Having been a Todd fan since the Nazz days I was a Utopia fan from Day 1. Saw that first incarnation with Ralph and Moogy several times (Hempstead, Asbury Park, Central Park-Another Live, etc.), and they were always mind-blowing. Can you say 'The Seven Rays'? Yes Utopia trimmed down to a 4-man unit and continued to rock our world but I always had a soft spot for the O.G.'s. So it was an astronomical twist when one day while I was playing in a band called African Cowboy, our leader Robert Berryman said, "Hey Ralph Schuckett wants to jam with us". He'd seen us gig in Echo Park, and Peter Shire, a mutual friend hooked it up. Wow! Our band did a lot of African and reggae material and he jumped right in and added a lot of flavor for the next 6-8 gigs we did. And what a super nice guy, we talked Utopia and Todd quite a bit. Over the years I kept up with him so I knew about his illness and it broke my heart when he finally succumbed. So sorry for all his family, friends and fans. He is dearly missed.

I had a conversation with Moogy Klingman a month or so before he passed away in 2011, and I mentioned how much he was missed for the Utopia reunion tour. He said, "Don't worry. Ralph can handle it." I thought he was being modest, but he said, "Ralph does things that I only dream of doing." About a year later, I caught up with another keyboardist, Barry Flast, and I told him the Moogy story, and he said, "Moogy was right. We all wish we were as good as Ralph Schuckett." Sadly, Barry, too, has passed on.

RIP Ralph Schuckett. Apparently he knew who sang the kid y right back at ya theme and now we can't ask who that singer is 😢

Carole King was Taylor's first pianist, then Dr. Clarence McDonald, and Don Gronlick were his the pianists from the seventies into the 80s. Gronlick also played a good bit for Linda Ronstadt. Ralph Schuckett played additional keyboards on Carole King's first three albums: Writer, Tapestry, and Music. Great to hear he still has his chops!
