The part you missed is at 3:03 he puts it back to a snare. Basically some time before 2:37 he dropped the snare spring and used it as a tom, which it sounds pretty good admittedly... Then at 3:03 you can see him re-raise the snare spring and go back to playing it like a snare. Pretty slick stuff!!!
