A beautiful drive and a five mile hike to a plane crash make this a perfect single day adventure.
In 1952 Captain Sidney Harrison died when his plane crashed into the mountains West of Colorado Springs. You can still find the wreckage of this little-known crash site with a five mile, moderately strenuous hike through the Colorado backcountry.

Why didn't the wreckage get cleared? It's always a sad thing when someone dies. My deepest sympathy for the family and friends.

That's a great question. I think in some cases it may be a cost issue. But in most all that we've been across they've removed the important bits of the aircraft and have left the wreckage as a memorial.

I never knew there was a plane crash there. I lived in florissant and used to atv close to woodland park looking for elk and maybe bf. Be careful in there as there are cats and bears.
