Islam gave womanhood property and divorce rights 1400 years ago before our beautiful England of love gave women property rights. Islam taught people that they cannot kill disobedient children as was customary in olden times nor, can a Muslim do genocide on any land-if they did, they were not following Quran-nor can they kill random civilians or destroy trees or houses of worship of other cousin Faiths during wars -as some people do in our world. Wali, in the Arabic language, has a wide set of meanings, none of which are used to simply mean “buddy, pal or acquaintance”, the way that we would use the term “friend” in modern times to denote our casual relationships with colleagues at work, peers at school or neighbors. In an everyday reading of the Qur’an, after reading this question initially, I came across the word wali and its various derivatives multiple times; sometimes it meant “guardian”, other times, “discharger of affairs or executor”, or “protector and ally”, and even “inheritor”. “Friendship” can be included in this, but walaa’ is a type of intimate and extremely loyal bond that is not used for everyday friendships in Arabic Saheeh International Al-Qur’an (5:51): O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.
