UPDATE: DO NOT CUT THE EXTRA POND LINER!!! Instead, let the extra liner drape over the sides at a slight downward slope to let any rain water run away from the pond. You can then cover the extra liner with rocks or dirt to hid it!
@karenweiss5145 Жыл бұрын
Can you let me know what the cloth liner is? Where did you get it?
@RandomAdventures Жыл бұрын
Really any type of cloth to protect the liner from rocks and roots like old towels, bed sheets, etc. My local pond shop gave me some free cloth that they would’ve typically just thrown away.

I would have added a little water first to allow the liner to be where it wants to be and straighten out wrinkles before adding rocks to the edge. That would eliminate stretching of the liner. I then would have put the first layers of rocks, rolled the liner up and back towards the pond, and then the second layer of rocks to eliminate runoff water from getting into the pond. A bit of a dirt berm would keep water from getting under the liner. Not trying to be an armchair coach, just how I've seen others do it and it works.

Fantastic Presentation!! And terrific work with the Family involved!! Amphibian activist here, with a backyard (rustic) goldfish pond and also, a frog pond in shallow woods. And YES! - with plenty of video action to enjoy! Both are (self built) water features attracting a wealth of nature's magic every season! The frog pond is also an annual haven for the breeding and rearing of both the Wood Frog and Spotted Salamander! Without any reservation, as we know, ponds are a fabulous way to interact with the magic of the great outdoors!!

I am considering putting a pond in the backyard. I like how you sue yours. Yours is the first video I have seen in this subject. Your build has given me some ideas. Don't just put the liner straight down on the dirt. Put an underlayment so any potential rocks/roots etc. don't suddenly come up from the dirt and poke a hole in your liner. That's what happened to a neighbor of mine and his huge 5,000 gallon + pond drained away. On the pond I'm building, I'm putting down black plastic, then old carpet, black plastic again and then the liner. I'm really paranoid about the *very expensive* liner (17 feet by 40 feet) being ripped by rocks/roots, etc.
@iiFreeman3 жыл бұрын
You can use cinder blocks or black pvc stacked together to provide cover for them. A net would also be good to keep larger debri from falling into the pond. Good old rocks inside the pond and more plants may also help. Water lettuce is great

love the build, but i dont recommend "pouring" the fish next time you get some. lower the open bag into the water in the same way as when you were acclimating them, let the opening go under the water and gently urge the fish to swim out on their own. it greatly lowers the stress level of going into different water in a new enclosure. also adding a couple handfuls of aquarium salt to the pond will help with stress, since it helps the fish work on their natural slime coating. (yes, salt in a fresh-water is a healthy thing)

The trick to natural pond is over digging and stacking rocks and driftwood from bottom up and out to the sides, in order to do this the pond liner has to be much bigger than your ponds hole, it's deceiving! Always remember to go as big as possible like literally the biggest liner you are capable of carrying or transporting in the end you end up with such a more natural looking pond

That a good tip! Thanks

You need to add some things like a plastic ship for them to play in and some plants for them to eat on cause they dont always feed on fish food that you buy in the store and plus it makes for a better environment for the fish. You could always install a water proof camera so you can watch them in their new environment after you put that stuff in you know and then post it on KZbin for everyone to see and to some people watching fish is very relaxing thats why people pay so much for huge tanks in there homes. I just wish I would've got a chance to finish the one i started to work on. It was going to be 7ft., across by 3ft., deep at the deepest end up to 6in., and about 12 to 15ft., long with a bridge going across the middle but i never got a chance to cause i got sick and everything happened from there and one of these days i will build another one bigger and better God willing. I like how you used the bigger rocks to make it look really good.

Nice little pond, people usually don't know that won't keep your fishes long but shot period of time due to expose to all kinds of predators, weather depends on where you lives and also among of maintenance you need due to your surroundings with trees and open area. All leaves will falls into it and your filter will never be able to keep up with that. Minimum you need a cover to prevents leaves and other predators.
