It's not just a liability, it's an actual fire hazard. If even part of the land underneath the gas lines shifts it could potentially blow up the whole neighborhood. If a power-pole falls and snaps a live power line the whole community could go up in smoke. The only way in and out is winding canyon roads. It's not just about you, it's about the community as a whole. If they can't safely get power to you, past the damaged property, then your power is gone too.

Any property that burns due to live electrical or gas lines will cost the utility companies a fortune...far more than just the replacement cost of the house. Ambulance-chasing attorneys will be in court to describe the supposed stress the homeowners have felt, and ask for compensation for that, too. I totally understand what the utility companies are doing. It is almost like some people think that the utility companies are punishing the homeowners with a revengeful act. You can bet the utility companies would prefer these people to be online and paying for utilities.

Text is misleading: they are definitely NOT completely off grid. If they are disposing of wastewater into the soil, that water goes somewhere...like right downhill to where the city is spending millions of dollars to pump groundwater out. To my knowledge, the prevalence of septic leach fields was a key factor in initiating or contributing substantially to the landslides that are now happening. The same thing that happened in RPV happened in the Malibu hills: they didn't want to pay for sewer (really expensive), then after a long enough time of everyone disposing wastewater into the soil, landslides happened. I don't recall the whole detailed development and litigation history, but in hilly coastal California, ground disposal of wastewater is a real problem.

Floating foundation. Smart. The only way they should have let them build out there. Some homes may be able to be retro-fitted this way. Fixed foundations are no bueno in Palos Verdes. It's a little like a tiny home on wheels. The integrity of the house frame isn't earth dependent, but metal girder separate from the earth. Now they just need a whole mess of solar and batteries. Clothesline! That's the big cheap easy fix that saves a bunch of power by skipping the clothes dryer. You don't need a propane fridge. That's old school, nowadays you just add a few more panels.
@ericfielding25402 ай бұрын
I don’t know where this house is located. If it is near the middle of the moving block of the landslide, then the steel beams may be sufficient. The landslide edges have extreme surface deformation that has torn apart houses and roads or caused huge tilting. The frame would not work in one of those areas. I agree that buying new appliances that run on propane is old-fashioned technology. Installing a large solar panel and battery storage system would be more sustainable. The propane requires ongoing deliveries to their home often and those effect on the roads could make it difficult to reach their home with trucks.
