The old Core i7-860 is a "95W" TDP cpu. As we know, Intel's TDP is more like an average than the real thermal dissipation of the package, so we're looking at an over-100W CPU. The stock intel cooler for these CPUs were taller and very dense, so swapping it for a newer, lower-profile one is a recipe for a disaster. I had a Core i7-950 (130W TDP! :O ) and the stock Intel cooler is very good... as a paper weight! Switched to a 120mm watercooler (TT Water 3.0) with push-pull fans to keep it from starting with the thermal-throttle shenanigan's before any game finished loading. Ended up swapping it for a Xeon X5650 (95W TDP) that barely broke 65C while being test-stressed with the watercooler.

I was using an i7 860 running at around 60-70 degrees idle and 99 degrees in gaming. I changed thermal paste which had literally no effect at all. I then decided to underclock it and see what happens, at 75% power it was still running at 99 degrees when gaming. So I just continued using it like that for 2-3 years and just recently my motherboards gpu insertion hole died (No idea what they are called). Needed another motherboard. My cpu was still working fine and it could run Doom Eternal at 50+ fps and that was pretty much the only recently released game I was playing but after some thought i decided I'd replace the cpu as well while I'm at it. Bought a Ryzen 5 3600, the thing's very very good my (heavily) modded minecraft load time decreased like 10 minutes. Oh right I don't know where I was going with this probably wanted to say that "Hey, i7 860 is still kinda ok for some* gaming even after like 11 years" thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

And here I just told my friends that a Radeon RX 5500Xt is the best budget card to get, even the 4 GB version, despite running on PCIe 3.0. There had been some rumbles regarding VRAM and PCIe concerns, so I did a bit of research on their behalf. And generally, it's a card, that on a good day, trades blows with RX 580 and on a bad day, RX 570. While still being more power-efficient.
@janwitkowsky87874 жыл бұрын
I've also just gone from one B450 mobo to another. Asrock B456m HDV R4.0 to Gigabyte B450m Gaming. I no longer have random system-wide crashes, which I believe were due to some power-delivery issues, or VRM temps, which could go a bit high. Though I do have the occasional software crash, such as Java or certain games. But I haven't reinstalled Windows, nor fixed the drivers, so that might be the main issue, which I will look into, next time I am at my main. The Asrock will now be paired with an Athlon 200ge and an WX2100, where I will see how it fares against an i5-2400 with HD7770 combo.

@@TECHNIKVERBOT it is a step up I'd say. Just make sure you run a good PSU. A PSU ages and the capacitors in it age and they cannot filter the power as good anymore. That increased voltage ripple is what takes components like motherboards out. Just because a PSU is still making power does not mean it is still making clean power. Any PSU past 10 years old is suspect. Some don't even last that long. Tier 1 Japanese caps you get 10 years. Tier 2 Chinese or Korean caps 5 years. Past that you're really pushing your luck.

The i5-4460 isn't too bad, though of course an i7 would be even better, as for the RAM sticks the old system would have been 8GB or less, and anyway, they looked like random RAM sticks from a spares pile. My choice would have been an i7, 32GB RAM across all 4 sticks, and multiple SSDs/HDDs/ODDs. Overkill, possibly - but it is better to have too much than not enough, and anyways, you can never have too much of RAM and storage. :)

I paused this before watching. I am going to hypothesis that the problem was the PSU. I had that same line of PSU although it was an 850w. I got it at a best buy when I needed one in a pinch. It lasted about a month before I started getting crashes and random powering off. Eventually it just died. I took it back, but even though I had gotten the warranty and had the paper, apparently I needed to keep the receipt as well?! At no point was I told this, although it was in the fine print. They did give me a SLIGHT discount on another though. Hoping it was just bad luck, I went for it. Then again, a few months later, it just died after a big spike(I use an APC brand UPS with a conditioner FYI). I took it back with the proper paper work and got yet another. Yet again, it did the same thing even after changing it to a new circuit with a brand new breaker. I ordered a cheap 700w Rosewill off Newegg right away and tried to get my money back especially since it was the 3rd one in less than 8 months and had only been 2 months since I got the last one. They would not do it. In a bit of rage, I just left it there amd didn't take the replacement. I wouldn't have felt right selling it to anyone given my experience. The 700W (half the price) showed up worked fine for about 3 years until I went to crossfire and needed more power. I got the same line Rosewill 1000w(still $40 less than the 850 corsiar)and it has been used for 3 builds so far now. The 700w is going strong too and I am Actually installing it into my oddest daughter's PC right now. Anyway that is my story and I will see if I'm right upon watching this video. Cheers!

I have an i7 that’s nearly ten years old and apart from power consumption it was fine when I stopped using it last year. Not cutting-edge but adequate for lots of things.

You see older hardware running games just fine and looking great and it makes you think about just how many people have spent so much money on things they did not need when they bought them. This also can be applied to games in that people buy too many to complete I guarantee you. Where do you think the term backlog4life came from? Also in regards to Sophie it was funny when you went to her asking about the upgrade and she just basically said to do whatever you are going to do and that she knew nothing of what you were talking about. I kind of wish I would have been like that in life and heck maybe not touched gaming at all.

If the motherboard supports it, the cheapest in-socket upgrade to 4C/8T for that pc could be a Xeon E3-1240 V3 (less than 60£ including shipping on AliExpress), or for 5£ more and better price/performance an E3-1246 V3 (which is basically an i7-4770 for half the usual price). It would be interesting to see how much difference they would make compared to the i5...

I would have checked the 4pin plug was in securely and the 24v, and then check and swap out the psu before the board.

One problem I have encounter on old intel CPUs is that the thermal paste between the silicon chip and the integrated heat spreader dries off, and causes overheating.
