Y'all feel good about getting Blonde Cow, don't ya!?! I think every sub is glad ya did. Just watched the winter WX potential. Looks like definitely Arctic Air coming down. Moisture could be hit n miss with El Niño in neutral, and a warm area of Pacific ocean to the NW. So y'all planned well to keep a hay buffer in place. Well, I've turned in another Word Fit. Y'all stay warm, stay safe and have a wonderful Thanxgiving!

Hey Mike. Another great video!! So sorry I haven’t been around much - raising 3 little boys at 68 is harder than it was back when I was 38...!!! I remember my Uncle had a note book and that kept all his information on his cows. My mothers cousin had files on sheets of paper for his cows and when his son took over he put in a notebook and when he got done with his cows and sold them all he told us that he threw them away. Thank you for the video

Mike, great video showing the business side of ranching! Even though I am young I still keep some of my records on paper and some online! I keep track of AI dates and pasture exposure dates in a notebook. I keep my semen tank inventory on an Excel spreadsheet, and my inventory on both paper and online. Since I have a registered herd I keep records via the American Simmental Association and American Angus Association websites. Happy Thanksgiving!

I created my own record keeping program using Microsoft Access. I can generate all kinds of production reports on any of our animals. Although the number of animal is quite small compared to you. I think your program is more detailed on the cost of each animal, pasture usage, etc. I like the fact that you can take your tablet or Ipad with you into the field. Your right record keeping is extremely important. Great video.

Finally…. A Rancher/Farmer that illustrates how to figure expenses/profit. Many years I have been doing this and my spread sheet equals 2 + 2 = 3. The last two years I have been negotiating with a corporation to rent my operation from me for revenue I haven’t seen in ten years. How can they make a profit and I can’t…maybe their accountant can’t read a spread sheet or my 2600 acres will fit in their 15000 acres more proficiently. If it works out, next year at this time I will be setting in a warm coffee shop early morning sipping coffee talking about the old (bad) days. Who will be listening to me (?) probably no one; but I’ll be setting in a warm coffee shop not worried about how to pay my debts….

Very informative, thanks Mike. I was puzzled when Erin said cut their tags if they're empty. I thought when sending a cow to auction or sold to another ranch, including her records should make her worth more? When you buy bred cows... or any new cow to the ranch, do they come with records? -EZ

Good questions. When we buy cows we get pretty good records. At least birthdays and shot records. When we sell they really don’t want birthday however we do let them know of their health history. Thanks -Mike

Be careful what you wish for. In the Uk the government/eu produces tags and every bovine has its own passport. Every birth has to be reported to the government in 21 days. They are traceable from birth to death online. If a cow loses a tag it has to be replaced within two weeks. Periodically cow tags are inspected. You can be fined if they have one missing. If they have both missing they can slaughter the cow on farm and have it taken away for incineration. Maximum penalty for tampering with tags is 2 years. You also get a couple of records inspections every year where they try to catch you out. 1980s you just had a notebook and tagging was optional. Partly this is a means to stop imports from outside the eu where cattle are not traceable
