This video confirms that Rizz sacrificed his own career for New Edition. As the miniseries showcased, he turned down a solo deal when Maurice Starr offered it to him. He even turned down DISNEY MONEY (Hollywood Records) for Christ sakes. “Don’t be Cruel” was actually HIS style for “Living in a dream” (he gave Bobby the green light to use it; he even did background vocals on “Every Little Step”). That’s one thing a lot of people overlook: out of all the members, Rizz & Bobby were the closest, as Rizz looked out for him. He, along with Ron, even tried to persuade the other members to let Bobby back for the “NE Heartbreak” (Slick & Biv refused to let him back in). Notice that in his two videos “sensitivity” remix & “stone cold gentleman,” Bobby was in it. Another example on how close they were. While I’m a fan of all the original members, they have shown themselves as selfish and egotistical towards him, as if they had hostility towards him. With the miniseries, I think it brought him a moment of clarity and brought up old wounds. He and Bobby aren’t even close anymore (dunno if that has changed, but they don’t even follow each other on social media). Jheryl Busby & especially Louil Silas dropped the ball in promoting Rizz as well as they should have for his 1st 2 albums. That’s another factor that a lot of people overlook. Either way, Rizz will always be that dude, and my favorite member!!!
@misterDjayMDJ2 жыл бұрын
I actually said about a year ago, what would NE Heartbreak sound like if Bobby was on the track with them. The hip hop/r&b swing of the song would’ve been a good fit for him to come back. Where did you hear this story from? Do you have any sources?
@charlesnyckd2 жыл бұрын
@@misterDjayMDJ Jimmy jam & Terry Lewis, Steve Hodge, and Bobby’s own former manager and former lawyer have all given accounts on both the making of NE Heartbreak and on Rizz/Bobby in relation to “Don’t be cruel” taking Rizz’ style from his life is a dream.” Bovine touched on some things during his appearances on the breakfast club. Rizz has kept a lot of shit to himself (he most likely has kept even more shit to himself, to be honest). Rizz is loyal to a fault, as it went against his interest. As far as NE Heartbreak, it was definitely a new Jack swing album (as Jam & Lewis were new Jack swing producers, as were LA & Face, Timmy Gatling, and Teddy Riley, all who worked on Don’t be cruel). Being that Bobby was a New Jack artist, it woulda been a no-brainer to bring him back for the NE Heartbreak album. Biv & Slick weren’t speaking to Bob at that point, but Rizz & Ron wanted to bring him back. Jheryl Busby & Louil Silas were totally against him going on the NE heartbreak album, both due to the issues that Bob caused on the road that lead him getting voted out, and also they invested a lot of money into Bob being a solo artist.

Where did you get that interview from Ralph I heard it years ago but couldn’t find it recently
@misterDjayMDJ Жыл бұрын
No it wasn’t, it’s written that Every Little Step initially was going to be for Midnight Star but it eventually went to Bobby. There’s only the rumor that Ralph sang vocals on the track for whatever reason which Ralph didn’t entirely confirm but didn’t deny. Unless you have a credible source, that ain’t true. It Would’ve been cool though but Ralph wrote and produced Living In A Dream on his own prior to submitting it to MCA, he didn’t mention working with Babyface on the project at all.
@charlesnyckd Жыл бұрын
@@misterDjayMDJ there’s been rumors that Rizz sang vocals to prevent LA & ‘Face from leaving the studio building, due to waiting on Bobby (who was getting high). You can clearly hear Rizz in the chorus, but Rizz never confirmed or deny that either. So it’s possible. I know for a fact that ‘Face and Kevon Edmonds did background vocals though.

Maaaaan...these guys almost messed up the best thing that could happen to them. I'm not saying Ralph is the whole group, but let's get it str8, Ralph is a big part of what NE is. In all fairness, all 6 of the members bring something special to the table, but if you start plucking them away from the group, there is only one person that if he leaves, the NE sound goes with him - and that's Ralph. I've been riding with NE since the beginning and all I know from all the shows I've gone to is that when Ralph starts to do his thing, the ladies go crazy. Bobby Brown did the right thing and just stepped out on faith. I think once they saw that he didn't need them, they were like...yeah...you can come back if you want to. Maaaaan, I would have never come back if I were Bob. I would have toured with them and even did some on-stage work with them, but I would never have come back to do an album. Anyway, closing out...Rizzo is the reason NE is still relevant. Take him away and NE dissolves. Peace!

Ralph had so much potential going for him, as the lead singer of "NE", he had so much potential period. It's so sad that he didn't get all of his just do and his creative gifts & talents out on a very, very large scale, with excellent writers, excellent managers that took total interest in Ralph and his gifts, excellent supporters, background dancers, etc. Ralph should have had it all, because he was loaded with tons & tons of gifts & talents.❤️😞

Man, I appreciate this video so much! The NE fandom really needed this, especially since a lot folks have been clowning Ralph over his solo career ever since that damn movie aired - it's not like he FLOPPED, he just got outsold by his bandmates. You always see people try to paint him as a jealous diva just like they did and still do with Otis Williams; it irks me how fans think they have these people completely figured out based on seeing DECADES of history compressed into A FEW HOURS of a biography that was clearly given the Hollywood treatment. That being said, I think RT's solo outing flew under the radar not for a lack of anything on HIS part but because of timing and a lack of the proper figures in place to develop him as a separate entity from the group. He had the looks, the stage presence and the voice, he just needed a sound that was his own - everybody can't be Michael Jackson, but RT could've been a way bigger force in R&B than he became. It seems in 1990 he was caught between two eras and the music climate was quickly changing. Nobody should be giving him grief over not outshining the others. Give this man his flowers while he's still here. Ted Talk over LOL

Thanks alot for watching and your comment. Honestly I don’t understand where the Ralph flack even comes from because if nothing else, this video showed that he always put NE first. He even said he enjoyed being a member of NE more than being a solo artist. That man loves the group and there have been WAY WORSE lead singers in history. So for Ralph to be getting the flack that he gets from NE fans is blasphemous. Since I’ve start uploading these sorts of videos, I’ve seen negativity towards him here and there. Back in the day, releasing albums was all about strategic timing. Like you said 1990 was a gray area because the music that was selling that year wasn’t really selling the following year or so afterward. And Ralph dropped last so it wasn’t on him. But we know what it is, thanks again Justan!

There’s definitely some revisionist history that has also taken place with Ralph’s career. People say he flopped but he did not he was everywhere during the era when his album came out. It went gold on pre-sales alone. He won best new pop artist at the Billboard awards that year. Now I do think it gets discounted because he didn’t nurture his solo career over the years like the rest of them and just fell back into only doing gigs with NE which gave way for people to discount how popular he really was at the time.
@ltopomcfly558310 ай бұрын
I agree to a degree. I think people just feel he should've been bigger than the other 4 members because he's the front man, but the truth is his label didn't push the album enough. It stayed in the RnB lane like Johnny Gill when it had more crossover pop appeal than Bobby or BBD. Its probably because Bobby and BBD made sexy RnB popular and Ralph is the master of clean "bubblegum" RnB like Michael Jackson. But even Michael was trying to be New Jack Swing at the time.

After hearing bits and pieces from various interviews, now I know for sure that there was more to the story that was never told. NONE of them would have been anything w/o Ralph. And yes, that includes Bobby too! All of their (Bobby & BBD) success came at the expense of Ralph.

100% true, even today I believe that tension between the group and Ralph could possibly still be there to an extent. Particularly the “business partners” thing. There’s a lot of groups and bands out there that will only come together just for touring or some sort of business opportunity but outside of that they don’t speak. In the Closer Look doc, he seemed really isolated from the rest of the guys except Johnny. Now all of a sudden he’s the under-appreciated one who gets the least shine off the stage. When in reality New Edition wouldn’t have gotten far without Ralph. After 1988, the world was looking at Bobby; and Ralph was the one who influenced that whole thing. That’s a story worth telling, he deserves credit for that.

“Stop trying to attribute their success to Ralph” I can and will, you know why? Because without Ralph there would’ve been no Candy Girl, Cool It Now, Count Me Out and he carried that group on and off the stage after Bobby left the group. Who sang all the lead and background vocals? Who never missed a performance until these dudes tried to act like he wasn’t the one holding the group down. There would’ve been no Heart Break album if it wasn’t for Ralph. If he wasn’t there to lay that foundation for almost 10 years, MCA wouldn’t have been interested in no damn BBD. For whatever reason it’s like people don’t like this guy as if he had a David Ruffin attitude. I respect all members of New Edition BUT we not gonna sit here and act like Ralph wasn’t the MVP of the group. His side of the story should be told just like there’s. At least this proves that Bobby Brown was doing drugs BEFORE he met the beautiful iconic Whitney Houston. It proves Whitney's @Lifetime movie lied. The more Black negativity, the more likely you are able to get a movie. We noticed in the 3-part New Edition Story, Ricky Bell's alleged drug addiction was focused in details. Whereas, Ralph's mother dying was barely mentioned. Ralph was the most talented, most caring and most generous of the group. It's not too late. We would still love to see a Ralph Tresvant movie.

Ralph sacrificed his dreams and success to please his friends and group members. If he would’ve gone solo he would’ve gone solo in the 80’s he would’ve had as much success as Michael Jackson did breaking out at as a solo artist. He could’ve still did albums with his fellow members and stayed in the group.

The fact the Mike felt a type of way when he sent his mom to Ralph’s house after calling him a business partner is pretty crazy , I know that’s crazy but you wouldn’t send your mother to handle a “business partner”.

Never so much had I wanted to hear an album that never existed lol recently Ralph did an interview where he was asked about the living in a dream album he gave a brief description of what it would have sounded like but that the tapes got destroyed 🤷🏾♂️

Bobby just had 1 hot album and sound at the right time , Bel Biv DeVoe only had 1 hot single at the right time , but Ralph was the most talented with the most unique voice and he always had the most potential , It was just never fully realized , and he probably sacrificed alot of early solo opportunity to not dissapoint the group or make them feel left behind.

Bobby album bobby his 3rd did well with humpin get away and other songs it wasn't as big as don't be cruel but it still did well. But bobby focused more on supporting Whitney. Now BBD and JG next albums definitely didn't do as well

Apparently, one of the original tapes was stolen from Ralph’s mother’s house in Boston. And any other copies were destroyed when the MCA headquarters was burned down in 2008. Very unlikely that we’ll ever hear it.

Ralph might have been gonna do that two dancer style but hip hop had been doing that. Big daddy Kane, rakim, of course Kid N Play did the rapping and dancing since 85 86. So maybe he got it from hip hop. Looks like hammer got his whole style from New Edition and Bobby. Of course they were all inspired by temptations and James brown performances.

I'd remembr in the miniseries that Disney offered Ralph a $6,000,000 contract. I always wondered how his career turned out if he accepted that deal
@misterDjayMDJ2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if whatever label he was in talks with at the time was called Disney. Disney started Hollywood records in 1990. But either way, it would’ve been a big deal because it was practically tradition for the lead singer of a group to go solo. All eyes would’ve been on Ralph especially since 1987 was a grey area for music until Bad and Sign of the Times came out. He would’ve had that lane to establish himself for sure.
@misterDjayMDJ2 жыл бұрын
Would’ve been a breach of his contract with MCA if he did that. The only place he would’ve been able to start was MCA. Or whatever label was interested in him at the time would’ve had to buy him out of his contract with MCA, and then he would’ve been in debt to that new label. Pros and cons to both scenarios.

@@misterDjayMDJ been rewatching your NE videos over the past week and rewatched the NE Story too. Theoretically, the best if not only time Ralph could've been selfish and did his own thing was when Maurice offered him a solo deal. He probably would've blown up with a solo album rather than the Candy Girl album. However, there's no telling how far he would've gone because it all depends on if he would've gotten taken advantage of with his first contract and moved to another label. On top of that, I LOVE how you mentioned the breach of contact if he jumped at the Disney deal with 6 million bucks because Ralph's hands were tied. Disney (or whatever label it was) would've had to pull a Jump & Shoot by attempting to buy Ralph out of his MCA deal (like J&S did with Maurice's contract) which could've been a disaster by putting him into a deep hole of debt; AGAIN. Even though it stinks for Ralph, everything happened the way it was meant to happen. It's just sad that the person who seemed the most destined for a solo career sadly had the least successful solo run out of the rest of the group.

@OurKindofEntertainment it’s crazy you say that because since I’ve made that video I wonder how different it would be if I made it again today versus back then. Because my thoughts on Living In A Dream are a bit different now having done since I started making the album retrospective videos.
@OurKindofEntertainment3 ай бұрын
@@misterDjayMDJ Yeah, I actually looked at A Closer Look for the first time last night because I didn't even know that Ralph interview existed! Heck, I'd welcome a redo of this video because as bad as I feel for Ralph; there was just so much he couldn't do even IF he wanted to as a solo artist because of bad contracts and debt. I never even thought about Bobby getting removed from the group being a blessing for him because he wasn't burdened with the $500k debt each member of the group found themselves in with MCA due to helping them get out of their contract with Jump & Shoot. Living In The Dream could've been a time for Ralph's solo break pre-Heartbreak considering the group was sitting around for a couple of years anyway after Under The Blue Moon anyway. You'd think MCA would welcome Ralph's solo record to encourage more hype for Heartbreak because I'm surprised it only sold 2 million records. Although, if the record did VERY well then I could see them more focused on a 2nd Ralph album OR the album would've fed Ralph via sales and tours for YEARS like Don't Be Cruel did for Bobby! Johnny would've still come to MCA as a solo artist, BUT Bivens' insistence of him joining the group might've saved NE from getting dropped considering it was said the label wasn't interested in a non-Ralph version of the group. However, Johnny might've been the deciding factor in that. I think I feel bad for Ralph mostly due to the backlash from the BBD members who should've been far more grateful to him because he did what he could to get the people working on the NE records to give them a little more than the crumbs on an album. That part of the NE backstory makes me hurt from him more than the lack of major wins as a solo artist because these fellas were supposed to be brothers. BBD banded against Ralph instead of the higher ups who actually made the calls of who sang what on which albums! As I said, things worked out the way they were supposed to. It's just a shame that arguably the most selfless person in NE got the short end of the stick in the longrun. Bobby won because he WAS selfish, the BBD members all had their success and Johnny doesn't really count since he didn't come into NE until after the chaos had already been established. Sure, Ralph sang lead on MOST of the NE records. However, the bad contracts they signed and whatnot weren't necessary a way for Ralph to cash in on his time as the lead singer...

Alot of what Ralph told NEHISTORIAN was only covered in 3 scenes from the movie. The part with jherl and Ralph being the most important one. Ralph was denied the solo project by MCA(Jherl) because technically MCA didn't have a NE project yet. Jump & Shoot had that production deal but MCA didn't eat from NE until King of Stage.

The narrative about Bobby's leaving the group changes every other season. First he quit...then he was kicked out...now he was half fired and half quit. It seems like whenever Bobby is back with them, the back story favors him. Whenever he's not there, the story is that he was a troublemaker and had to go. I'm tempted to believe that his behavior put him on extremely thin ice, and that if he did walk away it was probably because he knew he was about to get the ax.

I think things went the way they should have as it created a full 6-man crew of 4 strong, viable acts. Jam & Lewis suggested the BBD premise and it worked, with that album having 4 crazy singles. I just wish the NE Crew didn't mess with the drugs.
