Love this explanation. Though I've heard Randy play using this stuff for decades & even heard him and Michael (Brecker) discussing it between themselves & even with Sanborn, it's great to hear him really lay it out!

Great to see him communicating the message that he has found these things out for himself by listening not necessarily following a doctrine. important for all people learning to play and extending their depth of jazz to know that they are capable of doing this via their own instinct and inquisition..

"Sketch Works" by Bugs Bowers. Great tip. Bowers also published excellent chords' and scales' books too with rhythm exercises; so much fun to play. Many of his books are hard to find so do a search and if you find one, definitely buy it if you can.

Guitarist here. This was useful though. The cliche on guitar is to emphasize notes with vibratos. At the end of the video where he uses dynamics to emphasize them is very impressive, and not something I would've listened out for. Nice one.

4:06 to 4:15, that was cool. Sounded like a drum solo in there. I'd like to apply this to my guitar single-note phrasing. Thanks for the information!

Never heard of anyone moving their tongue from side to side before - it's not how I've heard doodle tounging explained before.

I don't get what he means by moving the tongue from side to side but he pronounces it doodle doodle.

No and neither is he. It's a -5 minute video for crying out loud. He's also explaining it to a crowd that's obviously novice.

There’s no way anyone is moving their tongue side to side while playing? …really? I’ve played trumpet for 40 years …I seriously can’t even imagine that 🤷♂️ I’ll give it a try though 😂
