Ramayana - Kaikeyi an Evil Queen or A Saint? Lord Rama's Exile
Manthara, a family servant of Kaikeyi, lived with her since her birth. When she heard that King Dasharatha was planning to crown his eldest son, Rama as the King, she flew into a fit of rage and reported the news to Kaikeyi. Kaikeyi, was initially pleased but when provoked became furious.
Manthara reminded Kaikeyi of the two boons Dasharatha gave her when she once saved his life in a celestial battle. Kaikeyi kept these boons for later and Manthara declared that this was the right time to ask. She adviced Kaikeyi to lie in her room, shabbily dressed with no ornaments, pretending to be angry. When Dasharatha came to console her, she immediately asked for the boons. The first boon was Bharata to be made the king. The second boon was Rama be exiled into the forest for fourteen years. Manthara thought fourteen-year exile would be long enough for Bharata to consolidate his position in the Empire and pave his way into people's hearts.

This is an eye opener.. Everyone feels what kaikeyi did was evil and she is always being blamed and thought of as a cruel and selfish person. But that's not the truth!!! She was only playing her part to support the leela of her prabhu Shri Ram. Such a big devotee she was!!

i have an another opinion though..am a student in Hinduism,and my personal view is that..being a queen,KAIKEYI listened to the gossips of a maid..its true that without that Banwas of Lord Rama,never would we have learnt about Shri Hanuman and all the good things that follows,..but..but,with all due respect, a Queen taking lesson from a maid..though during Lord Rama's era,it was a blessing in disguise,but nowadays,i think we must socialise with people with even or higher status than ourself.

Manthara was like a mother to Kaikeyi. After Kekaya(Kaikeyi's mother) was banished. Manthara took care of her and Kaikeyi developed a motherly bond with Manthara.

During God's descension, he comes with his eternal associates to help in his leelas. Those associates are selfless devotees who perform their acts according to the wish of the God. Kaikeyi played a negative role not according to her wish but the desire of Lord Ram. Had she not asked for those two boons, then the Ramayan would have been incomplete. Between the time Lord Ram left for the exile and retuning to Ayodha, so many past times happened like killing various demons, meeting the saints who were eagerly waiting for him since eons, meeting Hamumanji, leaving for Lanka, killing Ravana and brining mother Sita back with him. These incidents are full of bliss which help us to engage our mind in divine past times. So the leela of God and Saints are beyond our material intellect. We should accept them and derive the bliss instead of thinking why incidents like these happened.

Queen Kaikeyi was an excellent lady ,who helped Lord Ram to kill the demons including Ravana. She had an extraordinary love for Lord Rama. Kaikeyi repented for sending her most beloved son away for 14 years. So she was not an evil queen.
