This I feel was an underrated era of the WRC. Though there are teams faster than others, having cars from 6 different manufacturers was fantastic to watch.

@@MsNessbitstill it wasn’t enough teams (we lost 4 in 2005) as the private ones couldn’t develop the car etc. 06/07 at least had title fights but then it went downhill from there. Also Citroen weren’t in wrc for 2006. They came back in 2007.

I was there when Marcus gronholm got told by the cop he couldn't drive his car back to service. There was me, my dad, and about 30 other angry spectators there, the cop felt so intimidated he called for back up. Marcus was curious and this is EXACTLY why we don't get international sporting events in Australia. In other countries, a rally car gets stuck? Spectators rush to help push him out.. but not in Australia because? "It's too dangerous". Bollocks

Yes, and what I have understood these late Mitsubishis, so pretty much all WRC class spec cars, were not good at all. When Tommi left the team after the 2001 season, there was no good results at all and I have heard the management was a mess in early 2000s too. When you don’t have the right and capable people pulling the strings that’s the result. So yeah, second place is pretty much a miracle with that car

This rally was the end of "The Golden Era" rally We saw many moments - Francois Duval's One&Only Wins - Harri Rovanpera's second podiums as it's last podium also farewell for Mitsubishi... - Colin McRae's amazing effort to reach podium especially first for Skoda Fabia sadly how dissapointing after hard effort "that" was unexpected...but at least everybody respect the effort to fix gears - Also 2006 weren't interesting as much 2005 with only domination of Citroen & Ford as Subaru Impreza "Hawkeye" didn't success as "Blobeye" anymore and later retire after 2008 as last Japanese Manufacter in WRC

2006 is the black sheep of WRC seasons in my opinion. A very strange season with the absence of so many teams, Subaru's decline from the sport, Citroen represented only by a private outfit, not to mention Loeb winning the title from home after a mountain bike accident. An interesting season for sure, but a season that represented a major decline in manufacturer interest in the sport, something that remains a big problem for the WRC to this day. If nothing else, I'm happy that the OMV team scored some podiums. Manfred Stohl did a stellar job in 2006.

@@TheOli123440 Stohl beat the works Subaru's and Sordo's Citroen in the championship in a year old Peugeot (which even the year when it was built wasn't exactly what you'd call fast), and was only 11 points behind the works Ford of Mikko Hirvonen. He really should have gotten the second seat at Citroen or some kind of works drive in 2007. It's a shame that his career more or less finished after that because he really was the star of the '06 season.

@@YBM2007 Depends on which era you're talking about really. In 2001 or 2002, you may have a point. At this time, however, Ralliart no longer had the Marlboro sponsorship, so all of the team's money came from Mitsubishi, who didn't have anywhere near the money Skoda, a member of the Volkswagen Group, had. Skoda Motorsport was simply a misorganised mess, plain and simple.

Fabia WRC wasn't bad car, only need good driver like Colin and team money... VW has both. I was very disappinted from last service... really clutch needed change 3 stages before finish? Nice rally, but last for Colin and Skoda motorsport in top WRC :/

there are rumours they didnt “allow” him to finish that close to the top as that would have made the other (‘local’) driver look .. well not amateur but not the best investment. as even though Armin was far the best test pilot according to the records, McRae had totally different view on setups what started to work on this rally. he needed a couple of months while before him there were no results for years.

Ford makes a early test with Focus from 2006, For former Skoda drivers Toni Gardemeister AND Roman Kresta already before the rally in australia 2005 despite the cost of their and the team's car regulation.

@@WRCSeb It was a problem with the gearbox, so it is very unlikely. I think he would have beaten Rovanpera if he had no issues but to beat Duval in the Xsara would have required him to drive completely on the limit with zero mistakes and zero margin for error. It was still an amazing performance from Colin, but the car advantage was just too big to overcome. It would be a bit like asking Lewis Hamilton to drive a Haas and beat Nikita Mazepin, driving a Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton is leagues and leagues ahead of Mazepin in terms of driver skill, but the Haas at least 1 and a half seconds slower a lap than the Red Bull. All Mazepin would have to do to win is drive at about 90% and not make any mistakes, while Lewis would have to be inch perfect every single lap and drive 100% or even beyond.
