Tick Infested Mudslide about sums it up! BTW, thanks for taking the time to pass on some encouragement and words of wisdom to the new hikers. It really is a cool thing to do since we all were new hikers at some point and inspiring a new generation of hikers is a GOOD thing! Also, congrats. on 5 years of doing what you want (within reason): diving, hiking, climbing, canoeing, etc. Life well lived and we are all happy to live it with you, vicariously! Hike on! Tortoise

Lake Harsha. Only about 50 years old. Couple roads that ended up under the lake still have quite a bit of asphalt left when using them to access the trail. There is a 5 and 10 mile race on that trail I have run a couple times.

With all that mud on the trail you would think you were in Vermont on the AT. Be careful and hopefully Indiana will provide some drier terrain.

I finally did do a DG resupply and realized I was probably being a little harsh on them. They do have a lot of well sized snacks and a lot of the things like crystal light I’m usually looking for.

Great one ! Glad you have the mudslides behind . On to Indiana . Made some calculations : if you can do the same mileage since the start , you will be in Colorado begin september and done end november. So : keep it on .

Maybe. I have rough numbers for each state doing 20 a day or 25 a day. I started making more consistent progress for the moment but there is a lot that can happen in that long a period

Consider purchasing poles designed specifically for ski touring instead of just trekking poles. I got so annoyed bending and breaking so many poles, switched to touring (adjustable) ski touring poles and haven't bent or broken a pair. Leki makes some nice backcountry skiing poles. Pretty much same thing, just built more durable... For reference, I tried using a pair of normal trekking poles for skiing and broke one pole the very first turn.

It’s a trade off between strength and weight. I’ve seen students trying to use the UL Gossamer style poles and breaking them quite easily. I’ve been mostly happy with the Black Diamonds on that but if my 200 pound rear end goes down while they’re jammed in rocks there isn’t much that is going to survive that

Welcome to Ohio. You won't mind our ticks, spider webs, and mud, will you? In Ohio, we have two seasons, those that have rain in them and those that do not.

I agree that Expeditionary Force and Undying Mercenaries do get a little long in the tooth when the authors try to beat more stories out of the original premise. BV Larson has another good series that he stopped after 12 books - Star Force, which I also found enjoyable. You could always revisit the classics. Honor Harrington series by David Weber or the Lt. Leary series by David Drake. Both are Horatio Hornblower type themes of a young ship commander climbing through the ranks on smarts and guile. Or you could go OG with Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian in the doing Horatio Hornblower in the Napoleonic Wars

I read the first few Honor Harrington books back in the days when Torr released all their books as free ebooks. I remember liking them ok but they didn’t make enough of an impression to want to go back again. I just really wish Undying Mercenaries treated the concept a little more seriously like the first book vs McGill just going wild all the time. I’m on book 7 and I end up rolling my eyes quite a bit.

@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes It won’t get much better. There is an overarching plot line, but I’ve finished the most recent book (#21?), and looking back, it is a very formulaic series. McGill hangs around his farm, gets into some shady trouble, gets out if said trouble by lying or killing someone. Then he gets called out to another campaign where he tries to find a new girl to bang. Goes into battle against the baddie of the week, overcomes but does it in a way where he’s never lauded so he doesn’t get promoted and remains our favorite grunt. Like I said, there is an overarcing storyline where we learn what happened when first contact happened and what occurred during the unification war and how the current earth political structure is set up. And are the losers of that war still alive and what they are doing against the hegemony, but those are brief snippets in each book. It’s sort of turning into my wife’s beach house romance novels.

@@JohnPamperin I kind of figured. But I will say they are very listenable while hiking. They are easy to follow since there’s not 80 bazillion characters. And they have still been entertaining so I’m gonna keep going until it starts to drag too much.

Bad news is that strep throat is a communicable disease and serious if not treated. Can and will turn on to rheumatic fever down the line. Good news ( for you, anyway) is that a lot of people call any sore throat strep throat. So that chance that you were actually exposed to strep is negligible.

Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. Im not sure if you'll like it and the series isn't finished yet but it turned what was supposed to be a 5 mile easy walk into a 12 mile hike lol maybe it'll pick up those slow afternoons
