If a tree falls in the forest it does indeed make a sound due to the physical vibration of the air which can be recorded on a tape recorder. However, if we define the event as a conscious experience, the falling tree does not make a sound if no human is present. But any number of living things, such as a dog, cat, monkey, deer, etc., which has auditory receptors do experience the sound, and the event could also be experienced in other ways other than hearing, such as a vibration of the ground, an accompanying burst of air (wind) or simply the sight of the event. If you are not at home to hear a tree falls and the tree falls on your home in the forest and damages or destroys it, most conscious humans would conclude that a tree fell in the forest without the need for any additional historical account or certification of consciousness.

Despite trying very hard to be the “well, technically” guy, you spent so much effort trying to quibble about the definition of a word (that you could have just googled) that you missed the entire point. Alan Watts is one of the most intelligent and articulate people who has ever lived. He knew the definition of the word “sound”. Sound is not simply vibrations propagating through a medium. Imagine if we described every propagated vibration as a “sound”. Earthquakes would be called sounds. The shaking of your body as you travel a bumpy road would be a sound. It’s weird and unhelpful to talk that way. Sound is not a vibration - that’s just part of the definition. It’s also the subjective experience of that vibration. That’s the point. Also, Alan never said the experience was limited to humans… he surely didn’t expect animals in his audience, and saw no need to explicitly define “an observer”.
