Rameau's idea to make maddness a character is really great; but to also have her direct the orchestra is just ingenious. Marc Minkowski's recording of this work is superb. All you have to do is imagine the surreal excesses of baroque costumes it was originally performed in. A daring work even for today's standards.

William Keckler agreed. The spotlight seems to be on Lully for much of this specific period and many performances. I believe, myself, that Rameau is pure French baroque perfection. Cheers !

It's funny because Rameau's music have been considered to be too Italian while it is Lully who is actually an Italian, while Rameau is 100% french...

Louis Nicholas Lully was 14 when he moved to Italy, or even younger. He got most of his musical education in France.

When I was in music school I don't think I heard a note of Rameau - all of French Baroque - actually. Baroque was German - all those fugues to analyze. So much of this music is charming and lively. Been binging on it of late.

This is definitely Rameau's best aria, Minkowski is the greatest conductor who ever lived and Mireille Delunsch does such a magnificent job (the acting, the singing, her timing and sence of humor - everything is perfect) that I cannot help it but consider this one of the most amazing videos I have ever seen.

As much as I love this opera and this interpretation is absolutely delightful, I wouldn't say the best. Just listen to Rameau's "Peaceful Forests" from his opera "Les Indes Galantes" conducted by William Christie (Les Arts Florissants), a stupendous masterpiece. To me the best interpretation to this day.
