Jeep and RAM dealerships are in Big Trouble. It's been a rough 6 months for the Jeep and RAM brands in 2023.... Over 81,00 Jeep Grand Cherokees and RAM Trucks were recalled due to engine failure. Dealership lots are stacked with Gladiators, Wranglers and RAM trucks that are just not selling. And the Jeep Renegade has one of the longest days supply of inventory in the entire country, I'm a huge fan of the Jeep brand and over the years I've owned several JK wranglers While I'm excited to see what the future holds for Stellantis, the direction I see Jeep being taken has me a little bit concerned.

Another issue is that during Covid, it was hard to even get inventory. This caused dealers to JACK prices way up and screw over customers. The banks likewise wrote insane contracts on both new and used vehicles for way over ACV and buried customers in debt in a depreciating asset and they CANT get out without default/repo. Customers are pissed at dealers for price gouging on top of the insane prices AND interest rates. Dealers WILL go out of business for this

You mention "price gouging" and "insane prices". If we (Americans) weren't so stupid the way we are willing to spend money on garbage that we don't need it never would have happened that way. I'm driving a 2000 GMC pickup and I'll keep driving it until it goes to the junkyard. It's paid for, taxes are cheap and it's been extremely reliable. I know a lot of guys that drive twenty year old GM trucks that are in great shape.

While I agree there was insane price gouging, in the end these people agreed to pay those prices and signed up for it. They get no sympathy from me. If you were in dire need of a vehicle, there was still no reason to go out and pay new vehicle prices for 5 year old vehicles. This was self induced by the buyers, if nobody paid was willing to pay those jacked up prices then the dealerships would've had to lower their prices back to reasonable. During COVID I bought my wife a 99 Silverado Z71 with 170k miles for $2500. And it runs great. But even if it didn't, at that price I could've had the engine rebuilt, new trans, and replace just about everything on it just throwing money at it, and still not come close to the price these dealers were asking for something that was newer, less rust, but just as many miles and in some cases not running nearly as well.

Unfortunately people are stupid and will pay it..... It drives me crazy, if people would just walk away they'd have to lower prices but everyone has the attitude, "Well I guess that's what it costs now". To be fair what is your home's estimated value now? Its not just cars. The world changed. Big mac combo just cost me $12. That used to be a $6-7 meal. I own a small electronics company and most of our component costs went up 30% +. Shipping those parts went up. Tarrifs went up. Just because some availability is starting to return doesnt bring those costs back down. I doubt we will ever see the pricing come back to pre 2020 levels. Great content. I've been to four dealerships in the last week. Jeep/Dodge, Buick/GMC, VW, Toyota. Out of those, Toyota is the only one actually selling (and selling well from what I could see). No customers to be found at the others during normal hours of operation. None. And the Jeep/Dodge and VW dealership were way under staffed. The Jeep/Dodge dealership is one of only two in the metro. I parked at the building, walked in, couldn't find anyone, walked out, wandered the lot for 20 minutes and left. Went back a few days later and found exactly one salesman on staff. One. Coincidentally, at the Toyota dealership, the salesman who was taking me to test drive mentioned, unprompted, that it was his first day at the dealership, as he had just left his sales job at a Dodge dealership because of the lack of customers and not support for staff. The Buick dealership had maybe 4-5 salesmen just hanging out and I'd suspect the one who approached me and gave me the test drive was the sales manager based on his office, age, dress, etc. Surprisingly, neither the Buick or the Jeep salesmen seemed eager to get me back inside despite the full lots, the incoming stock, or the lack of customers, but I had expressed considerable disinterest after test driving. The VW dealership had only one salesman and one sales manager on staff and they seemed absolutely desperate to get my info and keep me around. I test drove a Taos and absolutely loved it. They said they had tons of incentives, but didn't want to give me a price until I gave them my info, which wasn't going to happen. After I left and did my research on the Taos, it seemed like I dodged a bullet. Reddit and Edmunds are full of horror stories, and Consumer Reports gave it a very poor rating. In the end, decided to wait. Not in a hurry to get anything.

My last two vehicles were a Jeep Wrangler Sport and a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. With the Rubicon approaching 7 years old ,I wanted to replace it. Being in the environmental field, I need a 4x4 to get to some sites. Jeep's decision to raise prices sent me in another direction. To get a new Rubicon, modestly equipped like mine was, would mean I would go from $42K 7 years ago, to $58K today. Along with that sticker shock came the unfortunate engine choice when paired to an auto transmission... either a turbo 4 or an E-torque V6. I wasn't having any of it. I went with a 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road for $43K. Not only was the price and equipment a deciding factor, but the Jeep dealership here has absolutely the worst service department. So Jeep pushed me away from Jeep.

For instance, my 2012 JK broke a locker from wheeling that was fixed without any fight. In comparison, my 2021 JL’s rock rails flexed into the lower body panels causing damage. Clearly a parts failure as noted by the dealer. Jeep denied warranty by claiming outside influence and told me the rubicon was meant for light off-roading. I’m still amazed at the response I got.

If you’re buying a +$50k for any truck/suv/minivan then I imagine your monthly payments are at $750-1,200 plus full coverage insurance… unless your down payment was bigger. If you already have other major bills like mortgage, utilities and a family to raise then you live to pay the vehicle off. All manufacturers and their dealers made the mistake of believing that people would just continue extending themselves financially in order to purchase what they want, as opposed to what they can afford. We began to see this upwards creep as your typical car loan, which used to be no more than three years, went to four, five, six, and finally seven. What they did not anticipate was the double whammy of high inflation for all consumer goods, along with out of control interest rates that have pushed many of us out of the new car market entirely. They're all going to be taking it where the sun doesn't shine very soon, and I expect many dealerships to go bankrupt.

Last year (Jan) I was looking at getting a Rubicon Gladiator here in Canada (Toronto area). Unfortunately the pricing was just too far out of my reach, especially if I considered the diesel version. I ended up stepping back my realistic use for off-road in a given year and expanded some of the other vehicles I looked it. Ford Bronco Badlands was just as expensive, so that was out which ended with me landing on a Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road. Compared to the Gladiator I originally wanted, I ended up paying almost $23K less, plus saving a few more dollars on the balance of my load to finance. I did have to wait 6 months for the 4Runner, but have enjoyed it now that I have it a year as of Jul 27th. Funny thing is, a few months after initially shopping around, the Jeep sales reps were heavily discounting the Jeeps I was considering but told them I was waiting for my 4Runner which was still much cheaper than they were offering.

My local CDJR dealer has 86 Wrangler 4xe and 14 standard Wranglers in inventory, but oddly only 7 Gladiators. While some are in transit that's a ton of Wranglers. Lease deals are pretty good because leasing doesn't phase out the federal tax incentive based on income. They've also decontented the Wranglers compared to the '23s, or forced you into more expensive options. For example the '23 Sahara had black or saddle leather, now leather is optional and no saddle available. The black 3-piece hardtop is also no longer available.

She’ll be in that much. It was already five years old. My factory warranty was almost up. So I had to buy into a warranty. So I asked the sales rep are people really buying cars with high miles without the warranty and he said yes people are risktakers. I was like WTF! Also, I didn’t want to buy a (new car). The only time I bought a new Rubicon was 2006. I worked for Cummins, so I got a 10% factory discount. 28k pre-discounted, & fully loaded. I've owned 7 Wranglers, & 4 were Rubi's. I buy at low miles 8-40k, to avoid instant 5-10k depreciation & initial sticker shock. I then build them up & pass on, to keep my hobby peaked. It's hard to imagine the regular Rubi cost 3x more, in only 17 years.. I want a '24 in 392, with the 12" screen & trail routes embedded, but as mentioned, will have to wait until '26 to get the right price. :( (65-70k)

With the amount of free taxpayer money through PPE 'loans' these dealerships received, they can play this game for 20 more years.

I can only imagine what that lot is paying in depreciation on everything sitting.

That tells me that the banks loaning the money to the dealerships for inventory are the real winners, with the customer footing the bill. It may be getting to the point if you want a vehicle, you may have to order it instead of off the lot.

Given the greed and craziness of the manufacturers AND the dealers, is there any chance the market will ever be “normal” again - where we can just get a $25K to $35K vehicle? It really seems like dealers and manufacturers are trying to train us to expect $80K to be the norm. That is not doable for most of middle class!

There's a dealership across the road from me with literally hundreds of white Ram vans, Chrysler minivans and Ram trucks, most are the full sized cargo cans. It looks like they are for fleet sales but months go by and they're not moving.

It's wild how expensive these are, when you compare them to a pickup, they seem almost like a luxury item more so than a good purchase for a daily driver. Especially with their poor reliability with the newer models

I was actually contemplating trading my 16 JK Rubicon on a Gladiator early on. Until I test drove one about a year and a half ago. I knew the new manual transmission was trouble instantly. I don’t know why they swapped from the old jk manual. The new one reminds me of an 80s VW. Featherweight clutch and short throws, feels like a toy. Glad I passed. Between a junk new manual tranny and all the electronic problems with the stop start my days of owning new Jeeps are over. I guess they are wanting to sell power wheels instead.

As interest rates climb, Dealer flooring costs increase. Things get real fast when monthly costs on a $60k Jeep sitting on lot is $$$$ every month😮😢😢😢

Its a matter of when gasoline hits 5-7$/gal people will change their buying habits to small pickup trucks like the maverick or small economy cars while full size SUV's market will crash. And when mainstream media already talking about a recession, people will definitely put off buying large purchases.

Reality check: There will not be a recession this year, the economy is doing great, GDP is up to 2.4%, jobs are up every month, inflation is down to 3%, unemployment is at near record lows, and wages are up. So anyone talking recession is a total liar, and a fool, they are lying to the people. The Fed even put out a statement saying they do not see a recession happening this year, that was about 2 weeks ago, google it. Only lying Republicans are saying we might have a recession, for political reasons, to make it look like the economy is not doing great, it's all lies to try and help Trump beat Biden in the next election, do not fall for it.

A 2023 Jeep PHEV Rubicon here in Switzerland is over 100k CHF (=114k USD)(list price) new. And not many occasions to use it actually (most "offroad roads" are off limit by law anyway). I'd like to buy one, but this price tag is outrageous!
