I recorded 14 songs with Randy. He was not only an outstanding musician but an outstanding person as well. God I miss him.

Randy was awesome. I used to get lessons from him in amityville. I litterly picked a bass up and signed up for lessons. He was such a nice a patient teacher. My jaw would hit the floor when he went off. Or I’d be doing a blues line and he would play like a lead guitar on his bass. Just incredible. I was so sad when I heard he passed a year after the fact. Miss you bud.

I'd never heard of this guy until stumbling across this video. He's on another level compared to the majority of professional players yet makes it look so easy and what a great presentation. To any new players, trust me most of this is so advance to attempt early on so please don't get demoralised if you can't manage it, even those of us who've been playing for many years will struggle! He looked like great fun to be around.

One of the best bass instructional videosIi have ever seen...if not the best....this guy thumb double picked long before Wooten did.....Coven RIP
@Gthesofine10 жыл бұрын
Actually my friend, Wooten's technique happened way before his. Try 1973. However, you taught me something. I didn't know Randy passed away. I first heard his work in 92' entitled "Sammy Says Ouch"! Really took me to another level.

Thank you for posting this. I have a few Hot licks guitar VHS tapes myself. In 1968 I started a Brother Rock Group. I Told my youngest brother who was the drummer about Billy Cobham years later he started a jazz fusion group his Bass player took lessons from Randy Coven. I never met Randy but my brother Rick did play with him. My other Brother the bass player met Randy the same night they played together, I am going to show this to my brother Cook ( Bass Player ) I love the track Randy was on with his Bass Playing. It's really sad he went so young. Thanks again. c];-)

Despite his condition and the obviously dated VHS format, I'm sure Randy has much invaluable electric bass technique/theory information ingrained in this video worth coming back to. Can't wait to have to time to dig into this one!
@markdaniels71745 жыл бұрын
He knew all this complicated musical theory, cold. But he's not the greatest at teaching it in a simple way... sounds like one of his Berklee profs rattling off complicated theory as if you already understood it and are on the same page, when we're actually going "whaaa?" Lots of info here, but you'd have to take it slowly, in bite sized chunks, over time.

Can someone please explain modes? How & when to use each and the scales relevant to them.
@markdaniels71744 жыл бұрын
How I think of them... The intervals (and patterns) you play with each mode are determined by playing a scale of all the natural notes (no sharps/flats) in each mode’s relevant key. For example, Ionian mode relates to C, so if you play a scale of only the natural notes from C to C, you’ve played an Ionian scale. (You’ll notice that Ionian is also “the Major scale.”) Now if you play a scale of all the natural notes from D to D, no sharps or flats (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D), you’ve played a Dorian scale. A scale of all the natural notes from E to E, no sharps or flats, would give you Phrygian. Here they all are: Ionian.C Dorian.D Phrygian.E Lydian.F Mixolydian.G Aeolian.A Locrian.B I’m not an advanced player and I’m no great music theorist; I’ve just memorized the modes in this order (the order of their relevant keys, from C to B) by using the mnemonic “I Don’t Play Loud Music After Lunch.” Hopefully I haven’t made this MORE confusing.

Randy joined the Canadian jazz fusion band Orpheus around 1980 at the age of 20. He played on their second album 'Orpheus 2'. Highly recommended for fans of that genre, and Randy's phenomenal playing. To my knowledge the album has never been reissued on CD. You'll have to track down the original LP on the short lived Canadian 'Acapella' record label. The original version of "Funk Me Tender" can also be found there.
