@@sixtyfiveford Plastic moulds are cheaper than casting moulds. Thanks for the tip with the keepers, I also keep a tiny little ball peen hammer just for gaskets, absolutely tiny one, with both front face and ball smooth and unblemished, to get the best cut possible on the gaskets. The small ball you also just press it down on the bolt holes, twist it once or twice, and it cuts the hole out neatly. Yes the new piston and pot complete is not cheap, but Yamaha often only has only a standard size piston on a lot of them, no oversizes on anything.

I had the same thing happen to my 02 Grizzly 660 a couple years back. I didn't check my oil often and it went dry....making that same knocking sound. I had to have the top end replaced (that took most of the summer) so I purchased another wheeler to play on until it was fixed. They charged me over $2000...😳. So now I check my oil EVERY time I want to start it. Great job, Moe👍🏻 I wish you lived in Maine so I had someone dependable for repairs.

Dang. Crazy that valve shim was the holdup. Hotcams and Wiseco both offer shim kits in various diameters. Often your local power sports shops will keep a kit in stock and you can purchase individually. Although it may be worth it to purchase a kit for future repairs to avoid the downtime. Love the gasket making tip.

we have the same Wolverine....... was wondering why you didn't pull the engine out and go through it more? i worked as a Master automotive technician for the last 30 years, and have found that leaving metal in the engine always comes back to haunt you. intersting trick with the plastic sheet over the top of the valve spring to re-install- i have a 1/2" thick by 1.5" diameter puck of aluminum to put under the valves to keep them up when re-installing.

A number of reasons why. It didn't have catastrophic failure so there was no large metal debris in the engine case. The actual wear off of the piston was very minimal. The drained oil had no metal particles large enough to harm anything. The filter had caught everything that was pushed through and any damage that was going to happen would have already happened. And probably finally; 3-4x the labor cost for the customer.. and that's not cheap. Now it threw a rod and sent chunks of aluminum through the entire case absolutely tear the whole thing apart.

Good idea to put some of the bolts in their holes, and to mark the holes. They should've had a low oil light or cut off switch, but the owner should check it every time. Did you use follow me on the drone or do it manually?

Great video as always. Did you check to make sure the oil squirter wasn’t plugged by any metal debris? I’ve seen this happen on bigger industrial engines. It becomes an expensive missed step later on.

Very true. I did a visual inspection but didn't do a manual run the pump test. I wasn't too concerned with the lack of large particles in the sump and that it was run out of oil. If it had a decent amount of oil and this happened I would have for sure gone further. The later requiring full engine/trans removal.

I think their engineering all new stuff to train people not to. This one you have to remove the seat, then remove a rubber grommet that is not easily reinstalled. Kind of a pain. Run out of oil: from a manufactures perspective it's probably the best way to sell new machines as the blame is 100% on the operator and not the manufacturer. My wife has made fun of me for checking the oil on rental cars while on vacation...

Very true. This guy is pretty good though and only calls me for the serious stuff. I think him doing maintenance is what saved the bottom end of this engine. The oil consumption is a known problem for this particular year/engine, so really just bad luck.

You can replace valve seals without removing the cylinder head with the rope trick. With the engine on the compression stroke and spark plug removed, simply lied as much rope as you can fit into the cylinder. Then rotate the engine so the piston is pushing the rope up against the valves to hold it in place. Then you're free to work on the valves with the springs removed.

I always tell them you can with some locking extensions and swivels plus some extra respect for the plastic parts. Just always check the oil. They're known for oil consumption. The water pump drive also is a common issue. Some people never have an issue but a good handful do.

I had seen your gasket tip previously, but the valve keeper install was a new one- I recently rebuilt a 660, that the timing chain came off of; the cardboard tip is handy with all of the different length bolts. I changed over to studs for the head. I haven't (but will) check the description; but where do you get the artistic colored pens? Thanks!

I actually had the same happen to my Yamaha 660(rhino). It was smoking pretty bad so I rebuilt the motor for a kid with a tight budget. He didn't want to pay to replace the cam chain/extra labor involved. It ran for year/half hard and slipped a tooth. I bought it off of him and luckily it only bent 1 valve. Did the work and it's been going strong for me the past year. I have used a few different paint pens over the years and the last set has been the best. These are the exact pens I buy amzn.to/3ULxIJH . So many colors makes it nice as I will put random color marks all over an engine bay(you can see a few in the video) for different hoses, connectors. I have used the "mechanic pens" and these work just as well for far less.

I didn't see any mention of water pump failures on the 708cc. You can blame Subaru for poor engine build quality from 2016-18. That's right after the tsunami destroyed Yamaha's Japanese engine factory and they were rebuilding. In the mean time they had Subaru manufacture their engines and they made a lot of cost cutting changes.

Everything has been great. I did not pull the cover as it is a little more involved than that. If I recall you have to pull the engine to do so and or cut the frame/reweld it. That gear also runs the water pump so instead I use my infrared camera to make sure the coolant was flowing.

Something I've recently experienced once again from Inheriting Sins of the Previous Owner, buying something you know needs to be rebuilt based on knowledge of Last Ran Low on Oil isn't always a golden goose situation. I'm currently rigging a lift to pull out a burnt up Kohler K321 out of '77 JD 214 that I thought was an easy rebuild situation, which turned out it was cheaper to repower than to buy all the special tools you'd need to repair the vast amount of damage I found inside. 🤦‍♂ At least in your case it wasn't a 'Hello Rodney!' situation.

@@bobbrown2039 Poor manufacturing. Yamaha did have newer piston rings that are supposed to eliminate the oil burning. The only other major issue is the sprocket that runs the oil pump/ water pump can come loose and you have no oil pressure/ water cooling. If those two issues are remedied during the rebuild it should be no reason it's not a reliable machine.

These are probably pushing 40hp with the high compression and rpm they spin at. These pistons pins have a clip on each side. I put one in pre and carefully/painstakingly snapped in the second without dropping it inside the engine case.
