Ram Dass Here and Now - Episode 39 - Trungpa Rinpoche Part One: beherenownetwork.com/now-epis...
================
Ram Dass talks about his relationship with the great Tibetan Lama, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
Includes detailed moments with Trungpa Rinpoche and Ram Dass at different events and venues in the early 70’s where Trungpa was teaching- the methods he used with his students and the dismay of many who were offended by his unusual behavior and teachings that were enigmatic to say the least. Ram Dass delves into a substantial issue around teachers in the West that are unconventional and sometimes divisive yet can provide students with a path that allows for real growth.

When I was young, I experienced a very strong awakening of my connection with Vajrayana and Tibeten Buddhism. The first book I read was Trungpa Rinpoche's book 'Journey Without A Goal' I never met Rinpoche. However, he was still alive at this time. I ordered a cassette tape of a teaching. I remember waiting, everyday, waiting for the big brown UPS truck to pull up and deliver my package. Day after day, I would open the window, taken in the fresh spring air, and look down the street to the intersection, waiting for the truck to turn down our street. The day before the tape arrived, I was waiting in my usual yearning way. There was a gentle breeze, and I looked up at the silvery white and ashy gray clouds. I heard something that sounded like a weird raspy voice emanating and seemingly riding the wind teaching Dharma. I sat for a while experiencing this strange phenomena. The truck did not arrive. Disappointed, I went about my teenage business. The next day, the truck arrived and I excitedly unwrapped and prepped the tape for playing. When the lecture by Trungpa Rinpoche started rolling and the voice was emitting from the speakers, I was in awe to heard the same voice I heard from the clouds and winds the previous day. This was the moment I realized the Trungpa Rinpoche is no ordinary being. Even later when I heard more wild stories, I always know there was a deeper purpose going on. One of his old time students told me, the guru takes on the karma of his students. Realization is the birth right of the Asian saints. It is also the birthright of the smoking weed, alcohol drinking, love making, sharp dressed westerner. This too can be sacred and meaningful. Religious costumes do not impart realization and business suits do not impair it. If you are disturbed by his behavior, look at who is being disturbed. If you believe this a bad image of Buddhism. Why are we trying to control image of Buddhism? The essence of Buddhism is Mahamudra. What image does it possess and which marketing agency should we use to increase sales? We will become billionaires kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2PLpGSKlNyijMk

Ram Dass and the baby are both babbling, enjoying hearing themselves talk. At least the baby will outgrow it.

Thank you very much for sharing this. Unfortunately I can not understand due to the poor audio quality and maybe because being a German my language capability is limited, compared to someone born in the USA. Subtitles in English would be fantastic already. I am really touched by your work in this regard, throwing some light on Chögyam Trungpa and his unique way of bringing Buddhism to the West. Trungpa was an outstanding teacher, which was able to explain the essence of Vajrayana teaching in a way that it became accessible to his students. Before I only read his book “Spiritual Materialism”. I was hearing my teacher Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche talking very highly about Chögyam Trungpa, but I never had a chance to see or hear or hear a talk from Trungpa. There are many similarities between both teachers. I am very grateful for now being able to understand Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche much better. Please feel encouraged to continue your work. Thank you very much! Bernhard

Trungpa set a bad example. The Dalai Lama said he did not behave appropriately for a rinpoche.
