+Tengu Siv what i saw online the fastest speeds came from 2133-2666 mhz on ddr4.. so most likely something like the Kingston hyperX Predator @2400 mhz CL 12 will be around the sweetspot of clockspeed and latency.. at least afaik..

+Tom Is a Door if the timing is 9 for example the ram will take 9 cycles to get the data you need so if your ram is 1800mhz as example it'll take 9/1800000000 = 5 nanosecond which is very neglictible for most pc users hope i explained it well ..

Vaaas Yes, but there's four numbers (eg. "9-9-9-27"). What does each number mean?
@ujiltromm7358
@ujiltromm7358 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Is a Door I just took a quick glance at the wiki page about "Memory Latency", which led me to CAS Latency, which led me to Random-Access Memory Hierarchy, and tbh, there's too much information in there to be put on a single TechQuickie video if you begin to scratch the surface and add technical terms like CAS/CL, Trcd, Tras... that will need to be defined by other technical terms that will need to be defined by other technical terms... The pit is very deep. I believe they went deep enough to not drown themselves. For more information : RAM timing is expressed in a series of numbers (like 8-8-8-24) which each represents a number of clock cycles to complete a specific task associated to RAM manipulation. The absolute latency in nanoseconds is calculated both with these timings, and the actual RAM frequency, which is half of what is usually announced, because marketing likes big numbers and Double Data Rate doubles the speed ! So take a 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 stick (like the ones I have in my rig, which are Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB Low-profile for my SFF rig), understand it's a DDR stick so it's actually a 800MHz stick, then calculate that clock ticks occur once every 1.25ns, so the absolute latency of my RAM for these timings is 8*1.25 = 10, 10, 10 and 24*1.25 = 30, in nanoseconds. So yeah, a DDR3-1600 8-8-8-24 is quite good, but a DDR3-2333 with 9-9-9-27 timings will be better because of the far higher clock speed. It's a result of two variables. Careful though, not every motherboard will support faster RAM !
@TheLibero
@TheLibero 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Lo Nigro (Daniel15) 1st number >> CL: CAS Latency. The time it takes between a command having been sent to the memory and when it begins to reply to it. It is the time it takes between the processor asking for some data from the memory and then returning it. 2nd number >> tRCD: RAS to CAS Delay. The time it takes between the activation of the line (RAS) and the column (CAS) where the data are stored in the matrix. 3rd number >> tRP: RAS Precharge. The time it takes between disabling the access to a line of data and the beginning of the access to another line of data. tRAS: Active to Precharge Delay. How long the memory has to wait until the next access to the memory can be initiated. 4th number >> CMD: Command Rate. The time it takes between the memory chip having been activated and when the first command may be sent to the memory. Sometimes this value is not announced. It usually is T1 (1 clock cycle) or T2 (2 clock cycles). the most important one is the 1st one (latency) .. "copied from website"

Casper What foolish logic. So perhaps we should unlock prison cells and tear down prison walls since prisoners often breakout and escape. Or perhaps we should remove locks from doors since homes are broken into every 24 seconds. This liberal mindset is a danger to America. Since people break the law and disobey, your logic is to eliminate the barriers and laws rather than punish the criminals. Do you not see what foolish and irresponsible reasoning that is? Of course not. Liberals have no ability to reason logically.

Hi, i'm hoping you can give me a simple answer. I'm looking to buy Ram for an i7 pc for editing movies, i don't do gaming. 2 brands do 16GB (1x 16GB) 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, one has Latency 15 , the other has latency 17, I've watched many YT vids that talk about frequency, overclocking blah blah but i still don't get whether i want the 15 or 17, ? i will be going for the recommended better quality brand but would like to know if imagine they were exactly the same quality should i buy 15 or 17

Digital Foundry (partially) disproved this. In CPU bound scenarios in gaming, faster RAM can definitely increase your minimums. Not an excuse to buy the most expensive stuff out there, but springing for a tier or 2 higher could be worth it depending on price.
@MrMleczkp
@MrMleczkp 8 жыл бұрын
+DrearierSpider1 the problem with that is you need oc board to use faster than standard ram. And costs are just rising 2x as much for board a little more for ram and if you have z board already then it would be shame to not buy k processor then additional cooler.... That's how i come to conclusion, screw that, and bought i7 6700 (none k) h110 board and 16gb of standard 2133mhz 14cl memory for my gaming pc.

Memory speeds advertised as part of an XMP profile might not be achievable on AMD-based motherboards. XMP is a sort of automatic memory overclocking setting that was designed for Intel motherboards. Some motherboard makers offer BIOS settings to help you achieve these faster speeds on AMD motherboards. But these settings aren’t present on all boards, and they don’t always work when they are present.

Question. Would a separate 'gpu' slot on the motherboard, using slots on the motherboard for vram be an alternative to current full video cards? Seeing people are nowadays trying to make pc rigs smaller and smaller, plus having the option to both change vram and gpu separately, I would think it would both lower production cost and increase modularity of a pc. Honestly, I don't have enough hardware knowledge concerning the video card to know if this would even be possible. It's why I'm asking

+Shangori It's technically possible, although it would be better if the memory slots were on the Video card. As a matter of fact, i'm pretty sure it's been done in the past, with Sound cards at least. On the other hand, HBM is just around the corner, and 8GB VRAM should last you for at least 4 years from now. Not sure about the future of 4GB cards, seeing how the memory can get choked even in 1080p.

I have a 2018 13" MBP 8/256 right now (first laptop in 10 years). General use for me would be Safari with 10 tabs, Spotify, gmail, Word document, iMessage, FaceTime. I may get in to editing photos down the line but have never used Photoshop or Lightroom or anything like that and don't plan to really learn them. I also don't make videos. I am a general artist (photography, drawing, guitar/singing/songwriting, woodworking) so I may dabble with some artsy apps later, but none too serious. However, the one I definitely plan on using most is Garage Band or possibly even Logic Pro X. I also plan to own my computer for 5 years. There's also always a possibility I may delve in to RAM hungry apps in the future and I'm not sure what apps may grown in RAM use down the line after updates etc... I'm struggling with whether to upgrade to 16 RAM. Do you think it's worth it in my situation?

wanted to mention that some games do benefit from faster ram, where other components are not the bottleneck. there was actually an interesting article put out regarding how memory speed actually had a direct effect on the minimum fps for Fallout 4, again, where the ram itself was the only bottleneck (they were using haswell-e and a titan X for benching) Another way faster memory can benefit SOME games, like Skyrim or Fallout, is by using 3rd party software (such as ENBoost) that forces a portion of the system memory to be used as a pre-cache/overflow for the VRAM

When buying ram, what's the designation of c15 or c16 mean? The speeds are listed as identical.

OK I got a question. I have a laptop that is a few years old. I'm planning on upgrading it with an SSD to get a bit more use out of it and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading the RAM as well. Here are the specs: Lenovo G580 i5-3230M @ 2.6 GHz Nvidia GT 635m 2GB (2GB is total overkill for this card btw) 8GB DDR3 @ 800MHz 1366x768 resolution screen I have't found myself running out of ram even when playing some games. I'm wondering if getting faster RAM will have any noticeable impact to performance? Intel's website says the processor supports 1333 and 1600.

i think the only one thing u realy need for this laptop, is a cheap ssd, more or faster ram for an a bit older dualcore i5 would not help you outand is a waste of money, the 635m will keep you always back and is for sure in 99% of the case the bottleneck english skillz over 9000 :D

That's what I think too. It's an old machine and it wasn't top of the line when I got it either. But it's still capable enough and I think the crappy 5400rpm hdd is slowing it down quite a bit. It's not my primary gaming machine anymore thankfully :D Thanks for your answer!

A couple of questions, my mother board supports 1600 RAM and I slapped in 1333, it works, but would either broke on the long term? Secondly, even if Linus said that there's little difference in raw speed, would my old 1333 RAM be enough to handle the more modern games? Am running i5 and 970.

I dont understand about dual channel memory. Does that mean its more efficient to run 2 x 16GB ram modules for a full 32GB of ram or use 4 x 8GB ram modules for a full 32GB of ram?

Hi i have 4x 8Gb 1866mhz cl10 kit hyperx and a gigabyte 990fxa-ud5 mobo Fb bios as Fc is invalid image!!!! and a fx8350 and i'm having real trouble with setting the speeds up for memory it seems to default to 1600mhz and no xmp or anything in bios if i set multiplier to 9.33 as stated for 1866mhz it don't boot but the bios goes to 10 for memory multiplier. so i have to increase FSB speed to 230Mhz to get 1810mhz memory speed. ANY info is appreciated.

+ try looking for the lowest latency over highest frequency. For example, a stick of ram with a clockspeed of 2666Mhz and a latency of 13Cas will give you pretty much the same performance as ram clocked at 3333MHZ with a latency of 16Cas but for a lot less money.
