Shaolin Monk destroys MMA Fighters?

Shanghai based MMA coach Ramsey Dewey responds to the thousands of comments claiming that Chinese professional kickboxer Yi Long is both a Shaolin Monk and an MMA fighter. Neither of these things are true. Yi Long is a rare kind of fighter who is also a savvy fight promoter and an expert at turning a simple fight into compelling narrative - he’s monk in the same way as the Iron Sheik from the WWF pro wrestling days was Persian royalty. In short, it’s a gimmick. Why do gimmicks like this work to attract fans to combat sports? Simple: without the narrative structure of a story behind the fight, to the common man, it’s just incomprehensible chaos in a ring.
Yi Long was kind enough to stop by for an interview. Check out the full podcast here:
• Yi Long: Ramsey Dewey ...
In this interview, Yi Long shares some incredibly wise words for traditional martial artists who want to compete in modern combat sports like he did:
• Yi Long: Kungfu in Mod...

I trained at a shaolin temple and went undefeated as an MMA fighter. Then I was recruited by the army for top secret assassination missions. I then went into a secret underground fighting tournament in china and won undefeated. It was the best video game ive ever played.

and a very smart strategy. I think if I were a UFC or Bellator pro, I would be "caught" practicing some obscure martial art like wing chun or aikido when the film crew wanted to come to my gym to get some pre-fight footage for the hype machine. I think it'd be a really good way to throw your opponent off if he's thinking that you might be bringing in some weird stuff he's never seen before.
@elenchus
@elenchus 5 жыл бұрын
@Big Lebowski the irony would be that internet nerds would come through dozens of my fights to find evidence that I had actually been doing aikido all along. They'd find like 20 seconds of footage across an 8-year long fighting career that kind of look like aikido moves and declare that aikido works lol

There is an Asian British Ex Monk on KZbin that quit and tells a lot about the Shaolin. He says it is very physical, lots of skills are taught, lots of acrobatics, lots of exercise, lots of endurance tests, study, etc. He mentioned fighting is not their main thing and really never was. The mythology came from the times when the temple did have to defend themselves and they prevailed. Yes they are into Martial Arts but they are not supermen. In fact the guy that quit said the rigors of their training was taking a toll on his body and he was having a hard time keeping up his studies with them. All sounded legit to me.

It is debatable if such a thing as a Shaolin Monk even exists today. A friend of mine visited Shaolin soon after the cultural revolution ended. It was deserted. The Shaolin Monk lineage was completely severed. Sure, some of the martial technique was was being trained outside the temple, especially in Malaysia, Taiwan, HongKong, Singapore, etc.. In the late 80's or 90's the Chinese government took martial artists from around the country and placed them at Shaolin and tried to rebuild the "Shaolin Fighting Monk" tradition, but it is doubtful it is what it was before the cultural revolution destroyed the temple. The direct teaching from master to student was irrevocably severed. I'm sure a few hundred years ago the Shaolin fighting monks knew how to fight. They didn't train to to fight tournaments and win trophies. They trained to defend the temple from armed bandits, irrate warlord's armies, and on at least one occasion the imperial army. If they didn't know how to fight well, they died in battle.
@shaitand69
@shaitand69 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe your definition requires a true scotsman but mine doesn't. Shaolin Warrior monks train for 7+hrs each and every day and lead lives of extreme discipline. They study internal arts (if nothing else this definitely teaches you how to harness the force of your core with more shallow movements, redirect force, and rapidly expand blood oxygen capacity). They undergo a stretching and strength building regimen that would make MMA champs run home crying. And they practice "iron" techniques which microfracture bones over and over increasing their density alongside greatly increasing pain thresholds. Oh yeah and they spend all day studying a range of actual martial techniques which encompass the repetoire of essentially every other art. And every one of them has to be a master athlete BEFORE they train with actual monks instead of in classes for foreigners. Are they ready for war? Maybe not, but if some real Shaolin Warrior Monks started taking MMA/Boxing seriously you might not see superhuman or total dominance without adaptation but you'd certainly see the same thing you see with everything else these monks do... total dominance through absolute discipline, hard work, mastery of every relevant technique and single minded determination. That isn't superhuman, that is being a human to its fullest and it is the very essence of working medititation. Can't get any more Zen than that. *tips hat to the warrior monks*

I have always loved chinese culture and martial arts. They have a huge legacy in many interesting topics. However, I feel some things about China are terribly misunderstood, in part due to the movies, in part due to that fantasy that some people sell for westerners. I think that they feel the need to show they are better than anyone, that no other country could even imitate them and they try to show it every time they can. But, in reality, they should feel very proud about, for example, their sports people, they are without doubt, one of the top Olympics medal winners. Also, they have some great fighters and this is my main point, there's no need to keep the illusion of magic, other than it's quite profitable to some people... Fighters like Wei Rui, Fu Gaofeng and Huo Xiaolong should be national pride. As a Sanda practicioner, I love to watch their fights and learn from them. The effectiveness of Sanda has been demonstrated many times and that's, in part, due to the fact that it's a mixed martial art. Not specifically "Kung Fu techniques applied", like some people say, but just useful techniques, regardless of which style they come from and that's one of the reasons I love Sanda. Anyway, I think it's great when you see a Kung Fu school, could be CLF, Hung Gar, etc, and they have some Sanda classes as well, where they put the traditional techniques to test. I can assure that many things that we see on Taolu are useful and effective and, for me, that's the magic, when we understand the applications and the instricacies of what we are studying. Excuse my long post, this is something I get really passionate about... Saludos desde Chile, enjoy your vacation! 🙏🏻

It is much deeper in all what it represents than most other teachings who are only fysical and superficial. It was a Self defence system against beeing robbed for the first monks who followed and preached the teachings of Gautama the buddha. Thats where all the beauty of its practice lies to me....

I've trained with many elite fighters, and they mostly practice meditation and kung-fu forms, to make themselves generally magical and awesome. When a fight comes they just wing it, because they never actually practiced takedowns, or chokes, or head movement. but its okay, because they remember some buddhist scripture and that gets them through. common sense, people!

Saw Yi-Long Fight Buakaw. The second fight, thought Buakaw threw the fight. But Yi-Long is a very good stand up fighter. His myth of Shaolin Monk was demythified a few years back. There were videos showing him hanging on a rope with his neck that made people thought he trained in Shaolin Temple's secret Neck Hanging technique. I will say this about Shaolin Monks. The true Shaolin Monks are only a few, they live in San Huang Zhai. And it is Hsin-Yi-Ba that they practice. they practice that in everything they do. from farming to walking to eating. They practice constantly to bring their holw body in harmony. Hitting rocks and boards to harden their bodies are shunned upon. They practice healing as well as fighitng. A harmonious balance. But they must always be monks, never leave. and They dedicate their whole lives to learning and benefitting others. If one is to read true Chinese Shoalin history. They'd be surprised at how the martial arts were actually exercises that were used to help them move around after meditating for long periods of time. Through the years, generals that would escape persecution and political criminals would seek shelther. Those were the ones that added the martial aspects of it. But over a thousand years ago, the monks were only known for their staff work. That was documented by a famous Chines General who already stated that a lot of martial arts in general populace were simply exercises and useless in combat. He only named a dozen or little more as being useful and he named what their specialties were, when he mentioned Shaolin Monks, his comment was: Shaolin Style, great at Staff work. What are your thoughts on Shaui Jiao, Mr. Most hated coach? I dabbled in it a litlle bit, thought it could go head to head with Judo...

@@poorkwamoi "that's what I had thought also. But I am not familiar with Shaui Jiao's lineage. Was told it came from Ne Jen (Later on Manchu) and mixed with Mongolian during the Yuan Dynasty." When discussing the historic origins of Eastern martial arts, we have to keep in mind a couple of factors. One is the modern extreme nationalism of this region, where each culture wants to claim ownership of all inventions, art and so on of each other culture. This is a very frequent sticking point in the region. The other factor is that, in ancient times, the situation was somewhat reversed. You really wanted to claim your martial art, or your food, or your political views, what have you, came from China, the most cosmopolitan and influential region of the Eastern world at the time. It'd be like being somewhere in rural Arkansas and telling everyone that your clothes came from Paris or your watch from Switzerland. The reason I so quickly dismiss the claims that judo ultimately descends from Chinese martial arts generally is that the legend, as told by none other than Kano himself, is clearly not historical. Kano writes: "It is said that in the first year of Tenbun, 1532, a sorcerer came unexpectedly to the house of Takenouchi and taught him five methods of seizing a man; he then went off and he could not tell whither he went." There are some issues with this, however. The first, and most obvious, problem is that sorcerers aren't real, so we're already likely to be dealing with mythology here. The second problem is that Japanese wrestling distantly predates 1532. Sumo wrestling, for instance, is at least as old as the Heian period (beginning around AD 800), and, in my view, the Japanese emphasis on grappling has a very plausible transmission over the next 1100ish years into jujutsu and judo. None of that is to say that there wasn't cross-pollination between Chinese and Japanese martial arts, which was almost certainly going on. But the common claim that judo COMES from shuai jiao, implying some huge percentage of it, seems unfounded.
@poorkwamoi
@poorkwamoi 5 жыл бұрын
@@elenchus I would agree to a lot of what you said. I will also say this, I believe all regions have their own martial arts. That's just a natural progressin. There are people claiming all martial arts come from Greece/Roman, there are people claiming Martial Arts came from India because of its influence in China. I believe all regions had their own martial arts. It is like histroy. The one that dominates wins the rights to write how history goes. So, I think and believe Jiu-Jit-Su evolved as its own. There grappling techiniques in Kung-Fu. Qin-Na is part of it. But after the Mongolian rule, because of their love of wrestling and oppressive rules over China. Going to ground was considsered Savagery by the Martial Arts Practioners of the time. So only a few open minded folks practiced the grappling arts. How do I know that? I have a Chinese book that I bought in 1981, it was published in 1971, I bought it wandering the book shops of China town looking for martial arts books. And in this book, it had illustrations of many ground techniques it called San Sao. Including Kani Kesame which it states was very devastating. It had arm bar applications and toe holds. I kept this book through the years. It had 32 holds and 6 basical locks. over 1/2 of it is on the ground. I don't think they publish this book anyomre. This book was one of those that were on sale for a quarter... Either way, thanks for your input and information. I love reading up on informations and try to seek the truth from there. "I've trained with old men up on mountains... and I've trained in patty fields.." For how long exactly? "Years" means nothing if it is "2 weeks here" and "6 months there". The problem with the "Western Take" on Martial Arts is learning "just enough" to think you know everything about everything. When actually you know about as much as the last person to watch a Jackie Chan film. There is no definitive style. The legendary Shaolin monks were highly trained physically, mentally and spiritually- but they TRAINED and TRAINED in their art. Mystical? Not at all. Dismissing a style just because of your "knowledge" and limited exposure is just stupid. Mixed Martial Arts started right as it was a blend of styles from those with proficiency in said styles- incorporated into an effective fighting form. Fast forward to today and a lot of these "Mixed Martial Artists" have never studied anything except Mixed Martial Arts...in a studio... and they believe they know everything about Martial Arts. One poster here said it best. "If you do not spar, you cannot fight". I say, "If you do not train and have proficiency in several fighting styles, you should just shut up, pay your fees for your MMA class, and continue to revel in your self perceived superiority". And catch UFC or Bellator on PPV. 👍 Oh and for those *triggered* by my statement. Yes, I am a Martial Artist (40 years). Yes, I train everyday. Yes, I've taught both millitary and self defense courses. Yes, I have had more fights than some folks here have been on this earth (sadly enough). We used to have Navy seals and some marines learn from my main instructor ( RIP) who studied many arts like Kali/eskrima, wing chun, thai boxing, kajukenbo and others. We were basically using JKD concepts which the Navy seals use called PFS by Paul Vunak and Frank Cucci ( decorated seal in the 80's) The Army's 10th SOF group at Ft Carson also incorporates PFS ( as you already know) and adds chinese arts like San Soo and not just do BJJ and western boxing like this ignorant idiot RAMSEY DEWEY whom I doubt ever fought outside the ring (or his gym)or a controlled sporting event. But these arts were already MMA in the 1960's before the UFC 1993. We have been doing mixed martial arts since the 1960's. Funny how the sport fighters rely on thinking they always fight unarmed. I have been in jail and in the streets and prisoners and thugs don't give a crap about some martial artist MMA or whatever. Many as you know will use some sort of weapon. That is the first thing on my mind when I got into fights. I got gouged in the eyes trying to do jiu iitsu, pummelled in the back with prison pillow cover filled with unopened coke and pepsi cans. People used bats and tire irons on me. These things I went thru were common in street and prison fights. Sure. I’m working on one about the spear to the throat trick right now. Bear in mind “magic tricks” require a high level of training. Some bum off the street would hurt himself trying the spear stunt, the same way an untrained man couldn’t do a French drop coin trick.

People pretend Bruce Lee got them in to Martial Arts but ignore what he said back in the 1960's, he witnessed one these magic tricks and he tapped the 'Monk' on the shoulder and Professor Inosanto was there in San Francisco and he said are you telling me if I take this spear and drive it in your throat you will survive and not be beheaded??? That as much as his teaching the nne Chinese when he himself was Part Dutch-German. I mean come on people, it was him exposing the classic mess of Martial Arts that got him hated by his own countrymen, not the fact he was teaching none Chinese, it is all magic. Only a few were guarded in the old days Wong was one, but most had not been since the 1940's. Stop people believing in Kung Fu Foolery and that is great, show the true essence is the best thing and the truth is, it is not hard just takes lots of conditioning. So it still surprises me that people 50 years later still believe in these illusions and tricks.

I hope this video reaches the executives at youtube so they quit spamming me with these shaolin monks. I knew right away these videos were full of lies because if they were so good they would be winning fights against ufc fighters. I searched "why no shaolin in ufc" and your video came up. Thank you for making it and validating my critical thinking.

Some more useful than others. But say Jon Jones grew up a shaolin monk. You think the style would be ineffective? Cuz I dont

In an article, I have recently wrote, I mentioned that a Shaolin warrior monk that is skilled could take on an MMA fighter in the ring and take the punches due to their conditioning as a warrior monk. Never did I mention they could win as they do not learn kickboxing or boxing form, power, and structure. They may last a bit with their powerful legs, but not every round with wins. Shaolin monks are tougher than you'd think...

Technically, the shaolin kungfu story begin during the 5th or 6th century. Before that, shaolin monks were a bunch of lazy monks doing nothing but praying, eating and sleeping. Until Bodhidharma whom is a physical trainer from India came to Shaolin and see the problem of Shaolin monk with weak physical. Then Bodhidharma reconstruct the temple and include harsh physical training as part of their daily schedule... Shaolin magical powers story comes from a series of novels written by JinYong. And for most of the people from China or most chinese oversea that can read/write Chinese, they are influenced deeply by his novels.

MMA has no design for using weapons unless MMA adds martial arts like nova scrims, Huma and all that swordsmanship if they do they most likely beat the shaolins considering the Templars and there swordsmanship was one of the best MMA means mixed martial arts meaning they took other martial arts and made it into one so if that ever happens they'll add other swordsmanship martial arts from Europe or even Kendo

@@BLstudios - That'll be to much a discipline to put in a one to one sport. Might as well bring back Gladiatorial competition instead of putting it in MMA. As we know in the history of warfare a well trained armed fighter can easily kill any trained un-armed combatant. That's the reality in warfare. Adding weapons to MMA would make all bare arm martial artists insignificant. Even the toughest wrestler would lose from a guy with a knife. And if you think it's easy to disarm a guy with a knife with that Magical martials arts you see in youtube and not get fatally cut or stabbed, well I guess you have'nt seen stabbing or actual knife fighting in real life then. One thing I'll tell you it's really ugly.
