The books and movies are filled with lots of BIG no-no's, to the point where people who are actually involved in the BDSM community boycott both. Christian is essentially the exact opposite of what a woman should look for as a Dominant, let alone a partner. He actively lies to her, ignores her safeword, does things to her without consent, etc. The undressing of Ana is literally just the icing on top. The only women who actually enjoyed these films are essentially who they were wrote for and by, middle aged women who fantasize about an intense BDSM-based relationship, while also having what amounts to no understanding of the core practices that make it what it is.

Well, he's not wrong: relationships between adults are often more complex than just having an abuser and a victim. With that being said, and judging only by the content he wrote, I really doubt that he put that much thought into that line, which in the end makes it kinda dickish from his part... And speaking of movies that try to blur the lines between what is consensual and what is not I've definitely seen worse. I don't recall the name of the movie but the 'antihero' was, in fact, a rapist. Film that I destroyed then threw in a sewer... XD Fifty Shades of Grey is bad but honestly it was more boring than offensive. Sure, Christian is a dick and Anastasia is, well, not very bright, but their conflicts are not that interesting. If they had a 'folie a deux' type of thing going on, where Grey manages to break her will with mind games and she eventually snaps out of it, that would have been nice. Even better, she gives him a dose of his own medicine in the third act and finally they reach an agreement to never see each other again, that would be way better than the movie we got!

2 years late, but one of my favorite filmmaking anecdotes is that during the filming of The Shining, the crew put a fake door up for Jack Nicholson to chop through for the famous scene. But Jack just blasted right through it because he had been a volunteer fireman and actually knew what he was doing. So they replaced the fake door with a real door, let him go to town, and the rest is history. Every "thunk" of the ax sinking into the solid door... the cracking, the splitting, the splintered wood exploding through the other side, that's all tension! Jack has to actually put in effort to do it, and by the end of this task, Jack's flushed face helps sell that this guy is really off his rocker, which is exactly the point! The moral of the story for aspiring filmmakers is this: authenticity is king. You can't _pretend_ to chop down a door. You also can't _pretend_ to trip over thin air... not without it looking obviously phony and subconsciously pulling your audience out of the moment, which is about the worst thing you can do.

It is so sad. I will pray that they get better porn. Seriously tho. I have great sympathy for all these middle-aged women who bought the erotica. Maybe the fact that the BDSM aspect was so minor, that it was like intro porn for people who did not know they were into such a thing before??? Anyway. Hopefully now they will move on to better written porn and no will have to suffer a franchise this bad again.

Doesn't it seem disturbing a bunch of strangers would gather in a theater to watch this trilogy of boring softcore porn? It reminds me of those 1970s adult movie theaters in New York which lonely men would casually visit every weekday night.

The movie "Secretary" (2002) - A young woman meets a successful man called Mr. Grey (who is dominant, but started as submissive) for the first time in his office, after being kind of scared by his assistant. After some time, they enter in a BDSM relationship, they break up for a while and then they get married. She is the one, who opens his heart and gives him courage to face his true self. This and many more details were copied into this book. It is like with "Harry Potter" and "The Worst Witch". Act by act, character by character just a copy of something created before. Not a compilation, no, everything just from one source.

Dominic Noble's "Lost in Adaptation" takes on these movies are awesome, he does an in-depth comparison with the books (which was so taxing that he could only do one of these per year). Going by his analysis, the movies (including acting and dialogue) are actually a decent improvement on the books, which speaks volumes about how horrifyingly bad these books are.
