Non-of the other KZbin creators can go where you go and do what you do. Keep it up! PS. I have a small camper I use for boondocking as well. I'm not a campground guy and like to get back in the middle of nowhere, often some rugged roads and more so a smaller trailer for agility in all directions is needed. I've done my share of sleeping on the cold ground and tired of midnight duty runs that wake you up, so have graduated. Anyway, clay is similar to sand with these acting like an anchor. First thing I did was lift mine, and get larger/off road tires for flotation and to deal with sharp rocks. Today some of these come with larger off road tires like his, even nice suspensions with better articulation which is very helpful. Even with the right tires though, you want to air down here for flotation. Given the other ground was firm, maybe he was surprised, so caught it too late. But, I like these videos because as an avid outdoorsman who is often alone, it's nice to see different recovery tactics and even better when Matt does the same thing I would do. This guy was buried, especially with the limitations of his rig. Looks like he had decent AT tires, but still a little small even if he wants to keep it stock and easily remedied without modifications. At least he did not have the larger wheels that work against the capability of the vehicle eliminating flotation and side wall grab, though one must get rid of that air dam; potentially the entire front bumper because if it did not already, it will cause big issues and would not last long for me. The steps too, they are not drag bars and will only work against you, again especially when you have little to work with in terms of lift and a long wheelbase. Even a 2" or 4" lift helps here, but I also thought his model had the air bags on all wheels? Regardless, a couple small mods gets that mall cruzer more able to deal with the modest roads it appears he wants to tackle with this. Why pay for the off road capable trailer if the vehicle can't handle it. Also, get rid of that bike rack and ensure the trailer jack is as high as it goes. You need better entry and departure angles. But then again, everything here is new it appears and probably on his maiden voyage, so time will resolve and my rant is over. But to the situation, my first thought when he drove up was to unhook, and I likely would have hooked back up where Matt did as well, digging out in front of the trailer tires and ensuring I had some grab for the TV. Maybe Matt is hesitant to remove because recovery is better with both vehicles, but again as someone who does this alone, I am self sustaining and have removed my trailer more than once. Additionally, I plan for weather, so I always try and orient my trailer so that I can get it out should conditions get bad. But like here, sometimes you just get surprised, or misjudge the conditions. He has a decent setup, so kudos to him for getting out there and beyond those city's we call campgrounds. But you also need to pay more attention as you are alone...

I've noticed that a lot of people who get stuck have street tires. Made that same mistake myself and ended up dropping into a ditch and denting my truck. I'd easily walked through two feet of snow the previous year but tires will wear. As soon as I got myself unstuck I drove back to town and put some all terrains on my truck. Went back to the same spot the following week , the road was worse by then, and drove up that dirt road without a problem. The right tires make a huge difference. P.S. Matt, I totally binge watch your videos.
@loganholmberg22955 жыл бұрын
The Ram guy had proper tires though. Yeah he didn't have mudders like on the jeep but that might make towing on the highway problematic. He had a lifted trailer and good tires. I think his only mistake was the ground he choose to park on.

Hooking onto that van which had no receiver or other decent hooking point on the rear is one of many classic examples of why the average or most for that matter passers by willing to help have no where decent to hook onto unless one has the special towing chain tools. I've seen my share of weak bumpers or other too fragile a hooking point do some pretty major damage to a vehicle and then you really pay vs having it towed properly with the right equipment looking very cheap about that point. And then the examples of using a chain only and needing to get a "bit of a run", wow is all I can say to that, carnage alley !
@44PDX5 жыл бұрын
More than one person has had the front bumper/clip pulled off or had suspension damage due to incorrect hookups and not having the right equipment. Mostly only tow companies will invest in the various J hooks and T hook frame toggles to properly recover vehicles without a secure outside tow connection. The front bumper screw in tow eyebolt supplied with passenger vehicles today really aren't sufficient for a hard pull recovery. On the beach, rather than risk pulling out and damaging a car, I've given people the phone number of the local tow company that will come out with the right gear. It'll cost but end up cheaper in the long run.
@charlesb42675 жыл бұрын
@@44PDX Exactly, I mentioned the rear because of the example in this video but the front being just as bad if not worse for hooking onto with what the average person usually has that is carrying anything in the way of a chain/tow strap/rope etc. So ironically its usually the "real" 4x4's that will have something decent to hook onto on the front in the way of tow hooks and hopefully came equipped with a receiver in the rear. I'll only hook onto a vehicle I feel will not be damaged by my doing so and also if its in a ditch of a busy road I won't touch it because I don't have the beacons and no liability if anything were to happen. I'll gladly give a person a ride to safety/help and a warm vehicle to sit in rather then freeze to death if there's is non operational ( again Canada with our 10 months of winter in a year LOL ).

Suggestion Matt? In a situation like the camper being separated from the truck. You can drop the hitch down to a 6" or 1ft height, use your spare Jack to lift the tongue. Place a shovel under that, lower the the hitch back down on top of the shovel. Use your tow rope to gently pull the trailer gently around to where you can back under it to avoid getting into a sloppy area and onto more of a solid and more firm ground. I've had to do this a lot and its kept me from having to back into a mid hole, sand and deep snow. It slides the tongue out to get access to and makes things easier in a pinch. You live and learn in the middle of nowhere.

Same here in an old 80s Cargo master with my Dad and brothers as a kid. It rained so hard everything was soupy mud and we are 100 km deep in northern Manitoba bush on an abandoned road. Ended up towing the 18 ft aluminum boat and trailer out of the lake by hand using a log across the crank arm mount and then the 4 of us pulling the thing 300 ft up a muddy hill to the gravel road. That was the easy part. Getting the van out while faster was sketchy as F. We ended up blazing a new road in one section as the ground was more stable cause it had grass on it. It made the 2 abandoned bridges we used to take to get there feel like nothing on the way out. lol. You can't get in there anymore cause the gov took the bridges out eventually. My Dad and his friends did it a few times after that buy using the boat to ferry an atv at the bridge crossings. I continued to be amazed at what my Dad will do for good Pickerel fishing.

First excellent camera work nice and steady and in a smart location so you did not need to run like ram driver. Then some are second guessing the drivers, neither spun till the vehicle was buried to the axle so this made getting out easier than if you bury to the axle. You learn from your life lessons you may be commenting on someone that has made their million and are retired early but no never experienced the mud and hopefully they will now and not be scared of it. Some planks or the plastic things can get you some movement and you can often get out that way, if you do not spin till your axle is buried. Someone that is driving across the country on the highway should not run off road tires, if they stay reasonable someone can help them out for that one time they need it. Excellent video.

Every Last One makes me laugh. I do not know what I find so utterly amusing about this off-road Recoveries, but I love them. I also love how the customer often underestimates how good Matt is at this. The man with the black pick-up, obviously did not expect Matt to just immediately pop his trailer out of the muck. He ran 6:55 like a scared rabbit.
