Could do aerated concrete (lighter weight) for the roof, or do a vaulted ceiling. Actually, in Texas, you could have a flat roof & BBQ / have a gazebo up there. That wouldn't work where I am in Michigan, haha.
@RedEarthRanch3 жыл бұрын
It's funny you say that because we are looking at doing exactly that on the roof of the garage. I'm trying to find if Aircrete would work but having trouble finding data on strengths and span load ratings. On the flat roof we plan to put 12 inches of soil and grow local grasses up there.

@@RedEarthRanch Was wading though some material online to see if I could find out for you, but didn't run into many hard #s. A lot of the sites mentioned requiring an engineer, but perhaps if there are some building codes out there that might shed light on the strength requirements (since they're already approved by an engineer)?

Awesome work. I keep circling back to rammed earth every six months or so and just found you and your project. You do great work! In your experience so far, how quickly can you put up your walls? Like how many square feet of wall a day on average can you get done? I have a lot of experience with concrete forming using symons style forms and have done quite a bit of flatwork. Just curious what the real-world production figures look like. Thanks and keep up the awesome content!
@RedEarthRanch3 жыл бұрын
If you have experience with concrete the learning curve is VERY shallow. With just the two of us we can get about 150 sq/ft (about 14 sq/m) done in about 5 days. That's 2 days of formwork and 3 days of ramming. With a crew of 4-5 we can cut that time in half, and if you had an experienced crew and enough forms you could probably triple or quadruple that production speed. A lot of it depends on your equipment and crew. We are going much slower because there is only 2 of us and we are learning as we go, however as we gain experience things are speeding up. Hope that helps

Not yet we won't be doing any "in wall" electrical on the garage or workshop. Unfortunately we won't be able to show that until we get to the main house. But maybe we will have to show a demo for you

Great stuff. Lovely colors. Mind sharing your mix components and mix ratios?
@RedEarthRanch3 жыл бұрын
3 parts sand to 1 part 3/8 gravel and 9-10% portland cement, then 2-6% of the cement for color. That mix design is for our material though, I would highly recommend getting a mix design done to ensure you have good strength with whatever materials you are planning on using.

Ibeam to span roof might be a soultion to span the roof instead of a post .
@RedEarthRanch3 жыл бұрын
We looked at that but I-Beams are pretty expensive and I had a hard time finding them in 30' spans that would support the amount of weight of the living roof.

I just subbed. I've always wanted to do this type of build. How would one look into a plot of land to source the materials from the land itself. Thank you for posting these videos. Also can you tell me percentages of concrete, sand & clay you are using?
@RedEarthRanch3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Danny! We looked at sourcing the material from the land itself. We actually have a lot of good material on our land, however to rent or purchase the equipment necessary to clean that material was cost prohibitive for us. You want to get very specific materials to get the strength that we are seeing (about 4000 psi). So we found a local quarry and purchased the material from them. We are using 3 parts sand to 1 part aggregate (3/8 gravel) 9-10% portland cement. However that mixture is for the specific material in our area. I would recommend getting a good mix design to get good strength.

Which county is it? How is experience in getting the approval for the plan? How long it took to get the approval? Do you have to pay an architect for this? I subscribed to follow your progress. Planning to do in AZ. Will have to check the building code restrictions there.

USA we are outside city limits so no permit or plan approval needed We did have an architect help us with the initial layout and design of the house AZ is a great place to do rammed earth. If you are anywhere near Phoenix I would talk to SIREWALL USA about helping with all the questions
