You need a small diesel heater, the same as they use for van builds, tap into your diesel tank and you have plenty of heating capability that doesn't rely on battery.

True Blue Travelers build campers and trek all over the world, and all of their cold weather rigs use those tiny little diesel heater pumps. very simple, not expensive, and put out good heat for the fuel consumed
@michiganengineer86213 күн бұрын
My old Live trucks that I used had generators that drew off the main gas tank. The generator fuel intake was set high enough in the tank so if it had LESS THAN a quarter tank the genny wouldn't run. It would be easy to do the same thing with this rig and a diesel heater. The camper shell is small enough he could probably use one of the Vevor heater units like "Ken's Karpentry" (YT channel) is doing with his Vardo camper trailer.

I do a lot of winter camping and hunting in a custom built trailer. When the weather is crap and everyone leaves the fire at 6:30 there is no shame in retreating to the camper to shut out the wind, rain, or snow, enjoy a movie, and crank the heat. After all that is why we built it with all the creature comforts we did!

Hey, modern diesel don’t do well idling for many hours because the soot from the engine doesn’t get burnt and eventually clogs the exhaust pipe. They make little heaters that run on diesel. I would highly recommend it.

As far as starlink goes, you could probably build a weather proof hole to run your cables through. Either if you mount it on the roof or on the ground. I would also suggest adding something like a chromecast or amazon firestick that way you don't even need any other machine connected to the TV and only need an active internet connection to watch things. For accessing your roof, you might consider building a foldable ladder that can be stored neatly against the back of the truck when not in use. When it comes to heaters, buy you a cheap wattage/amp tester that you can plug devices into before you add the items to the truck. That way you get an idea of what the wattage requirements are prior to deciding for certain what portable battery you want to go with for power.

It would help to separate the rear area from the front with a thick curtain. This would reduce the workload on the trucks heater/AC while driving, decrease the space that needs to be heated at night, and make driving much quieter.

When I got Starlink at launch the V1 dish was $599. They have reduced the manufacture cost, but the cheaper version is offset the same as a phone plan vs buying the phone outright. That's why the roam plan uses the pricier dish, plus if you are actually moving in the vehicle it works better, maybe?

Look at Webasto heaters, that should do the trick instead of the power hungry electric heater. Good job Chris
@baloneyjusticecheezedog3 күн бұрын
Starlink is amazing for overland life. I would argue you should keep it for the boat and camper because it can do so much for you when you do need it. The camper really should have a full interior of some kind. I also argue you will want a curtain between the cabin area and living space area so you can keep heat inside the cabin in case you want to step outside. Probably the best thing you can do is take out one of the back seats to help with that. Also, I don't think you will go for this, as the most obvious choose is just to put a diesel heater, but you might want to look into heat pumps. They are electrical driven but don't work like normal heaters. Normal heaters kinda suck because they just run power though a resistant material and turn electric into heat. You could just as effectively do the same thing with a gaming computer and be entertained while doing it. Instead, heat pumps suck out heat from the inside using a liquid that brought to a freezing state with a compressor, and then in a radiator that heat is released by creating a vacuum.(It's basically like an air conditioner in reverse.) Heat pumps are cool in that they can also can work in reverse and take the heat out from your inside area to keep you cool. Whatever the case is, they are said to be 300 to 400% more effective than electric radiant heaters like you were using.. But the bad is they do need space to work since you need two radiant surfaces to transfer the temperature from and too.. And then also a pair of air conditioners.. It's more of a thought experiment idea then a working product, and I'm not sure whether you can get a mini split to work in the RV. Like I said, the real answer is a Small Diesel heater.

Man once you finish it out its going to be so great! A diesel heater would be great. But have you thought of a diesel generator? A generator would give you the ability to run heat, ac, and everything. It would be expensive, but for what you ar eplanning inthink a built in diesel generator would be amazing. Also this is a bit crazier, but you could find a used one off of an old rv. they are bullet proof and almost always have low hours. Junkyard digs basically roadkills an ev every year for nascar and they always seem to get the generators working. Anyways thanks for the great content!
