Dirt 2 was one of the first games to support DX11 with AMD's new Radeon 5000 series graphics cards. After 11 years you'd be forgiven for thinking it never existed. What did Dirt 2 actually do for PC games and what happened to it?
Thanks for watching :)

I'd argue that you shouldn't have qualms relying on piracy to get a hold of games unavailable for purchase anymore. Buying it off of eBay makes no technical difference to Codemasters, as they'll never see a penny you spent on the game anyway. This is about game preservation, and as long as publishers will suck at this, piracy will be necessary and needed.

CM for the past few games they pulled from sale gave the game away free for a week beforehand. Dirt 2 and Dirt 3 look- and play incredible, even on a potato. Dirt3 can basically run at 720p30fps on an Intel Atom processor. So really, for all budget gamers out there; If you can get yourself a cracked copy from a torrent site, do it! I personally don't condemn pirates from preserving our video game history. And if there's no legal way to buy them from the publisher. Well, that's a loss on them and not the fault of the consumer. I have Outrun2006, Dirt2 and Dirt3 in my Steam archive. I asked for PC parts for xmas that year and built a SUPER budget rig and kissed the N64 goodbye. I think it was an MSI KT-133 motherboard, 128MB RAM, Amd Athlon Xp 2500+ Barton and a Voodoo3! LES GO! It seems at that era games reached "good enough" state graphically where even nowadays you would be totally fine playing through them and not massively notice the difference in gaming experience as in playing PS1 or PS2 games where added detail would be clearly more immersive. Kinda unique time for video games we have now.
@michaelmonstar4276
@michaelmonstar4276 2 жыл бұрын
Kinda depends what games, though. - Racing-games have always been able to be ahead of the curve (pun intended) because they needed to render less in the world. Basically just an environment that is only seen directly from the track (and occasionally off-track), besides the fact that you speed by things anyway so you wouldn't have time to really look at things in detail, especially since you need to keep your eyes on the road and competition. - Obviously games would expand beyond the kind of "cardboard scenes" you'd see in the '90s and early 2000s, with more and more open environments and landscapes, plus more animated crowds and other elements. But it still needs way less than your RPGs and the like. That's why they could increase the quality on things, as not a whole lot needs to be rendered at the same time. It's a controlled environment, it's kind of predictable (not a random open world or sandbox), so they could optimize it for that. - And clearly Codemasters went all-out generation after generation, improving their EGO Engine and whatnot, so we ended up getting these games that last since pretty much DiRT 2 (the one title before, Racedrive GRID, is still OK but clearly lacks the fidelity). And I also feel there is this cut-off around the year 2008 where games are between "slightly too old" (for today anyway) or "just hold up". Take 'Crysis', for example, which was mindblowing at the time, but didn't hold up enough with CryEngine 2, so it got a remaster to polish things up more recently. It was just slightly expired being developed in like 2006/2007. Most higher-quality games after that point indeed tend to hold up. - It's also that overlap in console-generations, where a few years later it moved from 7th to 8th gen. and even the best-looking PS3 and X360 games (such as Crysis and DiRT 2) still hold up, though some got remasters like say the Uncharted trilogy, which were just too much to ask from something like a PS3. - But it's cool that we've gotten to this point. :) We're so spoiled! XD

Seems so. I had a few PC games from this era but I didn't have the hardware then. Modern Warfare 2, World at War, DiRT 2, NFS Shift and maybe some other. I reinstalled some of them when I got a hardware that's relatively overkill for games of the time and I gotta say, graphically, they mostly aged well. Mostly. I'm glad we have walked away from low-saturation brown filters and obnoxious lens flares nowadays.

Graphics have stagnated hard as fuck, RTX lighting isn't even all that impressive for how much it nukes your FPS, comparing it to games with masterfully crafted volumetric lighting with good ambient occlusion like the beautiful lighting in RE2/RE3make it's hard to see why certain things are even having time wasted on them whilst meanwhile gameplay mechanics suffer.

I remember being completely blown away by the graphics. Still holds up honestly. I think I grabbed a demo for the game on PC back when I bought my first gaming laptop, an ROG G73.

I remember playing a demo of this game on PS3 and in the demo you got to use the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which sounded amazing. The way revs climbed as you applied throttle sounded amazing, raw and realistic ( much better than Gran Turismo, which had disappointing sound ). I bought Dirt 2 and found the engine sounds in the released version were of worse quality. Perhaps the algorithm generating engine sound was too heavy on resources and had to be axed, I don’t know. Amazing game overall. Became a lifelong fan since then

Showdown, 4 and 5 were also not that good. Truth be told, Showdown might be the best out of those. 2+3 were where it's at and when DiRT3 was free on steam a few years ago, I used the chance to replay it to full including online and it was just as great as the first time 'round in 2011-2013.

Hey man, awesome video! I still love this game. I’m curious to know what hardware you had this running on and what, if anything, you had to do to get the game running. I have been trying for over a year now to get this running on my R5 3600/Vega 56 system with zero luck. I’ve swapped out my GPU with literally every other card I have, no luck. I’ve even tried to get it running on an older FX 6300 and i5 4460 systems, again, with no luck. For reasons that I don’t understand, I’ve only ever gotten it to boot on my son’s thrown together R5 1500x/RX 570 system. Runs flawlessly on it, but will not load past the intro screens on anything else.

I would love to see an analysis like this for GTA V, because I've never understood why you can change the API to dx10 or dx10.1 or dx11 in the graphics settings, and how it impacts graphical fidelity and performance. Most people say it's negligible but I bet there's a little more to it than that

Absolutely amazing game, and I was so lucky to actually have a disk back then, and I guess the key was Steam-compatible, since I never bought it on Steam before the delisting, and now it's gone for good pulled off from the store altogether. Oh well... I remember I was blown away by the quality of the water there. It really looks gorgeous still to this day, and I miss it so much in modern DiRT games. I speak not just about your ordinary small puddles and stuff, but real bodies of water on track ranging in size from medium to 'huge'. If only those splendid dust clouds would also cast and receive dynamic shadows then it would be truly a God-tier stunning tech, for sure. Tech goodies aside, it was a blast of a game, combining excellent gameplay, sick soundtrack, and also quite engaging progression. The main menu navigation still gets me, it was so much more than just a UI with buttons and submenus sprinkled around, it was a living breathing part of the game's world seamlessly integrated into the narrative, and damn it was so cozy inside!

The dirt series is great. There has been 14 games in the series. Started way back in 1998 when it first launchged as Colin McRae Rally on Playstation and Windows. Before adding the dirt name in 2007 and dropping Colin McRae in 2011. Games with licensed music alway get delisted and no longer available for purchase when licences expire. Although if you already own the game before it was removed, you can still play it. DiRT 3 Complete Edition was given away for free in November 2016 just before it got delisted. So still able to install and pkay that.

I've been thinking about this game recently, it was so fun and colorful, I loved playing it. I've been a budget gamer and I remember I started playing it with a Nvidia GeForce GT 8500 with 1GB DDR2 of VRAM, though the actual GPU was kinda slow, I played this game in low resolution and low graphics with that graphics card, not mentioning it took over 1 minute to load the tracks. Then I upgraded to an Nvidia GT 545 with 1.5 DDR3 GB VRAM and a faster GPU, by that time I started playing at 720p and the loading time totally improved, it only took around 20 seconds to load the tracks. I have nothing but good memories playing Dirt 2.

Probably the most advanced early DX11 game was Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, a very strange FPS out of Russia. Rather than being a DX9 game with a few added effects it was built for the API from the ground up. If I remember correctly it came out some months before Dirt 2. It's worth having a look at, also worth playing if you're into really weird obscure horror games.
