Years ago l watched a documentary about the original ice road truckers. The gentleman that was in charge said -40 isn't bad. -50 is cold. -60 is damn cold.

NOT a Chevy 327. Predates the SBC 327 by many years.

The AMC 327 is a real lump. Heavy as hell. Deep skirt block. The 2 barrel and 4 barrel are different castings. There is somebody in California that is boring and stroking one to around 430 inches. The bores have a .125" overbore allowance.

430 ci would be good, since it weighs nearly what a 430 Lincoln does.

At any age, check the timing gears, those engines have nylon coating on the cam gear, and those teeth will strip off, when brittle with age and heat cycling. You may find pieces of gear in the oil pan. Also, if you pull the rocker shafts off, make sure that the two hollow bolts, go in the back holes on each side. Those bolts carry the oil to the rocker arms. Seen shops unfamiliar with these engines, mix them up, and what a racket they make, while destroying the shafts.

@@ramblerdave1339 The plastic (1) coated tining gears are meant for one thing. Noise reduction. 1) Plastic is something of a misnomer. People hear plastic and they think the low grade plastics used in ejection molded consumer products. These are plastics are specially formulated for wear resistance etc.
