Welcome! Today I'll be restoring six old rusty cast iron hinges from the 1800s. These were manufactured by Reading Hardware Co. in the 1880s-1890s - I've done a number of hardware restoration videos featuring the Reading Windsor design, but with these hinges restored I finally have a complete set of matching hardware for a set of double doors. Although these rusty hinges weren't in too bad of shape they were asking for someone to restore them!
To start off today's restoration I had to disassemble the six hinges. I was able to disassemble everything aside from the bottom tips on three of the hinges - The tips on each hinge were all pressed in place and I would have almost certainly broken the hinge knuckles off trying to remove the stubborn tips. Anyway, next up with this hinge repair was paint stripping. I used a gel paint stripper on these, and after about 20 minutes the baked on gloss black enamel paint which covered the recessed areas of the hinges was peeling up and ready to be wire brushed off. Then it was time to take care of the rust. I soaked all 12 hinge halves, tips and pins on the rust removal solution for a day.
After five hours of wire wheeling the parts were al paint free and pretty clean! Although this was far from my most rusty restoration the hinges still had plenty of rust from 120 years of use. I sanded all hinge halves from 320-800 grit and decided to leave them as a light unpolished finish. I then cleaned and lacquered all the hardware with a clear tinted lacquer to imitate the original plated finish. Next up in this hinge restoration was painting the recessed areas of the ornate design. Then the hinge pins were chemically copper plated - Although this chemical copper plating isn't the strongest should help to keep them rust free which means no squeaky hinge! With the hinge repair work done it was time to get this hardware reassembled! After a quick reassembly (and 80 or so hours of work) these hinges were finally finished and ready to be installed on a door!
