This. The whole video is great, but I *especially* appreciate Ramit's assessment of the 4th guy (20:33). Really highlights the difference between the way Ramit operates - respecting his audience and trying to help them- vs this other, way too common approach, where you just try to get people angry, embarrassed, and vengeful so they'll be amped up enough to buy whatever bullsh*t you're saying without thinking about it. My parents had this older gentleman that passed away next door to a property. in the neighbor's will, they wanted to offer the property for sale to my parents first before anyone else. His son went to a realtor and told my parents that they were getting offers of $150k for the property so that's the market price. My dad was ready to pay, but my mom is quite knowledgeable about properties so she said there's no way it was worth that much. She went to the public assessment records and checked that the property public records indicated the property was only worth I think 40-60k. Then they went back to the son and realtor and presented the evidence that it was nowhere near 150k and if someone else wanted to buy it they could. Then a few weeks later, they came back and cut a deal with my parents for 60k on the property.

If it was a bad video I assumed it would be to buy IULs or pitching a Real Estate course, "Just get CDs" was not on my list of possible bad advice... that's a new one. And then to get it wrong and be like these are great for emergency funds? I mean, no penalty CDs are good for emergency funds but a no penalty CD is really just a HYSA in disguise. Also for like "we are going to buy a house in 3 years" it could also make sense to use a CD. Me personally, I would just put that in a MM or HYSA and keep it liquid in case of an extended lob loss or something.

I really appreciate your channel Ramit. My family is a high income family. We earn over 300k a year but we're spending less than a third of that and putting everything else into savings and investments (which after taxes is around 50% of our pretax earnings). Probably no surprise but we both grew up in lower income families. My dad lost his job when I was a kid and my partner's dad passed away. So we're very fearful of an unexpected life event that could complete upend our lives. So many channels miss the psychological aspect of money. The good thing is that we have a house that's paid off and are well set up for retirement. Your channel has made me realize that we could be enjoying life so much more now and we're going way overboard for retirement savings even if we retire early at 55. It's going to take a big mindset shift but the first step was realizing that we're okay and can spend more now.

I think CDs are only useful in a very limited set of scenarios. You can use them if you have a scheduled, relatively large expense or purchase that you have to put money aside for that has not already been invested. For example, if you are intending to buy a car in a year and you want to put aside 10k specifically for that purchase, a 12 month CD can work. The issue is that CDs typically don't give you much more than a high interest savings account so the return you get for locking away your money is pretty minimal.

Very informative! Also, I 100% agreed, with your take on Grant Cardone. I wouldn’t trade my moral values for his either.

Manufacturer websites are golden. Spec out the car you want, know the price, walk into the dealership with a printout of the car you want and the price you're expecting to pay. Ask for what's in stock that's similar, test drive only what's in your budget, it's easy for the dealership to give a misimpression of what features are similar to the one you actually are getting.

That first one is pretty much how Dad bought farm equipment. He'd tell the dealers what he wanted, said he was serious about buying, and asked for their best offer. Best deal (not necessarily the lowest price) got his business. A lot of surprised salesmen spent considerably more time putting together an offer the 2nd time. When Dad called them back to say he wasn't taking their offer as he had a better deal elsewhere and they tried to negotiate Dad just said "what part of 'your best offer' didn't you understand", and hung up.

Whenever we went to buy my wife's car, we split the shopping experience into 2 parts: exploration, then research and purchase. In part one, we just went to several different dealerships, in fact some of them were extremely overpriced. She got a chance to test-drive several cars, figure out the brand and model she wanted, so she is happy with it. For part 2, I told her that I will find her the car at a good price. I went through and ran all the numbers on trade-in, any add-ons, etc. Then I start calling and emailing dealers in our area to see what they had and at what price. It took couple week, but we found her the exact car she wanted at a reasonable price and we were even able to get extra couple grand on her trade-in.

Agree. Telling people to never test drive a vehicle is crazy.

Here’s the thing about cars: go and test drive and don’t buy. I found out so many great features about cars that was not available online. Then it helped me figure out what car I wanted. I also met people who had the same car as me that didn’t know about great features. You just have to have a friend with you and willpower. Even go with a friend with them saying they’re looking for the car.

I bought a new car for cash. I looked up what I wanted online, decided what options I wanted (none) and gave myself a pep talk about not getting talked into the expensive extras and bad warranties. Then I emailed a bunch of dealers for quotes and went with the cheapest one. When I walked into the dealership, I got the car I wanted at MSRP (they tried to add all types of etching, rim protection, window licking fees but I just said no). Then once we signed the papers they pulled out the finance application and I told them cash. I don’t think they liked me very much.

Agreed about the car buying experience. I bought a car in 2019 and would only do business with the dealerships that were willing to give quotes online or over the phone. If they told me I had to come in person to get a quote, thank you next. I got multiple quotes and used them to negotiate a lower price from a dealership near me. I'm still happy with the car and continue to take care of it so I hopefully won't need to buy a new one for a very long time.
