I think this video (similar to the one they did for "Amerika") has anti-colonialist, anti-globalist messages. But it's interesting to note that they also have pro-immigration songs like "Mein Land" which portrays hostility toward foreigners in a negative light. So.. I think altogether their message is, that we should meet each other and share cultures, without taking advantage of hospitality or treating guests poorly. Great reaction, Rammstein has a fun side to them sometimes. :) Their "Zick Zack" video has a bit of this as well.

In his book, Flake tells us that the group may not be the noblest, but they are the funniest. They show that here once again. 😊

Making a satire out of it is the only way to deal with racism. it was the motif of the refugee boat that framed the music video. Because it starts with Rammstein arriving on an island in a rubber dinghy and it ends with all the band members leaving the island on the rubber dinghy, with the exception of Flake, who is first forgotten and then held back. Which is a lot of cliché, fits damn well with the lyrics of the song and the associated meta level. Because: On a lyrical level, the song is clear. It's about globality instead of nationality. About the German cosmopolitan traveling abroad. About the German globetrotter as an enemy. About someone who wants to impress the ladies in foreign countries with pseudo-worldly gibberish. This is exactly what they wanted to emphasize by using authentic materials on both sides, as explained further in the making-of video. For example, Flake's (historical) silk suit still said "Deutsch-Südwest-Afrika", a German colony in what is now Namibia. Arriving on the island, the white colonialists give Rammstein to a tribe of black natives. And they don't leave out any clichés. germany colonies in africa The German colonial empire included parts of today's People's Republic of China, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Namibia, Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Chad, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Papua New Guinea, and several islands in the western Pacific and Micronesia

No, we weren't England. Our colonies were present-day Namibia and Tanzania. I still think a little bit of Togo. China was a city, I think it was spelled Tsingtao. Then there is the Bismarck Archipelago. Zanzibar was exchanged for Heligoland. It was. So always keep the ball flat when you don't know anything. We weren't England and France. Incidentally, Germany was not involved in the slave trade. Better look at your country.

Again, I love your reaction! I would tend to call it almost refreshingly innocent. This is of course just natural: you don’t speak German, and there is no way you could have known about all the controversy around Rammstein within Germany. Outside of Germany, Rammstein has never faced that kind of criticism, they are solely judged on their music and their live performances, which are both very unique and outstanding.

What controversy are you talking about? Maybe that their live performances are too dangerous?

They used cinematic material from the Nazi propaganda movie “Olympia” by Leni Riefenstahl as their video for the Depeche Mode cover of “Stripped”. That alongside other references to Nazi Germany (like the distinct pronunciation of the language) made many question their political views.

@@violindylan Okay, using the Riefenstahl-footage was not that clever. But what the hell has Tills' way of pronounciation to do with Nazi Germany? I can absolutely not get it. What other references are you talking about. List them here, please.

You haven't shown any other videos or live performances from Rammstein. I suspect you haven't really noticed the hidden messages from Rammstein. Rammstein likes to provoke, there are always small details hidden in the lyrics, videos and also live performance. In order to understand Rammstein, it takes a lot of work. You have to analyze the "videos", which are better than many films, carefully and watch them several times. Many words have a double meaning. Germans also watch the videos several times and listen to the lyrics several times to understand what they really mean. I would love to see more analysis from you about Rammstein. Examples: "Du hast", live in Paris. "Ich tu dir weh", live from Madison Square Garden Best reguards from Germany

It is German! Rammstein is a German band, and they are actually very controversial in Germany for a number of reasons. First of all, when the band formed in 1994, they named themselves after a small city in the iwest of Germany where until the present day a US airbase is stationed. It became internationally famous in 1988 for the most tragic reason, when during a public and very popular air show three Jets of the Italian military collided during a flight maneuver, causing one of the jets to crash directly into the crowd. 70 people lost their lives, more than 1000 were injured. Secondly, they have always played with their image, especially regarding what their political views are, leaving room for discussion whether they are based on the ideas of the far left punk movement in former East Germany (GDR), or if they were in fact neonazis. There has even a book been published on the matter, in which the author collects evidence for where they stand politically, concluding that it is most definitely left ideology they are promoting. One of the things that makes Germans suspicious and even appalled sometime, is the way how the lead singer pronounces the letter “r”. By rolling it at the tip of the tongue, plus using a nasal tone when speaking /Singing. It resembles the voice of Adolf Hitler, making Germans suspicious and at times even super uncomfortable listening to Rammstein lyrics . However, even if you don’t trust a book, I think it is pretty safe to say that Rammstein are not neonazis, as their actions speak a very different language. For example, in 2019, two (straight) band members kissed on stage during a concert in Moscow, in order to protest against the suppression of the LGBT community in Russia.

U have a problem. Who cares about that. Rammstein is the greatest band on earth for many fans, who fully understand their texts and art production. The views of superior implying medias like Spiegel, Stern etc who think to have to teach Germans what to believe and what to say are not a concern for international viewers.

They are actually a product of the GDR punk underground scene. They have all been in punk bands previously the most known one is Feeling B the band in which they had Flake, Paul Landers and Schneider. But Till also did start as a drummer for a punk band. The rolling of the R’s comes from old school high German he uses as a poet. His father used to be a poet and classic literature teacher. Nothing to do with neonazis.

Controversial in Germany? I thought the Germans were much more open-minded , clever and not that stupid. Someone must be obviusly an idiot calling this band Nazis just because of the way the singer sings. Rammstein are a damn great intelligent rock band, that's all they are. I wish there were more like them today.
