Chopin, Water buffaloes, and Polar Foxes! A Farm Tour with Mrs. Solange

In the second part of Jonathan's visit to the Happy Animals Farm, philanthropist Solange Olszewska takes us on an extensive tour of the farm, passionately discussing a number of interesting topics, including: her relationship with Chopin, cheese production, new and old orchards, vegetable gardens, farming methods cows on the farm, the importance of sex for animal happiness, educational programs for children, an on-farm shop, ongoing construction projects, and the many animals she has saved from slaughter, including buffalos, sheep, horses and arctic foxes.

Solange Olszewska initially wanted to be a veterinarian. However, she became a pediatric dentist, and during martial law in Poland in the 1980s and 1990s, she lived in Berlin with her husband Krzysztof, who after returning to Poland founded the Solaris company, introducing the first ecological and low-floor buses in Poland, creating 2.5 thousand seats work and significantly improving the quality of transport for all. In 2012, Krzysztof became seriously ill, and Solange took control of the company, eventually selling it to a Spanish concern. Now he puts his heart into building a model ecological farm. The Happy Animals Farm is currently a 36-hectare farm, located on the site of a former communist military unit, where soldiers jammed Radio Free Europe signals coming from the West. The site was originally intended to be a bus factory, but when Mr. Olszewski fell ill, Solange began producing healthy food for him, and the site quickly became a farm, which is now set to expand by another 100 hectares after Solange took over a dilapidated nearby conventional dairy farm. The farm has many cows, chickens, ducks, geese, horses, sheep, alpacas and other animals rescued from the slaughterhouse. Solange wants to create a haven for animals that have had difficult lives elsewhere, while producing healthy, organic food from locally raised animals. However, no young animals on site are ever killed because Solange believes it is important to give each animal a chance to breed and raise its offspring. The farm also has an old orchard, a new orchard with old fruit varieties and a large vegetable garden. The farm also has its own shop where visitors can directly purchase food produced on site. Deeply concerned about the future of the natural world, Solange's mission is to educate young people about the importance of treating animals with respect, not wasting food, and showing that organic farming with animals can be carried out on a large scale, improving life in the local community and creating an oasis for birds and insects in a region heavily polluted by chemicals and artificial fertilizers. There is also an agritourism hotel where guests can relax and spend time among animals, eating food produced on site.
