he literally looked EXACTLY like one of those plastic horses I used to collect in the 80s as a young equestrian. They (I assume) did that with the toys to show the characteristics of the different breeds by exaggerating certain traits. 🤔 I could be wrong, I'm 48.and don't have that collection anymore and haven't for like 37 years, but I swear that Bel Ray standing still with his short back, making the legs look way too long, and the intensity of the dish face notorious with Arabians, my brain said "STOP! Not real! Toy" and brought my back 45 years. I hadn't thought about those toys since I had them back them I don't think. I remember those toys helping me with learning the traits of the breeds by their "anatomy" that helped me learn for testing for my early ratings in Pony Club. But I never saw a horse QUITE this deformed. And that's what he is. Deformed. I later, after my nursing career burned me out, became a dog groomer. Brachycefalic (short nosed or flat faced) dogs were scare sometimes. They would pant so hard and fast at times their tongue would turn blue from not enough oxygen due to anxiety. As most people know, sometimes dogs get super nervous going to the groomer or the vet or even just riding in the car to get there. The other thing I had to be extremely careful of with these dogs, especially Pugs and Lhasa Apso's and Shih Tzu's, was not stretching the wrinkled up skin around their eyes over the top of the nose, an area that gets absolutely filthy from eye drainage, food (because they have to smash their entire face into their food), and dirt that collected in the folds and would cause eye infections etc. They had more ear infections and ear mites as a whole as well. But stretching the skin above the eyes to clean and clip out the hair that grows on top of the snout to allow them to see and lower the chance of filth getting into their big bulging eyes, that was very dangerous and I know countless groomers who have had a dog's eye pop right out just from stretching their skin as they're moving around. I know people see more Lhasa's and Shih-Tzu's missing an eye. It's all too common with them. And with Pugs you hear them coming long before you see them because they literally cannot breathe through their noses. They pant non stop and sound like their snorting or snoring literally all the time. It never stops, even when they sleep. In humans that is called "Obstructive Sleep Apnea" because their airways are obstructed they snore and snore and get to a deeper sleep and the snoring slows down and quiets and then they miss a breath or two or three and it startles them bringing them out of that effective deep sleep stage right when it starts, over and over and over and over again. Those dogs typically have cardiovascular problems, one being an enlarged heart because their heart is working way harder and pumping way faster than dogs with a normal airway from a linger nose, in order to make sure the blood is oxygenated for the organs and for their brains. When a heart is pumping overtime for years upon years, it becomes enlarged (because it's a muscle, muscles grow when they're worked hard, and when you have an enlarged heart (dog, or human), it takes up more space in the chest cavity, compressing the lungs to not be able to inflate all the way, causing faster more panicky breathing and inability to cool themselves in the heat, since dogs sweat from their tongue only, which can lead to heat exhaustion, cardiovascular and lung disease and early deaths. So.....do this to a horse, and they will have the same exact problems. Some people worship the money they make from the horse they bred to look a certain way, and some people worship their animals because they love them. Either way, right or wrong, when you only have them for 3-5 years or their offspring are either stillborn or too deformed to live a successful pr happy life, well???? Do NOT support these types of breeders. Do not buy a horse like this to show off and have people desire the significant "beauty" they see in thus deformity, because it will only lead to sick, unusable or dead horses more and more the more they make off of the people who buy them. Please stop breeding "DESIGNER breed" animals. There is no such thing. That has turned out some very damaged and distressed animals who end up in shelters or puppy mills (that you may not realize breed cats as well). If you go to a shelter to PLEASE adopt your animals, be aware that dogs with short noses or flat faces will be a costly animal from higher vet costs the shorter the nose is, and will most likely live at least 5 years less than other dogs and will have an anxious life of panting, excessive drooling and sleep deprivation. I know I spoke about dogs mainly, but that's because we haven't seen as much of this in horses, it's not as well known, but we see dogs every day who have problems from breeding for appearance. I feel it was easier to explain and now consider the face that dogs CAN pant. They can breathe through their mouth. Horses can't, like Raaleigh just said, so what can we expect? I know this is really long, bear with me. Lastly, what I see with Bel Ray, is a smaller face and the nostrils are pinched closer together, and the lower part of the eye socket is shortened. This is a disaster waiting to happen (and plenty of disasters had to have already happened to get to the "perfect" Bel Ray face, that's just a given. Breed a runt with a runt on and on and flip the coin for what you get, this is directly impacting the horses airway, breed for that over and over and you're going to have a lot of issues before you get Bel Ray. They won't tell you that they had stillborn foals with highly disfigured faces, but they did. It's a given. Bel Ray has normal sized eyes in a smaller eye socket. Keep breeding for this face and you're going to start having problems with eyes popping out. And unlike a dog, a horse really needs to see to stay safe. Their eyes are on the sides of their heads which is why they turn their heads to see things. Of course there are horses with missing eyes. But why risk that just to have what people think is a pretty face? Bel Ray's confirmation in general seems off. It's definitely from being WAY TOO Arabian.

Thank you for such a great explanation, you put into words what I was unable to. You are absolutely correct with everything you said about all animals. I'm totally appalled with what breeders today are doing. They are forgetting the "breed standard" which was created to improve the breed of any animal for health and well-being, this includes testing for illnesses such as eye problems, hip dysplasia and skin problems to name a few. Ethical breeders do this only and unfortunately they are few. Then you have breeders who only breed for looks and these people go right off the reservation and breed to extreme. This should not be allowed and needs to stop before they kill off entire breeds of animals, but not before they torture these poor creatures by the way they've been created. They are trying to create their own Frankenstein and before long that's what will happen, they take a piece of this animal and put it to the rest they've been creating. It's totally unethical along with abuse and in the long run, torture. I sincerely hope that more light is brought to bear for the sake of all these precious beings who are innocent in what their fate holds for them.

Another example of inhumane breeding of animals can be seen in Show Budgies. when one of my budgies passed of a disease (that ravaged his poor little immune system so quickly that we didn't even have time to get it fully diagnosed 😔) our vet raised wonders of weather we unknowingly had been sold a mixture between a regular and show budgie (due to his size etc.). Even before my budgie passed, I already despised the breeding of Show Budgies. They are like the pugs of the parakeet world and it is just SO unfair to the birds. Show Budgies are seen to often have worse immune systems than regular budges, leading to a heightened susceptibility and fatality rate of diseases. Show Budgies also often struggle to molt properly, fly normal etc. because they are bread to have ridiculous amounts of feathers (its not at all surprising that these poor birds cant function like a bird should, what would you do if you had to lug around that much feather weight all over the place, it's just so cruel for the birds).

And of course I know that Arabians are “on edge” and very sensitive but I don’t think their temperament is the whole answer as to why they keep their nostrils very open and they make noises even when they are just standing there. Of course the nostrils flare even more when they get excited or when they are in motion. I couldn’t really find any pictures of an Arabian horse with “normal” nostrils, just relaxed and calmly breathing.

The selective breeding is for a super shiny coat, but as a result, some foals are born with the syndrome. They are born naked, with teeth malformations, digestive issues and just a ton more. Most don't survive if I'm not mistaken.
